Thanks to Fight Fanm for this repost

Before: Adidas pulls together two of its greatest house athletes to sell out Wembley Stadium in record time. Evenly matched entrants, although Hingis with the slight edge in experience – it’s expected to be close, hard fought affair. Hinges in black tennis skirt, black jogbra, bare feet, vs. Hamm in evergreen soccer shorts, black sportsbra, bare feet.

During R1: Hingis always the master ring general – with everyone in the place expecting her to box, Martini comes out slugging early, hoping to catch Hamm cold. It almost works as a searing lead right roundhouse lands flush and has Mia covering up at center ring. Hamm shows those strong legs however, soaking up Hingis furious flurry, and surviving the scare in good shape. As Martina gives up on the notion of knocking Mia out early, she is surprised to see that she can’t dance away from this opponent. Hamm cuts off the ring effortlessly, forcing Martini to fight for all three minutes.

R2: Martina adopts a slightly more flat footed approach, using a lot of head and upperbody movement, and slowly establishes a level of class above Mia this round. In every exchange, Hingis hits Mia first and last, controlling the fight with her hand speed. Mia looks to be the harder puncher, but she’s a little less active, a little more predictable with her hands.

R3-6: Masterful display of boxing skill from Martina Hingis. Making the adjustment early to Mia’s fantastic legs, Martina turns this into a potshotting match, simply outworking Mia in every round. No clinching, no holding, barely a backwards step from either woman – the two trade combinations from bell to bell, making constant contact throughout the rounds. The difference is in Hingis’ reflexes and ring smarts – she’s the more elusive of the two, blocking and slipping a lot of Mia’s shots, and the sharper, busier, more accurate puncher. Hamm unhurt in these rounds, but outfought all the same.

R7: Martina up tempos, setting down on her shots and looking to get Mia in trouble. Digging hard to the solid body of the soccer star. Hinges sets up left hooks to the chin which lift Mia onto her toes. Again, Hamm soaks up Martina’s power in good order in good shape, and once again, Martina has to back off and box – easily winning the round, hurting her opponent, but not finishing her.

R8: Tremendous back and forth action as the two athletes let their pride show this round. Toe to toe slugging brings the crowd to its feet as the girls simply stand and lay into one another, swaying back and forth on planted legs, cranking hooks with everything they’ve got. Mia has the early edge, but gives it up midway through the round. Hingis seems to be ready to salt away another round, but in the final minute, a crashing exchange of simultaneous hooks leaves Martina woozy. Hamm shakes off her own pain, and dips her shoulder into another hook, banging Hingis’ head flat against her shoulder. Hinges rocks onto her heals as Hamm surges forward, bending those powerful legs and extending into a Frazier left hook to the jaw that seals the deal. Hinges crashes to her back, arms out to either side completely out cold. Huge KO in 8 for Mia Hamm.

After: Stunning turn around as Martina Hingis was in complete control of this fight. Ahead on points, Martina’s inability to run from the soccer player proved decisive as Mia was able to force the issue with her legs. Tremendous victory for Hamm opens up the door, and establishes her credibility in the sport.
