Before: Liu agrees to meet Packard at 105 where Kelly remains unbeaten, and Fix sanctions the bout for a title. Interesting test for Lucy who’s banged the bangers well enough, but Packard the best pure boxer she’s ever faced, with a solid defensive foundation. Black string bikini for Packard, red for Liu--tiny 2 oz gloves for both. Fight held outdoors at the Hollywood Bowl.

During r1: Packard starting off using her height, alternating a poking with a stinging jab, and working in the hook early, but Lucy steals the play from the second minute on. Liu missing the head early, switches focus to Packard’s trim body, lunging up from the crouch to hurl thumping uppercuts into the stomach and rib cage of the blonde. Booming single blows put hurt on Packard’s face as she goes purely defensive by the final moments of the mound.

R2: Packard again initiating, making Liu miss wildly to the head, but Lucy able to adjust, leaping in with her hands low at her side and turning into hammering single shots to Kelly’s breasts and belly.

R3: Liu a little too lackadaisical getting back outside this round, as Kelly starts to put punches together. Nice sequence for Packard midway through as she speedbags Lucy’s for points (left jab, right cross, backhand right, left hook). Liu rattled, off balance, but unhurt, sharpens up and has Packard cringing from body shits again by the bell.

R4: Liu more flat footed this round, inching closer, staying underneath Packard’s jab and taking something off he punches to land more consistently upstairs, Girls trade jabs and hooks, dipping and sliding artfully around one another, but in the final minute, Lucy bends low, comes up with a gouging left under the ribs, left uppercut to the face that bangs Kelly’s head violently back. First form break for Packard as she staggers sideways with wide-eyed shock as Liu steps into her. Lucy with hands at her sides, brazenly put her chest on Kelly’s shoulder, walking the blonde. Back and clouting her about the head and shoulders with insolent punches from the hips.

R5: Packard with new respect. Stays outside, pushing the jab and overreacting to every move Liu makes, Lucy happy to play tag with Kelly’s gut, feinting, leaping in and out, and staying loose.

R6: Lucy stands right in front of Kelly, countering swiftly with both hands, and a wide right hand to the ear knocks Packard onto one foot in the final minute. Kelly hurt, bobbing with her gloves at her chin, does a good job of making Liu swing over the top, but Lucy is racking up a substantial lead to this point.

R7: Liu still dramatically swooping and rushing at Packard, but the high energy attack seems to be taking its toll, and Kelly is taking the punches a lot better this round. Packard still unable to really mount much offense, but she cuts off the ring this round, and once again touches Lucy with quick lefts and rights in combination to at least keep Liu honest.

R8: Kelly Packard still fresh, up tempo’s the fight, and Lucy Liu finds herself getting hit clean for the first time in the fight. Kelly finding the range with the jab as Liu’s upper body a little less elusive, and Lucy’s legs seems to be a half a step slower than they were to begin the fight. Packard hooking off the jab to Liu’s body, the small glove making a high cracking noise against Liu’s taut tummy and ribs, Liu in retreat the entire round, coughs up the shutout to Kelly Packard.

R9: Liu definitely looking a little leg-weary, still manages to catch Kelly with a crushing right uppercut lead from 3 feet away, and Packard starts this round HURT! Liu swaying her upper body in front of Kelly, brushing her head across Packard’s tummy as she drags a hard left hand in behind, then straightening to smack a right off Kelly’s jaw. Packard soaks it up, and Liu begins to fade, and by the midway point, Kelly’s sharp jab is finding Liu’s Asian eyes with heartrending accuracy. In the final minute, with Liu stepping straight back beneath quick one twos from Kelly Packard cracks the brunette with a hard straight right to the teeth, nearly flooring Liu. Lucy hurt, bending low and moving her head as Packard helps herself to a little Chinese--clubbing her fists across the lower back of her opponent at the bell.

R10: Lucy Liu looking unfashionably battered, eyes swollen into slits, mouth curled into a wince, steps out and once again lights Packard up to begin this final round. Liu stepping forward, hands low, puts her face on Kelly as she sweeps her punches in wide arcs behind her rotating torso, Packard, stepping back, taking the punches well, rips the short right uppercut to stun Liu midway through he round, and by the final minute, Kelly Packard has Lucy Liu in trouble. Liu pouting, retreating, gets speed bagged again, and this time Packard rocks the brunette’s head back with the final right hand of the series, Liu battered, stumbles to the ropes, reaching to clinch as Packard, blue eyes glittering intently, puts together a withering finishing flurry. Banging a double left hooks to the ribs, Packard hammers nat Liu’s lips with chopping right hands and LIU GOES DOWN!!! Lucy helpless in her corner, tragically clambers up the ropes, and sags against the turnbuckle. Bell rings as Kelly kisses a hard right hand off Lucy’s sternum, and Liu is saved. Despite the strong finish, Kelly p loses a tough contest by a single point of all cards.

After: Lucy Liu was not an unbeaten fighter coming into this bout, but she certainly has an air of invincibility that was seriously tarnished in this bout. Liu’s power failure late in the bout really pointed to poor energy management and lack of economy--the flip side to throwing nothing but bombs all night long. Typical consistent performance from Packard, but she simply gave away too many rounds trying to avoid the stoppage. Great legs vs. Great Hands, with legs getting the nod on the night.
