Boxing on the Beach: New Zeeland

Before: Navi taking a long flight to New Zealand to face Vallance in her own backyard (more or less): not a lot of money in the Rawat budget for frills: she arrives only 2 days before the fight, making jet lag a bit of a factor. "I'm not worried about it," a confident Rawat tells Pac-rim fight press en route to the beach. "My guys and I feel that international exposure is the best way to grow my profile. I might not be able to get a Lopez or Heigl in the States, but if I'm big enough overseas, those fights could happen in Europe, or Japan or wherever - so this fight is an important stepping stone towards that goal." Vallance jam packed with fighting curves herself - she's a huge name from Bangkok to Melbourne - but she too lacks US exposure. "DOA didn't open as widely as we anticipated," shrugs Holly in prefight, "but whatever - that's show business. I know Americans will love my look - whenever I wrestle private shows in L.A. everyone's really receptive and enthusiastic - so I just have to keep fighting and beating Navi Rawat types until I get a foothold Stateside." Holly in black bra and panties (DOA), shoulder length blonde tousle, black gloves. Navi in peach bikini, black gloves. Converted beach volleyball court - ringposts set up directly on sand - slammin' hot sun overhead.

During R1,2: Navi a little sluggish, a little culture shocked as 'boxing' rules down under come highly inflected with Asian sensibilities. Holly pounce-stepping on Navi - being first with a jab or jumped-in lead right, then clinching with a neck clasp and either pulling Navi down to sand (Rawat on top, snug inside Holly's guard) or tripping her to sand (Holly on top, mounting Navi, huddling in close to her). These count as 'clinches' - not fouls - ref forced to spend time prying the girls apart, standing them up and restarting them. Result is Holly can win rounds with very little meaningful punches - rest of the time she's just bogging Navi down in the sand, waiting for ref's break.

R3: Rawat keeps her feet, sharpens up. Navi electrifies Holly with a jolting left uppercut early - putting blonde wobbly butt: Rawat flashing fast hands and murderous heft as she cluster-bombs blonde paunch in follow up. Holly hurt to ropes, covering up: Navi pushing her way in, being very muscular and big as she looks to wear Vallance down ropeside. Holly tieing up - hard to engage her in any sustained way with all the clinch-tolerant ref: Navi forced to work hard to wrestle her limbs in the clear, then snatch at blonde ribs or tummy before Vallance can glom on again.

R4: Navi finding her groove - Holly looking disheveled, concerned: Rawat much more aggressive and dynamic than anticipated. Navi nibbling her dukes at her mouth - dipping side to side Tyson style as she drives in: Vallance hard pressed to sidestep her girl on sandy footing. Midway through, HARD Rawat left hook takes Holly across her tummy: blonde immediately crimps up, turns away, falls to her knees hugging herself. Vallance gamely up - but she's hurt and body-sore: Navi has her way at the ropes to bell.

R5: Holly fighting imaginatively off the ropes - rolling punches face-in-gloves, then nipping back counter hooks and uppercuts, pulling Navi into clinches at every opportunity. Rawat bull-strong here - pushing her head in between Holly's mitts - pushing at Holly's arms and wrists, struggling to open her up, then marauding with fast bursts of clubbing rights and lefts. Weight of shot pronounced: Holly's scoring, having no effect; Navi's scoring, hurting Holly, buckling her knees off body shots. Rawat on top bell to bell - really smothering Vallance under a blistering sun.

R6: Holly pulling Navi down on top of her against the sand - Rawat actually draws warnings for trying to squirm-in some bludgeoning punches! Rawat cranky - doesn't understand the fighting culture - complaining during ref's breaks - but she keeps at Holly: blonde can't hold sand against belligerent brunette. Navi pressing - even when she gets taken down and held - she's always and everywhere the aggressor.

R7: Holly panting - SHE'S the one looks jet lagged. Too much Navi - Rawat stomping forward in sand, battering Holly at the stagger all around the ring - beating blonde arms, flanks, skull with free swinging heft as Holly totters in retreat. When Navi can pin Vallance against ropes - brunette unleashes a thick body attack, stuffing Holly's paunch full of right hands, scrubbing side to side on her rack, constantly loosening Holly up. Midway through, Navi pulls Holly's head forward, rips her a left hook to the body, then a sumptuous left uppercut carved in between Holly's mitts. Vallance goes out - sprawling backwards against ropes all fluttering eyelashes and pursed lips, then bouncing face first to sand. KO7 Navi Rawat.

After: Rawat all grins - trussed up at times in this fight, often frustrated but rarely really hurt: Navi continues to show progress as one of boxing's premiere little freight-train brawlers. "They get away with murder over here," Rawat tells one Celebrity Ring int'l correspondent. "I spent more time in the sand than I did ON it!" Vallance all used up, looking limp and wasted on her stool - fight is reported as an upset throughout the Pac-rim, but Navi clearly on a different level than bouncy blonde comp today.
