Boxing After Dark

Before: Key matchup for ingenue blondes trying to build careers--one girl’s coming out of this a hot prospect, the other’s going to have to bide her time for the next break--you gotta young these young fighters willing to take a risk, Similar styles, similar looks in the ting, battle could come down to intangibles, Piper in tan suede bikini, Claire in white string bikini.

During R1: Girls circling clockwise, but Perabo stamping her jab to the jugs and mug of her for, pounds Claire into a stupor over the first 2 minutes as Danes frames her face with her mitts and gets her head smacked back. Final minute--Piper has her girl broken down with the ramrod stick--she starts dropping the right hand with vicious intentions. Danes getting WHACKED flush--butt flying backwards as she is clocked to the right, somehow staying upright as she spills to the ropes. Lanky follow up from Perabo--she lashes away with lefts and rights on her helpless foe, beating Danes into a KO daze at the bell, but unable to actually drop her foe. Big 10-8 round for Perabo without the knockdown--Claire busted up, badly hurt, gets the salts in her corner.

R2: Piper slinging right hands from the hip, Claire on flat feet stands and trades--crowd treated to an unexpected Pier 6 as both girls fight against type, Nothing like classy, slender boxers baring their teeth and laying into one another with hateful slugging and PERABO IS WOBBLED! Dreadful give and take shakes Piper’s knees--she’s wide-eyed, pushing her punches as Danes beats Perabo into retreat. Furious pace stalls late--Danes punched out, Piper ragged with punishment--they slap and fall in together at the ropes as it’s Perabo’s turn to make a gut check.

R3: Boxing look returns--both girls have had scares and look to shore up fundamentally this round. Midway through, Danes out jabbing Piper, works her girl, then lands a hand on the jaw that freezes Perabo out over her  feet. Good strong follow up from Danes as she bulls into Piper with shoulders and elbows, getting the dazed blonde up into the ropes, then licking away at her waist and head from either side, Perabo clinching, but unable to get her legs to move--she takes a beating to the bell as Danes evens up the score cards.

R4: Pipes legging it to her left, steering Danes with a flicking doubled up stick--Claire following, getting nibbled about the eyes as Perabo keeps her distance. Final minute, Claire stalking, walking Perabo down--Danes launches a wild right hand over the top, catching piper pulling straight back and PERABO GOES DOWN! Pipes in a dazed heap, hurt all over again at the ropes as Claire steps through the girl’s legs on momentum. Danes just bashing her way through Piper’s defenses--Perabo up at 8, but QUAKING from the waist down.

R5: Danes hungry, eager in her corner--Perabo hurting, anxious in hers. Claire launches off her stool, at the bell, hounding Piper into her corner and tearing into her with slicing lefts and rights, Slim bodies struggling and lunging--Piper wilting as her ribs and chin are clapped over and over again--Danes letting it all go in a desperate bid to finish her rival. PERABO GOES DOWN! Pipes in a dazed heap, hurt all over again at the ropes as Claire steps through the girl’s legs on momentum, Danes just bashing her way through Piper’s defenses--Perabo up at 8, but QUAKING from the waist down.

R5: Danes hungry, eager in her corner--Perabo hurting, anxious in hers. Claire launches off her stool at the bell, hounding Piper into her corner and tearing into her with slicing lefts and rights. Slim bodies struggling and lunging--Piper wilting as her ribs and chin are clapped over and over again--Danes letting it all go in  desperate bid to finish her rival. PERABO GIES DOWN! Piper slumping to her knees under the lashing assault--Danes’ chest heaving with exertion as the ref shoves her back. After 8--Claire surging in again, bending in and down behind a looping right hand as Piper pushes her hands out pathetically. Punch ragdolls Perabo in her corner--she’s helpless, and Danes piles on! Savage beating from Danes shifts from one foot to the other, putting baseball bat swings into a stunned Piper Perabo until FINALLY the ref steps in! Danes leaping away in triumph--Perabo shivering uncontrollably in the ref’s arms from the merciless beat down--TKO5 Claire Danes.

After: Surprising action bout from two technical blondes--pride taking over from good sense to give the crowd it’s money’s worth. Neither girls pared the horses--both hurt plenty ion this fight, both forced to scoop up reserves they didn’t know they had. Danes damaging Perabo badly in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, went for it all in the 5th, risking exhaustion if Perabo had been able to stand. “She was done,” says a breathless Claire in post fight, “I saw it in her eyes after I put her down in the 4th. She was pleading with me to end it. I don’t think she’ll ever get back what I took from her tonight.”
