Before: It’s become one of the most intense rivalries in boxing with the fate of the bantamweight division more and more often hanging in the balance. Fishel getting in Kelly’s face and ruffling feathers every chance she gets—Dani with bludgeoning KO over Eliza Dushku has shown the volume punching and head movements she needs to compete with slicksters and she’s arguable never looked better. “I’ve read Kelly’s book,” Dani grins, “I get it now. I’ve seen her, I’ve tasted her power, experienced the quickness and I’ve got the answers. What’s SHE going to do? That’s the question—what’s she going to do when I’m on her, when I just keep coming when everyone else she’s faced has given up. I’m banking in Kelly’s arrogance papering over a quaking little punk in there and I’m going to find it.” Hu surprising many pundits by taking this fight, overruling her management who think it’s time to avoid Dani for a while. “Fishel has got to learn her place,” growls Kelly, “I’ve toyed with her in the past, but this time she gets hurt, Her insolence is unbearable and won’t be tolerated any longer.” Kelly in black sports bra, high cut red aerobics trunks, low ponytail, Dani in teal sports bra, grey cotton boy cut trunks, low ponytail.

During R1: Dani on like as freight train, bobbing side to side, pulling harsh wide blows from either fist into Kelly’s ribs and hips. Hu grimacing at the ferocity, give ground in good order, closing up her stance, feeding Fishel the backhand jab, turning over the hook as she steps back, falls to the left, Dani the effective aggressor in a wide ranging round that visits every inch of canvas.

R2: Hu puts on a sharpshooting clinic. She doubles up on the jab, just to get Dani committed defensively, then starts landing payoff punches hard to the head. Early on, a decoy jab sets up a whistling right hand—Kelly bending in close with the punch between Dani’s eyes, shouldering Fishel off balance, Midway through, Kelly biting off that pretty hook as she pivots lefts, stuns Dani—Hu doubles and triples the hook, swatting the mouthpiece off Fishel’s teeth and a stamping right hand in the bridge of the nose has Dani backpedaling wobbly butt. Fishel hurt, coming forward like old Tyson—she’s catching the downward hacking right hand on her left eye, getting chewed up as Hu pulls lean-away hooks in rapid fire sequence to the temple and right jawline. Fishel busted up, bleeding from the nose and stumbling—vintage Kelly Hu shutout.

R3: As promised, Dani Fishel keeps coming. Hu shocked to see a rejuvenated Fishel bounce up off her stool and bring the fight right to the champ. Hu closing up the stance, but Dani using that little step to the right, chucking in the hooks from the side, bangs Kelly off balance with choppy lefts ion her mouth and chest, Fishel weaving in close, getting off in clobbering sequences—she’s getting great hip rotation on her punches, putting her torso behind blows that splatter loud against Hu’s flanks. Kelly’s back touches the ropes this round, but she’s able to flurry, spin out before Fishel can really lock on. Round to Dani.

R4: Dani issuing that stubby little jab to the chest out of her crouch, opening Hu’s stance up and leaving her vulnerable to Fishel’s jump-in wide hook on the jaw. Kelly falling back, forced to the ropes more consistently this round—Dani’s able to get her head on Asian chest, muscling and mauling the champ, pinning her to the ropes and tucking in punches in smothering action,. Kelly baring her teeth—working hard to shoulder Dani off and jerk in her counters—sweaty work in the trenches just the way Fishel likes it.

R5: Kelly opens up the canvas again, pivoting off the hook—she’s pounding that right eye of Dani’s closed with constant, vicious leather. Unbelievable tempo to the fight through 5—girls are emptying buckets of punches on one another—Kelly dominant when the fight’s in the middle of the ring—Dani taking over whenever it drifts to the perimeter. Hu does a good job keeping her back off the ropes, turning Dani around the ring—takes another close round.

R6: Kelly RIPS Dani early with those hooks on the ye—freezing the stunned challenger, then piling on, landing the 4thm 5th, and 6th hook as she steps left, busting open that eye—Dani hunching forward in pain. All Kelly as she circles, punching jabs, straight right hands into that ruined right eye, hooking it, even bending into a right cross that lands with 100% elbow on it. Fishel wobbly butt, on her heels, but still trying to come forward—it’s a sniper’s dream as Kelly picks her apart. At the bell—Dani’s face awash in red—Kelly lifts her mitts and purrs—Kelly’s getting her in there now.

R7: Dani with some fearsome early digs to Kelly’s waist, but the champion’s legs move her into the clear, that flicking, slashing jab establishes range and those cruel hooks continue to bite and hack at Dani’s head. Fishel weaving, getting low, doing a nice job of evading some of this stuff, but Hu’s dialed in, getting her angles, and dictating everything that happens in the ring at this point. Fishel slumping on her stool during the break—she’s getting a lot of work done, psychologically and physically.

R8: Dani keeps up that hellish body attack and finally gets to Kelly’s legs as accumulation takes effect. Hu squaring up with a pained expression, palming Dani back by her shoulders, covering up and laying in close with Fishel. Dani using her left shoulder to bump the crowding champion off, then heaving it in—big beefy rips on the gut, backing Kelly up, forcing her to a seat at the ropes, this is lusty stuff from the challenger—she’s got Kelly tying to lay over one side or the other in an attempt to blunt the incoming—Dani uncaring if she misses or glances, she just keeps throwing, knowing volume is the key to victory. Hu absorbs a beating, unable to counter effectively and her Asian eyes are starting to swell as Dani mixes it up well this round.

R9: Dani jumping out like it’s the first round—Hu discouraged to see challenger’s maddening grin as Fishel bibs and weaves, spits that little jab to the chest and ROARS over the top with a surprising right cross! Hu caught on the temple, topples back and sets up on the ropes with her left shoulder pointed at Dani. Fishel sweeping in a wide left hook to the belly button of Hu, shakes those legs, shoulders Kelly to a seat on the ropes on follow through, Fishel steps right as Hu forms up—Kelly’s right mitt at her cheek, left hand down—Dani all compact, exploding hooks out of her crouch against Kelly’s chest and MOUTH! KELLY’S HURT! Hu going limp against the strands, hands suddenly drooping—Dani bends into a bashing overhand right—Hu dreamily swaying to her right! Dani dipping to the right pulling a wrecking ball across Hu’s teeth—listless head snap as Hu’s torso sways to the left—she’s helpless. Another booming right hand, another hook square in the face and HU GOES DOWN! Kelly Hu seated, awkwardly at the ropes, legs twisted beneath her and she’s OUT! DANI FISHEL with a spectacular KOP9 is the NEW< UNDISPUTED BANTAM CHAMPION!

After: Dani leaps away, bawling tears of joy as her teammates flood the ring—she leaves Kelly Hu a devastated ruin slumped at the ropes. Fishel coming SO close against Kelly in their previous encounter, then pulling of the upsets of the year by beating down Eliza and now THIS! Fishel re-enters most pound-for-pound lists after sustained brilliant pressure-fighter performances. “It’s great to know that I’m still improving,” says a giddy new champion. “I credit Eliza and Kelly with forcing me to grow—they’re both great fighters and I’ve had to get better to compete with them.” When asked about the inevitable rematches, Dani is business like: “I’ll do whatever my management feels is right—we’ll fight whomever, I feel in my heart I’ve beaten Kelly twice, and Eliza’s got some question marks. Maybe it’s time they settled who’s the real number one contender before I look at a rematch. If they fought, I’d think I’d acknowledge the winner.” Unmistakable glint of mischief  in the kid’s eye—can’t resist pulling the strings.
