Before: Many consider Hu to be Jones’ toughest test to date, Luner not withstanding. Kelly brings a martial arts background, good size and power into this fight, and is clearly unintimidated going in. Jones in white two piece aerobics togs, white shoes and socks, white gloves, Kelly in red two piece aerobics wear, hair in Genie ponytails, white gloves, sneakers.

During R1: Brisk. Action round, both girls moving left, popping jabs, slipping same and snapping off combinations. Jones gets on top of Kelly in the final minute, scoring with some hooks to the ear late to take the round.

R2: Kelly comes on strong early, slashing with her fists, moving inside with a shoulder, and levering Jones backward, Hu with pressure to the body and head forces Jones into retreat, and beats the blonde to the punch throughout the round.

R3: Janet changes things up this round, feinting with the left, and turning over the lead right to stun Kelly early. Jones steps up with those withering lefts and rights to the flanks as Hu covers up, hurt for the first time in the bout. Kelly recovers with some timely defensive movement then settles down to trade with Jones to the bell. Sharp sounding hooks from both women as this fight seems to be always just one punch away from ending.

R4: Hu answers the call again, concentrating on landing rising hooks from both hands on Jones’ solar plexus, and midway through the round, she has the tall blonde hunched over in pain. All Kelly to the bell as she feasts on Jones’ tanned midriff, then rips uppercuts from both hands up the middle.

R5: Tied on all cards, both women come out hard, wanting to win the first half. Jones starts strong with those crushing Oscar de la Hoya hooks to the body and head, but Kelly responds, taking back the round with lateral movement setting up counterb right hands to the chin.. The crowd roars to its feet as both women stand and trade in the final minute, lambasting one another with sharp hooks and crosses, when suddenly, Jean leans into a sweet right hand to the chin, catching Kelly as she cocks her on right. Hu punches weakly over the top of Jones’ back and spins to the mat. Kelly can’t get off her back, blinking and moaning under the bright lights as Jones records another spectacular KO.

After: Brief, violent affair was nip and tuck to the end, Jones very complimentary of her

Opponent afterwards, citing Hu as being one of her toughest opponents. Power was the difference in this one as Kelly matched Janet stroke for stroke, but couldn’t land the big ones.
