Before: Intriguing match up—Dana not the best athlete Gillian has faced, but maybe the savviest challenger in a long while, Both girls have had to make up for physical shortcomings with technique, and both like to work inside to apply as much psychological pressure as physical on an opponent. Questions are: how’s Gillian going to handle the rough stuff, and how’s Dana going to handle going the distance with the younger pair of legs, Answers coning up. Anderson in pale blue cotton tank top and panties, Dana in red.

R1: Anderson using the stick, wants to box, actually refusing the invitation inside, so dana has to go out and get her Delany getting nicked by the jab coning in, but she gets to Anderson’s chest, and outworks the champ with short, biting lefts and rights to the sternum. Nice grinding round for Dana, more or less as she drew it up.

R2: Gillian still stepping around, backing off, looking to stick and move, and Dana eating her up. Delany jumping in with the right hand counter over Anderson’s educated jab, and Dana outs the hook on top to spill Anderson to the ropes. Gillian comes up groggy, and covers up as Delany squares up, palming up on the champ’s shoulders, digging one-twos to the stomach and punching Anderson into a stupor this round. Gillian with her butt on the ropes, tight guard, soaks it up, and looks a little sluggish in the early going.

R3: G sticks to her gameplan and the jab finally begins to break Dana’s timing, Anderson sticking and stepping left, has Delany following—sublety if the attack begins to show as Dana’s legs look heavy as she stomps after the redhead. Delany beginning to lunge, gets picked up sweet by Anderson’s clever hands. ;ittle hoks bouncing off Delany’s face, all shoulder, and Gillian pivots away leaving Delany a step behind.

R4: Gillian in the driver’s seat, Early pressure from Dana fading as Delany can’t cut off the ring, and Anderson continues to nibble with the jab, stepping in with the hook on the jaw, then pivoting away or clinching if Delany gets close. Delany tentative—Gillian’s not fighting the way everyone expected, and Dana doesn’t appear to have an answer. Shutout Anderson.

R5: Gillian expressionless, now pounding the jab hard off Delany’s eyes and forehead, driving the brunette onto her heels, then fading away to lure Dana back in. Delany desperate to body up, gambles and pays the house as Gillian just flicks her shoulder, clouting Dana a short hook on the chin—D spills past to land on all fours. Delany up quick, but Gillian’s not finished—Anderson jabs her way in, then rips those Billy Irwin hooks in behind Dana’s elbow, crumpling the brunette up with gurgling cries, and Gillian swarms to the bell. G just keeping contact, putting her paunches into open spaces, touching Dana from the hip to the head as Delany cowers on the ropes. Great shutout round for the champ who looks to be in total control at this point.

R6,7: Gillian just boxing smart, beating her girl to the punch, touching Dana with constant jab, and moving just enough to get Delany unsettled. Dana knows she needs to work the body, but she can’t get there with any consistency—the few times she does, Anderson is quick to grapple for a break, Anderson with complete tactical control of the bout—you can almost see the tentacles tightening around Dana’s body as the brunette slumps in her corner during the breaks.

R8: NOW Gillian moves in, giving the fans the fight they anticipated after running Delany’s legs ragged for 7 rounds. Toe to toe, head to head the girls grind it out, and Anderson is much the fresher puncher. Gillian twisting into that short left hook, digs into Delany’s side and tummy—Delany trying to answer back, but eventually falling into a catcher’s mode. Down the stretch, Gillian pressing with her shoulder suddenly leans back, Dana falls forward, and Anderson tags her clean with the clipping tight right uppercut on the teeth, putting Delany wobbly butt at the bell.

R9: Dana with a last gasp has her best round since the second. Gillian laying in, tucking her chin, keeping the right hand at her cheek, lets Delany get off, drawing the last of Dana’s reserves into the fight. Delany knows she getting tapped, but has to take advantage, pressing as Gillian fades to the ropes. Delany’s fists bounce off Anderson’s arms and gut, but Gillian doing a great job of minimizing the impact, emerges relatively unscathed despite Dana’s output. Result is Delany is exhausted in her, has nothing left to give.

R10: Gillian just coming out and bodying up, walking Dana to the ropes, smothering the brunette’s arms, and working her over with little clouting blows to the body and head. Gillian with her forehead on Dana’s, pulls back to rip the short uppercut into Delany’s chin, satisfied to see the brunette’s head loll back sleepily before resuming its position. Anderson not pressing for the knockout, just managing her opponent to the bell. Unanimous Duke Gillian Anderson as Dana Delany is clearly disappointed at the outcome.

After: Anderson winning with versatility, composure—survives Dana’s best pressure, then uses the brunette up over a brilliantly conceived stretch run. “We knew Dana wanted to slug,” Gillian explained in post fight. “And so did we, but we didn’t want to do it wheh she wanted to. I wanted to box early, frustrate her, break her spirit, then dismantle her when I saw the output drop, I hate to say it, but she never had a chance. I had her beat before the fight even started.” Delany spluttering with rage over Gillian’s comments, but they are hard to refute. DD getting bamboozled, joins the growing ranks of girls who consistently underestimate Anderson, only to leave the fight with an L for their troubles.
