The CW FIGHTS!

It was a simple enough idea, get The CW excitement, publicity, and (hopefully) good ratings by reviving predecessor WB’s Saturday night boxing show WB Fights! To topline the first CW Fights!, the network selected two of its hottest young stars: Leighton Meester of “Gossip Girl”, with a 5-3-0 record (4-0-0 in 2009) in 2 years of FCBA action versus Nina Dobrev of “The Vampire Diaries”, who had made her FCBA debut in January with a win over Lindsay Lohan.. Nina was naturally eager to get in a high-profile second fight and Leighton was anxious after a series unforeseen delays had kept her out of an FCBA ring in 2010. Add to this the simple fact that the two ladies shared a growing rivalry between the casts of the two shows.

“Leighton and the whole ‘Gossip Girl’ bunch are ‘last year’s news’. ‘The Vampire Diaries’ are the new hit show on our network. I am looking forward to proving that by kicking her ass in front of the fans and her own castmates. I can’t wait for this fight to happen!” Nina said with a cheerful smirk as the two shared a podium at a prefight presser.

Leighton scowled: “I see why they call you ‘The Bulgarian Bytch’.”

Now it was Neens turn to scowl and she snapped: “You leave Bulgaria out of this.”

“Oh, sorry, you’re the ‘Just Plain Bytch’!” Leighton sneered.

Nina gave Leighton a kick in the shin (which the podium hid from the press). Leighton maintained a frozen smile and kicked Nine in the shin. Nina’s smile froze, too.

This proved to be the mere curtain-raiser on a whole series of pre-fight events that ended in an escalating chaos of insults, slapping, and, ultimately a five-minute general brawl between the female casts of the rival shows. Not surprisingly, interest in the bout was running extremely high as fight night arrived.

Still capitalizing on the WB FIGHTS! heritage, Hilarie Burton was brought in as Special Referee. Ms. Burton said bluntly: “There will be order in the ring as long as I am in charge and both of them better realize it now.” Indeed, a sullen calm settled on the ring as Hilarie stood between the angry-eyed, hard-breathing pair giving final instructions. Leighton was wearing a pink with black lace trim lingerie-style bikini with black boots and small pink gloves. Nina was in an elegant black bikini with a shimmering strip of purple material around the waistband of her bottoms. Purple boots and small purple gloves completed her attire. Both young ladies wore their hair pulled back into tight battle braids.

“Now touch gloves unless one of you wants to look like a jerk and come out fighting,” Hilarie said briskly. The two young women before her reluctantly complied and bout shortly commenced.

During R1: Neens comes out with a confident smile on her face, while Leighton has a cold, hard look that bodes ill the younger woman. Sure enough, Meester unleashes a bit of a boxing lesson on Dobrev, racking her up with nicely done combinations as Nina tries to come in. Add to this, good movement and footwork, that keeps Leighton from Nina’s efforts to strike back. Dobrev’s defenses are constantly tested, she has an upright, somewhat robotic stance but still manages to keep most of the incoming leather blocked until late. Then Leighton gets a solid right uppercut in under Nina’s mitts to connect with her chin. Nina’s knees buckle, though she manages to stay up despite vigorous follow-up combos from Meester. A look of alarm is seen to flash across the younger fighter’s face and she quickly goes to earmuff defense to ride out Leighton’s vigorous follow-up combos to the end of the round.

R2: Leighton back with those well-done left/right combinations mostly aiming for Nina’s head. Nina keeps coming forward doggedly, trying to get in her jab and shortly into the second minute she begins to score up the middle. Getting her jab to loosen Leighton’s guard and then pounding in some good uppercuts. Leighton forced backwards into the ropes, where Nina really goes to town. She pounds away at Meester’s head and flanks, trying to keep Leighton from successfully covering up. Finally manages to land big, solid right cross to Meester jaw and LEIGHTON GOES DOWN! Leighton lands on all fours with Nina atop her still raining the leather to Meester’s defenseless back and neck. Ref Hilarie Burton quickly shoves Nina back and wags a stern finger in the young fighter’s face. Nina just grins and happily retreats to a neutral corner. Meester up at 8 and goes “cover up” defensive to finish out the round. Nina struts back to her corner as Leighton glares after her with pure hate.

R3: Leighton comes out trying to use her jab and nimbleness to regain the initiative as Nina comes forward, eager to pick up where she left off. Stick and move is a sound strategy, but Nina’s long, stiff jab keeps her on the offensive. To this she adds strafing right hands once she can get close. Meester takes a number of these right hands and SUDDENLY MEESTER GOES WOBBLY BUTT! Nina sees it, too and tries to take advantage to do more damage, but Meester goes earmuff and takes it to the bell. Neen’s strut looks even more pronounced as she heads back for her corner. So does the “Nina-Hate” radiating from the beleaguered Leighton.

R4: Leighton finally able to get her counter punching going, catching Neens as she comes in and hurts the younger girl with solid rights and lefts to the head. Nina shuddering, she’s hurt and forced to retreat. Now Leighton is the one coming forward, snapping off well-done combos, getting inside Nina’s defensive jab. Leighton maintains close pursuit as observers note that Nina doesn’t fight well backing up. She needs to come forward to make her punches effective. Solid Leighton Meester round. Now it’s Leighton strutting back to her corner as Nina trudges back to her own.

R5: In this round, observers can see the battle lines for this fight have been drawn: Leighton Meester trying to work her way inside. This way she can disrupt Nina’s stance. Nina trying to use her jab so she can lean in righty. Tactical interesting round goes Dobrev’s way as her agenda prevails, but neither girl is hurt. Two exchange hateful looks as they break after bell. Referee Hilarie steps between them with stern expression to break it up.

R6: Now Leighton begins to show she is the more versatile fighter as she opens up a new front against Nina’s body. Nina takes heavy shelling to her waist/ribs/jug as Meester nimbly uses in and out attacks to wreck havoc to Dobrev’s torso. Nina forced to give ground and a grumpy look comes to her face as the determined Leighton outworks steadily. Rounds goes to Leighton Meester in a shutout.

R7: The battle continues. Leighton’s quicker getting off, better in combination, more versatile. Nina can hit harder, but she needs to push off her back (right) foot to get extension on her shots. Meester counters with the growing ability to penetrate, launch a flurry of punches, and disorganize Nina. Nina starting to miss on punches and look increasingly frustrated as the best she can manage is to try to retreat out of range, though Meester stays close.

R8: As Nina absorbs more and more punishment, her defense seems to grow more and more robotic, standing basically upright with not much movement. This, of course, allows Leighton to nibble and vex her increasingly outclassed opponent. Things not looking good for Nina as rounds in. Leighton smiles, but its grim one and her eyes follow Nina with a promise of bad things to come.

R9: Nina maintains her discipline and it shows in this round. She starts landing her jab to good effect on Leighton and starts walking her down. Meester plainly spooked by those rangy right hands and resists the impulse to fall in and brawl. Instead, Leighton scampers to safety and avoids too much damage. Nina looking relieved, though frustrated at Leighton’s nimbleness. Leighton herself is more poker faced at the end of this round.

R10: Nina is running out of time and so immediately goes on the attack in this final stanza. She again able to use her jab buy distance to use for her rangy right and she scores well to Meester’s head and body through the first minute. Then Meester gets her swift combination counters going and she starts landing huge. Nina rocked and her defences suddenly open wide. Leighton pounds Neens to the body, her mitts drifting low, keying on that purple waistband of Dobrev’s bottoms. Referee Hilarie straining to get a better look at where those shots are landing, but apparently sees nothing wrong though Neens stiffening in pain as she is forced against the ropes. A terrific, lathering beatdown occurs, perhaps the most monstrously memorable of Leighton Meester’s career to date. Nina’s legs crumble and she lands in a seated heap leaning against the ropes, sobbing with pain and heartbreak. Leighton goes to the neutral corner to watch as Nina pathetically paws at the ropes trying to pull herself up, but her shell-shocked body won’t obey. Hilarie Burton’s count reaches 10 and it is all over. KO10 Leighton Meester as the Gossip Girl cast and fans go wild.

After: Great win for Leighton Meester, who seemed to gain determination after that R2 knockdown. She was clearly the superior fighter tonight, though Nina Dobrev fought well and came heartbreaking close. Things don’t get any easier for Neens, as Leighton insists on a taking the weeping Nina on a walk of shame showing her conquest off to her whooping “Gossip Girl” castmates and to the sullen, discouraged members of “The Vampire Diaries” cast. Leighton ends the walk by shoving Nina towards her corner, Nina trips and falls. Leighton and her supporters laugh, but Nina turns and glares up at her tormenter through tear-streaked eyes. It could be this is a feud that has just begun. In any case, a great night for the fans and the CW bosses.
