Before: Fight took place on the set of “License to Kill”, as per Bond movie tradition. Lowell the bigger, stronger woman, but Soto the more experienced, more graceful and supple fighter. Carey unknown at the time—most figured Soto would have her way, all the way. Lowell in that grey silk one piece thingy (worth it to rent the show for that one scene with it), Soto in red silk camisole and panties.

During R1: Lowell with a powerful right handed attack, but robotic stance and telegraphed delivery robs her of effective offense. Soto cautious, fighting off her back foot, pre-empting Carey with the jab, then ducking in to bounce whipping right hands off Lowell’s face to win the right cross race. Lowell staggered on multiple occasions as she gamely plows forward, finishes the round groggy, shaking her head after absorbing countless flush counter shots.

R2: Carey shakes it off, and plunges back into the battle, but once again, loading up and firing right hands not enough. Some are landing, but Soto effective at rolling with the right, making it glance off the top of her head or shoulder, then turning back into those whip action right counters to the teeth. By the midway point, Lowell’s long, strong legs are trembling as she refuses to back up, and Soto able to retreat in good order and pick her opponent up with vicious potshots.

R3: Lowell starting to look glassy eyed, but she’s determined to cut off the ring and make Soto fight. Talisa luring Carey forward, pecking anmd swatting with the jab, stinging with the right hand, then bending inside to clinch. As the round goes on, Carey lands the occasional right, but Soto controlling the pace, lashing with fluid combinations, then insolently clinching Carey around the arms, holding the tired American close as Lowell appears sapped by the sheer punishment.

R4: Soto beginning to set down her hook, not so anxious to counter, as she decides to lead. Lowell pathetic as her head begins to rock from the jab, then jerk to the side as Soto unleashes that smooth hook on the jaw. Carey wobbling early, reaching to clinch, but Soto won’t have it, melting away from the bigger girl’s grasp, ducking in and under Carey’s arms and welting her long torso with meanspirited hooks. Lowell staggering around the ring, winds up in a daze on the ropes, and Talisa moves in, pounding the body and head with wide, looping  punches to beat Carey into a stupor. Lowell blubbering through smashed lips, utters verbal surrender as Soto pounds away to the hell. Fight is stopped as Talisa smirks, exiting the fight with a small mouse under her left eye while Lowell leaves a battered wreck.

After: Carey badly outclassed by Talisa, but showed the fighter’s heart that would make her a backlot attraction for years after, Although never finding the spotlight as a celebrity boxer, her thrilling series of brawls against Patricia Tallman are considered classics—unfortunately witnesses by only a few select invitees. Bond officially made Soto a prospect, but her smooth stylings and feline ring presence have yet to translate into fistic greatness. Recent strong performances could change that.
