Before: All boxing waiting for Garner to really put her mark on elite fighters in her class—Berry an important roadblock for Jennifer in terms of skill. Both turned back Cat Bell, perception is that these two girls are on a par with each other, a fact of which both are keenly aware. “I know there’s been a lot of talk about me and Jenny being neck and neck,” says Halle, “but I’m a former champ in both the amateurs and the pros. Garner’s got the fixin’s , but she’s a few beatings short of a casserole if you know what I mean. I need to be careful with her, of course, but I also need to shine her up. I need to be sending this girl to her corner not wanting anymore, just to make things clear for the fans—there’s Halle, and then there’s Jenny.”

Berry in dark brown leather bikini top, pale beige hipster cut shorts (see FHM 100 for ref.), garner in red underwire bikini, white lace trim, ponytail.

During R1: Halle showing her quicks early, shocks Garner a catspaw hook, doubling and tripling it up as the brunette reels and stares, Berry not pressing on follow up—content to juke and feint, dart in off her jab with jolting lead rights, swatting hooks upside the head. Garner recovers her composure late—right hand under the right eyes, straight hard jaws keeping Halle roaming outside.

R2: Payback. Garner pumping stick, Berry banged up on a couple of early attempts in and NAILED a shrieking right cross on the teeth that has the ex champ hopping sideways. Jenny methodical on follow up—jabbing Berry’s chest to get her ropeside, bashing at the waist with chopping rights/lefts, recovering behind the jab and looking to lean in on more sizzling rights. Berry supple against the ropes, clear eyed—she’s rolling her shoulders, slipping anything uptop very effectively—but Garner’s doing good work on that mocha midriff.

R3: Jenny slightly robotic, predictable this round as she marches behind her jab, looking for the cross. Berry sidestepping, ranging right and left, much looser in her arms and shoulders, fading, then turning to keep her back off the ropes. Midway through, Berry brings the right off her hip to drop down over top Jenny’s jab—brunette stutter steps and falls prey to a slashing side to side combination that pelts Garner to her hands and knees. Once gain, Berry laying off rather than pressing—she’s stepping right, feinting with her head, just jumping in swatting potshots, then neatly turning her girl midring as Jenny gets it together.

R4: Solid boxing shutout Halle Berry. Jenny with her dukes up, taking a good shot is unhurt, but Berry’s footwork, timing and sudden attacks have the brunette mesmerized. Jen able to come forward, but unable to pull the trigger as Berry jumps in, bats away, slides right or left and escapes unscathed. Halle starting to grin—she’s comfy in there—Jen looking a little rigid.

R5: Rigid is good: shutout Jen Garner. Jennifer stepping Halle down, ignoring the head to jab at the chest, just getting her glove on Berry then turning over the right hand. Berry able to roll well with the incoming, but blunting impacts are getting her out of her game, forcing her to cover up more and more often on the ropes. Garner doing her best work on Halle’s sides and hips—heavy, smashing blows have Berry cringing forward and suffering as Jen rips it up bell to bell.

R6: More consistent Garner dominance—she’s cutting off the ring very well, banging away with the jab to steer Halle to the corners, then putting straight punches together to break down the supple defence. Berry open mouthed, frowning—she’s getting hit more, hurting to the body, and she’s fighting back only in spots, Berry relying on flashy, shoeshining combinations to spin her way out of trouble, but Garner’s gaining momentum, looking string through 6.

R7,.8,9: Garner flashing the meanest, sharpest jab this side of Famke Janssen—straight crashing lead lefts have Berry shining up badly and often retreating awkwardly in disarray. Garner stepping in and diving her right hand—straight down into the ribs, hard across the teeth—very accurate, crashing delivery has Berry shying away or swiping away at Jennifer’s body and blocking guard, but it’s all speed bag stuff—Garner’s walking through it. Jen the boss, sending Halle back to her corner more beaten, more discouraged as the fight progresses.

R10: Halle! Sudden up tempo, slashing, gambling attacks from Berry momentarily have the orthodox Garner confused. Berry spearing in lead rights, jumping to the side to swat home the hook, bending in and down with overhand rights—hard, hard punches bouncing off Garner’s skull, backing the brunette up in disarray. Power potshots from angles out of Halle—exquisite stuff as she steps right, jumps in to get off, then swivels out—Garner covered up and a step behind. Down the stretch, Berry victimizes Jen with handspeed—girls trading midring, Berry beats Garner to a series of clouting lefts and rights on the chin and jenny’s hurt! Garner wobbling to the corner, setting up her defence and is is ROCKED a hop-in right uppercut between the mitts. Garner sagging listlessly, gloves drooping—Halle unleashes, bouncing Jenny’s stupefied face as the crowd squeals. Garner won’t go out—she makes it to the bell all busted up and jazzed, Comes back UD10 Jennifer Garner.

After: Berry stomping her foot in disappointment at the decision. Halle with a bad habit of taking rounds off when she’s obviously got the ability to press—costs her against the ultra-fit Garner who chisels out a fine win. Jen looking more and more like Cat Bell in operation, and she’s matter of fact about her ambitions in the wake of this victory, “I’ve always said that my primary goal is to clean out this division. I want to be champion and I want to defend right down the line from Berry all the way to Dunning, This was huge for me: beating Halle gives me the confidence that I can turn back Bell and Theron when the time comes.
