1 October 1999 Diane Lane vs Elisabeth Shue

Before: Shue looking to regain the form of the mid-90’s when she was constantly mentioned in any pound-for-pound discussion. Lane seems a likely candidate: a typical brunette technician with sweet hands and feet, but not built to take 10 pounds of pounding from the buxom blonde ex-gymnast. Shue favored to stop Lane, and pre-fight publicity pretty much focuses on the blonde exclusively. Liz in black one piece armless gymnastics leotard, Lane in two piece red cotton jockeys.

During R1: Fight follows form chart early as Shue roars across the ring, traps Lane in her corner and proceeds to bang Lane’s torso with pounding lefts and rights. Diane beleaguered, fists at her temples, writhes on the ropes as Shue’s fists smack into her flesh and cotton top with jolting force. In the final minute, Lane gathers herself and stings Shue with several cunning counter shots from either side, catching the blonde in between her punches, Fighting continues on after the bell as Shue begins to get frustrated with Lane’s cagey counter attack.

R2: Liz marches out to pressure Diane again, and the brunette sinks to the ropes to accept the abuse. Lane giving up her body, takes tremendous punishment throughout the first two minutes, but elements of rope-a-dope are clear. Di able to keep her chin out of the bargain, letting Shue get comfortable on the inside, and in the final minute, clipping counter uppercuts begin to jolt the blonde’s head back. Liz unfazed, continues to lean forward with her head, hurling her fists into the taut tummy before her, but Lane explodes with a sizzling flurry of rising lefts and rights--finally spinning off the ropes as Liz stumbles onto them. All Lane as Shue gets shredded, punched up against the ropes and unable to cope with the blistering incoming. AND THE FIGHT IS STOPPED!! Elisabeth Shue, eyes wide and unresponsive, stares uncomprehending as Lane skips away in triumph. TKO2 Diane lane.

After: heartbreaking upset for Shue as he snakebitten blonde is stopped with 3 seconds left in the second round. Lane pouring punches into the first opening she got, simply rendered the blonde helpless long enough to force the referee’s hand, and Liz continues to drift into “former champion” territory.
