Before:

Welterweight action sees two of the top fighters in the division squaring off in what could be the most anticipated match of the night. For the first time, Kate Upton and Karen Gillan meet in the ring, and the whole FCBA expects sparks to fly. Upton’s feuds with Fates girls are well documented, but Karen Gillan may be a whole new level. Gillan was a former member of Lookout Atlantic Boxing, Upton’s BBU stable affiliate, but Fates signed Gillan off of waivers. Since, the redheaded actress has been nothing less than sensational, going 15-3 in the FCBA and BBU, nearly winning the Diamond Boxing Tournament. Tonight is the moment where Gillan either proves Fates right for adding her or Lookout right for letting her go.

The press room is tense as both fighters make their way into the press conference, both girls staring daggers at the other. After several intense seconds, Karen reaches for her mic first.

“It was Fates’s decision to acquire me from Lookout,” Gillan starts, “I am going to prove that was the right decision. Kate, you have had battles with every other girl in my stable, always getting the better end of the bargain. But those are all tainted victories. Your epic series with Taylor Swift – she is a lightweight and smaller than you. Your battles with Emily DiDonato – she is a lightweight, only lost to you in JMDD competition, and beat you on the beach in regulation fights. Ana Beatriz Barros is ten years older than you.” Karen pauses, “You have never stepped foot in the ring with a girl from Fates like me. I am going to prove why Fates was right to take me. This is not personal. It is just good business.”

Upton rolls her eyes, “Now that the actress is done monologing,” the press laughs, “I will keep this simple. Your whole stable is inferior to me. I own every single girl in there. I will own you. When I am done, you will be begging me for mercy when you realize that you are not as good as you think you are. I am the queen and this is my league.”

Upton is introduced first for the fight, and while the crowd at the Fates event is full of those who dislike the model, the cheers for her outmatch those against her. The blonde model strides to the ring, removing her robe to reveal a simple blue sports bra and matching trunks with orange gloves. The model paces around the ring, her face full of determination as she paces.

Gillan steps out from the back to applause, but much to Upton’s pleasure, the crowd is not as in favor of the Fates girl. Karen wastes no time, covering the ground to the ring with her long strides before removing her robe to reveal a pink sports bra with matching trunks and gloves. The two welters get in each others faces, and Upton is looking up at her opponent for one of the few rare times. The referee steps in and asks them to touch gloves. Gillan puts hers out but Upton backs off. The ref motions Gillan to step back and he calls for the bell for ten rounds of welterweight action.

Round 1:

Both girls start circling each other, Kate sizing up Karen’s reach advantage as the redhead jabs at the blonde. Gillan bounces a left off of Upton’s gloves before striking the blonde in her ribs. Karen lines up the left follow-up but Kate fires off a quick right into the actress’ face, knocking her backwards. Upton goes body as Gillan protects her head as Upton closes distance and fires blows into the actress’ toned body. Karen quickly clinches and forces a break early. The two girls resume circling, this time with Upton taking the offensive as Gillan wards off the model with well-timed jabs. Kate dodges a right jab and lands two blows into Karen’s ribs, drawing a slight grunt out of the taller fighter before Karen responds with a right straight that catches Kate flush in her mouth. Gillan doesn’t chase and the two girls return to circling as the round ends, with Upton taking the first on points, wide.

Round 2:

Gillan more cautious to start the second, knowing that a false move could let Upton power through her and wear her down. The redhead gets her jab working early again, with the blonde counterpunching. Kate finds a left through to Karen’s face and knocks the older fighter backwards, the blonde showing off her strength as she pounds the redhead’s body. Karen is quick to clinch with her opponent, forcing the referee to make the break. Upton moves back in after the restart, but Gillan is ready for her, catching the blonde with a straight body blow and then putting her longer reach to use, keeping the model at bay as she tees off on her. Kate keeps her guard up and goes for counters, but the blonde just does not have the reach she needs to respond to Karen. Gillan knows it at just keeps on jabbing to the bell, coming back to take the second round on points.

Round 3:

Both girls settling into their rhythms as the third round begins and Upton turns up the tempo early, going for the taller girl’s body, the blonde looking to batter the redhead and take away her mobility advantage. Gillan plants her feet and starts launching one-two straights at Upton, forcing the blonde to back off. The two begin circling, and while Gillan has a reach advantage, but Upton’s experience helps her work blows into Gillan’s body despite the reach difference. Karen takes a right to her ribs and winces, forcing her to back off. Kate presses forward and takes a left straight to her nose as Karen finds her mark. Gillan now steps forward and tags Upton’s body as the blonde is quick on the clinch to force a break. The ref separates the two and the round comes to an end, with Gillan taking in on points.

Round 4:

Kate is quick out of her corner as she avoids Karen’s jabs and sets up in close quarters, hammering the actress’s ribs as Karen struggles in the closer range. Gillan’s guard protects her head, but Upton easily knocks her back into the ropes as it looks like the blonde has a new strategy for the fight. Karen gets a quick clinch in the ropes to force a break, and the redhead keeps her distance from the blonde out of the break. Gillan jabs at Upton, landing a right, but the blonde gets away from the redhead’s follow up. The two girls begin circling, and while Karen is landing her jabs, Kate is always countering and getting the better of the trades, slowly working the taller girl backwards. The bell rings and the two fighters return to their corners, with Kate taking the fourth on points.

Round 5:

Gillan ready for Upton’s offensive to start the fifth and the redhead lands two jabs before the blonde nearly takes the redhead’s head off with a right hook! Karen staggering backwards into the ropes and on comes Kate! The model unloads on the actress, working strong punches into the taller girl’s body and the ref is watching closely. Gillan keeps her guard up to protect her head, but Upton is hammering away on her body until the redhead clinches and gets the break she needs. Out of the break, the two welters circle each other, but Upton only pauses a few seconds before charging back at Gillan, taking a strike but going straight back to the taller girl’s body from close range. Karen’s arms are cramped in the close quarters exchange and the redhead can barely punch back in the flurry of blows. The bell rings to save the redhead, but it’s Kate’s round on points by shutout as the blonde hits her stride.

Round 6:

Kate charges out of her corner and Karen meets the model’s aggression with her own, connecting with the first strike of the round. Upton recovers and tags Gillan’s ribs and following up to her torso, and the redhead drops back. Karen plants her feet and launches a right that hits Kate in her chin, stopping the blonde’s offensive. The redhead strings together her punches, knocking the blonde back into the ropes. Kate bounces off the ropes and hammers a left into Karen’s body, giving the Lookout girl the chance to escape from the ropes. The two start circling each other, both probing the other girl’s guard. Upton hits a right through Gillan’s guard and the redhead drops back. The blonde steps forward and Karen hits her in her shoulder before finding a right to her foe’s torso. The bell rings after a close round, and these two girls head into the seventh without a knockdown.

Round 7:

Both welterweights begin to show signs of fatigue as they do not charge out of their corners. They start the round by circling each other again, trading jabs to the other girl’s guard. Karen turns up the tempo, throwing more punches at Kate, and the model keeps her guard up before closing the distance. Gillan lands a right to Upton’s body, but Upton hammers a right through Gillan’s guard to knock the redhead backwards. Kate pounces forward, unloading on Karen’s guard and body. Karen keeps her guard steady and goes for the clinch, forcing a break. The referee separates the two women and the two resume circling each other. The two welters trade jabs, but neither girl is able to land the blow that turns the tide of the fight. The bell rings and the two go back to their corners, and this fight may go the distance.

Round 8:

The two girls get out of their corners and it’s all Gillan early. Karen hits a left into Kate’s chin early and the model drops back. Gillan pounds her body, connecting with rights and lefts to Upton’s ribs. Kate gets a clinch to force a break and the two girls start circling each other. Kate lands a left jab and goes for the right follow-up, but Karen connects with an uppercut that leaves Upton wobbly! Kate staggers backwards and Karen tags her with two more strikes to her chin. Upton covers her head but Gillan slams a right through her guard and down goes Upton! The first knockdown of the fight goes to Karen in the eighth round and the ref has started to count. Kate gets to all fours and pushes herself up, the blonde satisfying the ref on the mandatory. Karen charges back in and Kate lands a right to the actress’s toned midriff, forcing her backwards. Upton takes a swing at Gillan but the redhead gets out of the way and crushes a right into the blonde’s jaw, nearly sending her down again! Kate covering up as Karen unloads on the model, driving her into the ropes. Gillan splits Upton’s guard with a left and follows up with a right, and Upton’s sinking into the ropes AND THE REF STEPS IN! Upton slowly falls to the canvas and your winner by TKO8, Karen Gillan!

After:

Gillan with the biggest win of her career as she raises her fists and the Lookout corner has to be thinking about how they let Fates sign Gillan for nothing. Karen mounts the ringpost and waves to the crowd as Kate is slowly helped to her stool. The redhead dismounts the ringpost and walks over to the blonde, who stares defiantly into Karen’s eyes.

“I will get my revenge,” Upton vows, “I’ve beaten your whole stable. I will beat you.”

Gillan stares back down at her former stablemate, “Kate, this is not about the future. This is about today. I won.” The redhead turns her back, striding away from Upton.

The arena goes silent to hear what Gillan has to say in her post fight interview with Valerie van der Graaf.

“I came here to prove I am a top fighter.” Karen tells the her. “I’ve beaten some of the best girls in the league. I am here to stay.” With that, the redhead leaves, arguably in a position to get a FCBA welterweight title shot and hold both the BBU and FCBA belts together.

Kate talks to Valerie moments later, vowing revenge, “I have no intention of losing to anyone, let alone some girl from Fates. I will get her back. That is a promise.”
