RETRO BOUT: November 1968

Prefight: This rivalry was set in motion years ago. Both have been in Elvis movies, Jocelyn in “Tickle Me” and Yvonne in “Kissin’ Cousins” and “It Happened at the World’s Fair”. Jocelyn has made more movies but Yvonne landed the Batgirl role in the batman TV show. Ironically. Both are now guest starring on the same “It Takes a Thief” episode of Robert Wagner’s ABC series being filmed here in mid-November 1968. The subject of “Who was the best ‘Elvis’ movie love interest?” comes up, and each actress claims to hold that distinction. Ironically, a boxing ring set remains in the adjacent stage. My guess is we are about to settle this issue.

Entering The Ring: Who needs an arena audience when the individual tensions and pride are at Paramount (oops, sorry) level. Jocelyn’s bikini accentuates her concave abdomen while her tanned, taut arms, legs and face are stunning to view. Yvonne’s hour glass figure (37-23-35) impresses even Jocelyn supporters, but as hard as this is to believe, she started out as a ballet dancer in a prestigious foreign company.

Round 1: Jocelyn’s determined look is first noticeable on her chiseled, beautiful face. Yvonne doesn’t fear her, so offense takes center stage early. Jocelyn moves quickly to confront the buxom brunette. She immediately lands some punches into Yvonne’s breasts, almost to try to make them an issue. Yvonne feels those blows, but is tougher than she looks. She winds up with her right arm and hooks it into Jocelyn’s face which wobbles the beauty early. She stumbles back into the ropes where Yvonne forces the action. She is not the quickest puncher but knows she wants to attack Jocelyn’s face to get a psychological advantage, Jocelyn blocks those punches but cannot escape. Yvonne rubs her chest up against Jocelyn, pinning her while she continues the assault. Yvonne decides to punish Jocelyn in her sides since Lane is protecting her upper body. This is one of those rounds that seems to last 10 minutes.

Round 2: Round starts at the same frantic pace as the previous one. Yvonne presses towards Jocelyn, but she is ready this time. Keeping her guard up, Yvonne’s attempt to hit her again fails, while Jocelyn counterpunches with straight shots to Yvonne’s shapely waist. Breathing becomes difficult for Craig as air is forced from her chest cavity. Jocelyn hits her time and time again in the midsection. Yvonne is losing strength die to the pain and her breathing problems. She crumbles to the mat with the referee stopping Jocelyn’s onslaught to administer the mandatory count. Yvonne, with the help of the ropes, makes her ascension on the count of 7/ The referee looks in her eyes, determining she is able to continues. Jocelyn yells to Yvonne that she is just starting, while Yvonne only wants to get to her corner.

Round 3: Jocelyn wants to continue the attack immediately, but her upbeat tempo for the first 6 minutes of the fight forces her to reduce her aggressiveness now, This hiatus gives Yvonne an opportunity to recharge herself and regain her senses. Neither presses the issue this round with Jocelyn content to throw a few token jabs, and Yvonne content to avoid further punishment. This round is in stark contrast to the intense pace of the first 2. The bell rings with Yvonne looking as if she continue.

Round 4: Yvonne comes out with an all-or-nothing attitude. She realizes that Jocelyn is better conditioned. Jocelyn’s legs have tighter muscles and her arms are more for,. Yvonne has weight advantage, but Lane’s quickness will not allow herself to be trapped in corners. Yvonne wants to land a few good punches and take her chances. Thus, she wades into the opponent, Both stand toe to toe exchanging punches with few blocked, Jocelyn continues to work below the face—Yvonne hits above the neck. Jocelyn is cut below the eye while red marks appear on Yvonne’s breasts and stomach, the toll is being paid by both as they are becoming tired. Yvonne finally traps Jocelyn in a corner and punishes her with lefts and rights; Lane does not go down, mainly due to the ropes’ support. The round ends with both going slowly back to their corners.

Round 5: After being treated for the eye cut, Jocelyn goes onto the attack. She uses her sinewy leg muscles to outmove Yvonne, and then lands surprisingly crisp punches onto Yvonne’s midsection. She wants to end this now, because Yvonne does have the capability of making one or two powerful punches to change the fight around. Thus, Jocelyn starts what flurry she can now muster, hitting Yvonne for the first time in the face. Luring Craig’s guard higher, she then body punches Yvonne until the latter doubles over. Jocelyn then launches an overhand right to finish her to the canvas. Yvonne is on her back with her impressive chest and shape motionless. She will on arise on this occasion and is counted out while Jocelyn arrogantly struts around the ring displaying her fit frame.

Analysis: Both women were in great shape, but Jocelyn’s superior fitness, arms and leg tone and her strategy to stay on top of Yvonne was the difference. On this day, she was thrilled to have beaten to submission a woman she is often compared to from their days in Elvis Presley movies.
