1. Cheryl Ashley Wang vs Rachel Wong

Cheryl:

(23, 5’3, FCBA Debut, Free Agent, @cherbonez)

Rachel:
(27, 5’3, FCBA Debut, Free Agent, @rachelwongggg)

BEFORE:
Another battle of social media personalities in this next match as Wong goes up against Wang, and we realise the rest of us might be a little confused at this point at all the surnames blurring into each other, but after the success of our previous Scouting Mission, the rest of these social media influencers all wanted a piece of the action as well.

Cheryl Ashley boasts over 70k followers on Instagram, where she posts about mainly fashion and fitness, whereas Rachel has slightly under 38k in her quest for relevance in cyberspace. Ladies make their way down to the beach to the cheers and fanfare of their supporters, and you can tell there’s an instant rivalry forming between both women, who are only about four years apart in age, as they barely acknowledge each other as they meet for the first time.

“Everyone’s screaming for relevance these days,” Cheryl Ashley says first to reporters. “A did a little digging online and sure, Rachel’s got some potential to her, but there’s a reason why I’ve more than double the number of followers on Instagram. Let’s just say not everyone can make it in this social media game.”

“Funny you should mention that, because I did a little research of my own…” Rachel says next, her lips curling into a grin. “Ashley’s numbers are nothing but inflated, and I have the data to prove it.”

“Hmpph. Lies. It’s clear that one girl’s jealous of the other’s success,” Cheryl Ashley rolls her eyes in response. “Put up or shut up, will ya? This is supposed to be for charity.”

“Oh, I intend to put up my dukes later in the ring. I plan to expose you for the fraud you are, just like your fake followers online.”

Lean and mean builds as Cheryl and Rachel face off in the ring. The former going for a sky blue bikini and black gloves, whereas the latter going for classic olive sports bra top, bikini briefs and white gloves. No touch of the glove tonight as ladies turn back to respective corners to await the sound of the bell. Couple of rookies are entering this boxing thing and already, it sounds like they belong here. Referee calls for the opening bell and HERE WE GO with ten rounds of Flyweight action!

ROUND 1:
Besides their age difference, these two seem built the same way: toned bodies moving fast and energetic as they spend the first minute trying to get a feel of the other’s boxing prowess. It’s not as though it’s an experienced veteran going up against a newbie, so the two rookies send testing shots to each other’s heads, mostly smacking into the arms and drawing loud grunts already. They’re just not used to getting smacked in the face, which is understandable for social media influencers who’ve spent their lives cultivating their good looks for likes. Cheryl however must have taken those earlier comments personally as she lets fly a whole lot more punches than her counterpart, landing a late one-two to Rachel’s chin to send her packing. A more experienced girl would have taken those light taps and kept attacking, but Wong isn’t used to having her lips squished in by leather, and she spends the rest of the round trying to block more attacks. Cheryl takes the round wide, though it’s partially from her opponent’s lack of effort.

ROUND 2:
OKAY - here we go again as both ladies storm in for a little more action, with a little more confidence. Right now, we’ve hit the second stage of rookie boxing as the two fighters clash a lot more frequently in the ring but have resorted to the ‘foxy boxing’ stereotype of hands and arms flying in all directions at once, not really used to parries or weaves just yet and instead, more comfortable letting their fists fly whenever they sense any and every opening available. End result is not exactly pretty: Cheryl and Rachel score some stiff shots off each other’s chin and body, arms just wailing in and out, in and out, without much thought or consideration. Rachel actually proves to be the tougher girl as she nails her counterpart with a hard right to the side of her head, which draws a grunt from Cheryl’s lips. Rounds reversed as Cheryl Amanda goes running, holding her face with one glove, cursing and swearing as she retreats to fight another round.

ROUND 3:
Rookies picking up skills fast, however, and those short pep-talks in between the rounds are refining their strategies going forward. Cheryl gesturing rudely at the bell, which makes Rachel’s nostrils flare as she charges straight for her. Cheryl, however, taking a defensive stance as she keeps her feet moving away this time from the oncoming girl, blocking plenty of Rachel’s hazardous combos before stinging Wong on the cheek with a couple of punches in turn. Cheryl’s clearly the one who’s been training in the gym a little more as she racks up points for her corner this time, and Rachel’s face is turned to the side by errant combos landing, the older influencer letting out a last gasp of shock when she takes a final one-two to the chest and tummy, right before the bell rings. Cheryl Amanda might have found her winning strategy here as she takes back the round by a close margin.

ROUND 4:
Rachel adapting to her opponent's tactics, staying at a distance this round and returning fire two-ways as girls plant nice, crisp shots on each other's face in the first minute. Same height and build means their reach is also almost identical, meaning they're squeezing in jabs from afar to bust the cheek in. Cheryl lets out a yelp after a particular one-two combo stings her to the lips, her face disappearing into leather for a flash of a second before Wong continues blitzing shots across her bow, another swipe catching her across the chin and DOWN CHERYL GOES!! Wong letting out a shout of triumph, leaping up and down as she circles back to neutral corner - the first KNOCKDOWN of the evening of the Singaporean's career, as Cheryl gets sent down to her side by the ropes! Cheryl Amanda quickly forces her chest off the ground, shaking that head as she tries to steady herself on her feet by the count of 8.

ROUND 5:
Cheryl Amanda is a little dazzled but starts off the fifth round strong, paying Wong back with a mutual bash to the mouth to mount a comeback. But that stubborn head is still reeling a little woozy from that earlier knockdown, gets more tastes of Rachel's fists as Wong bounces another overhand off the top of the head, which beats Wang backwards. Cheryl figures out she can't quite mount a successful defense without risking going down a second time, spends the rest of the round crossing her arms and absorbing attacks. Rachel doing her best to chase the other influencer down, head-hunting all the way to the bell, couple of bangs off the belly to end the round as Rachel pumps another confident hand on her way back to her corner.

ROUND 6:
Girls want to win and it shows: more flurries erupt as they clash in the center, repeatedly, more than raising charity at this point as they smash their gloves into whatever skin they find. Cheryl doing a doozy on her opponent when she deliberately (or luckily - we’ll never know) weaves to one side to avoid a cross before smacking Wong on the base of her chin with a nasty uppercut! All downhill from there on out as Rachel almost goes down, her head spinning as she backs away! Cheryl pumping in the remaining shots, left-right combos chasing after her beleaguered counterpart, but Wong manages to hold on to the bell, her body taking punishment but it’s nothing those abs can’t handle. At least for now.

ROUND 7:
Sweat-slicked bodies in the seventh as that horrid Singapore sun takes a toll on both girls. Even though they’re fighting in an enclosed area under the canopy, the humid weather doesn’t do well for their stamina as they heave and push themselves forward at the bell. Rachel still looking a little hesitant and unsteady from that last punt to her chin - she’s taking it slow out of her corner, arms up and testing the waters. It’s the seventh round and we’d say both ladies have gotten quite into the groove here, from meek newbies to rookies eager to win, at least. Cheryl Amanda definitely the aggressor in the first minute, landing leather to the arms and body and constantly pushing Rachel back. Wong in trouble as she doesn’t find an answer, occasional punt of a hand to Wang’s face doesn’t see the other girl stop her advance, and a wild blitz in one corner has Rachel reeling again in shock, as Cheryl Amanda let fly three punches straight into her nostrils! OUCH!! Wong seeing stars as a cuff across the chin SENDS HER DOWN to her side! It’s a return KNOCKDOWN from Cheryl Ashley Wang, and this time, her opponent ain’t getting up! Wong groans on her chest, trying to push off the ground, but the referee hits the count of 10 and she’s still barely off all fours! IT’S OVER!

Official Decision: Cheryl Ashley Wang defeats Rachel Wong via KO7!

AFTER:

Proud moment for one girl as she makes her professional debut in the ring, Cheryl pumping her hands as she parades across the ring and back, conscious of the many camera flashes going off to capture this moment forever on social media. Wong, on the other hand, has to swallow her pride, breathing hard as she’s helped back to her corner for the medical team to check on her.

No love lost between these two as they barely acknowledge each other afterwards, not even a handshake or nod of the head as they immediately spin back to their corners after the referee makes the result official. Perhaps a rematch is on the cards with this KO7 victory and loss - rookies barely manage to last this long in their debut match, and it’s a testament to how badly these two wanted to punish each other for the win.
