Before: Important step up in class for Laura V - she's got a chance to move up the food chain with Charisma. "I was excited to get Charisma before," says an eager Laura V in prefight, "but after I saw her go out against Biel? Goosepimples. Now, I will definitely challenge her chin early - go right at her hard - because you never know. If she's a little hinky from Jessica blasting her out, I'll find out. I couldn't have picked a better time to climb over Charisma!"

Carpenter visibly irritated by all the Biel/whack talk - but veteran brunette knows it's all part of the territory. "It's natural for people to doubt you after something like a KO1," Carpenter shrugs. "Those things happen and you just put them behind you. For the record - I think the ref panicked a little - Jessica's a great finisher and he saw me hurt, so he pulled the trigger, but I honestly don't think I was that buzzed. So - if Laura wants to go right at my chin, I'll go right her ribcage and we'll see what happens. Personally, I'll take that trade all night long if I can get it!"

Laura in royal blue bikini with graceful white flowers-and-bird line print; white gloves. Charisma in punching purple bikini, black gloves.

During R1: CC iin relaxed closed stance: left shoulder pointed at Laura; left hand at waist; right under chin. Laura in aggressive hunter's crouch; right hand at her chin, left a little lower, twitching out jabs. Carpenter calm midring - she's waiting on Laura's long right cross - rolling it with the left shoulder, then answering back thick-n'-thumping a right uppercut to LV's midsection. Willowy blonde flat and hard down there, but she's shook for points as Charisma counterpunches at will.

R2: Same relative postures - Laura in lanky attack pose, trying to get the right hand over; Charisma in closed stance, easing under Vandervoort's rights with the ol' shoulder-roll, then coming back hard underneath. CC with the limber right uppercut to Laura's stomach, then adding the snatching, short-swat left hook to svelte blonde ribs: Vandervoort routinely giving up one or two tuff touches after every miss of her own. Down the stretch - Laura swinging lanky midring: she misses the rangy right cross, but comes back a licking hook, catching CC awkwardly on face as Carpenter's looking to counter. As Charisma's startled - LV's able to reload, bend sinewy into a pouring right cross and land with authority to Carpenter's chin. CC put wobbly butt - veteran brunette immediately ties up, cuddling impatient young blonde to smother the follow up. Laura's sting trump CC's consistency as Vandervoort evens up cards.

R3: Carpenter puts on a trap-boxing, sharp-shooting clinic - sitting in the pocket, waiting on Laura, rolling/slipping her, then answering back vicious to body. Laura grunting, grimacing as Carpenter's thudding that counter-right uppercut off the sternum: blonde starting to loosen up from that shot, unable to immediately recover. Carpenter letting Laura punch her way forward, getting underneath blonde swings, then coming up close, well inside Vandervoort's reach. CC able to snap and snatch away in combination, giving Vandervoort's supple ribs and waist a terrible swiping this round. Laura's heart/legs tested - she's repeatedly shaken, bumped off her stance, walked down: CC very much the boss in a methodical, slick third.

R4: Laura finally changing tack - no longer hunting CC's chin with every right hand: blonde hanging back, trying to box more as Carpenter becomes aggressor. CC lifting jab off her hip, snapping it out to Laura's chest, then turning torso-left into quick, swiping right hands up top, followed by a lashing, hesitation left hook as CC uncoils and turns the other way. Laura rung up, but proving sturdy - she's fielding pretty good leather from a heavy handed brunette puncher. Vandervoort doing some good with her jab, trying to break down Carpenter's cutey-pie shoulder-rolling defence. LV also stepping in and snatching a lanky left hook off Carpenter's paunch as CC crouches low to receive it.

R5: Carpenter continuing to bedazzle. Laura hesitant to throw after having missed so much early: CC more or less given free rein to do what she wants. Carpenter nibbling with her jab, just using it to screen those sneaky overhand rights, mopping up hook in Laura's ribs/midsection. Charisma conserving energy, frequently putting a tummy on Laura after punching her, tying up and making Vandervoort take weight until ref's break. Frustrating times for Laura: she's absorbing methodical shellack; still can't get Charisma hurt.

R6: Laura unveils a new weapon: lashing, buggywhip right hand in over Carpenter's left hip - ideal punch with which to attack CC's over-committed closed stance. CC grimacing absorbing the blows like a trooper - but she's thrown back over to the defensive, unable to impose will. Laura able to work Carpenter over from outside - committing her to defensive bobbing with the jab, then stroking her that terrible right hand in the body. Laura aggressive - lips curling back off teeth as she snarls on delivery: she takes her first clear round in a while.

R7: Carpenter goes immediately to ropes, looking to protect her back from buggywhips by fighting off the apron. Laura stalks her foe, then engages her: blonde leaning in with healthy, strapping strokes, sweeping and lashing away as CC bobs/rolls/dips/slips and leans off the cables. All Vandervoort as she outworks CC through two minutes - mostly glancing contact, but Carpenter not throwing much back. All changes late as Carpenter rips a torrid left hook out of her crouch - surprising Laura to body - then doubles the left hand into a vicious, clipping little left uppercut to chin: VANDERVOORT GOES WOBBLY BUTT! Laura dismayed - legs spazzing out of control, eyes watering: she stumbles away as Charisma steps off the ropes, looking to finish. CC pouring in huge right hands, crowding close, then twisting to clap on close-in hooks. Laura driven ragdoll, length of the ring - she hits ropes stunned, manages to earmuff up and take a terrible beating to her waist. CC on top, strapping and cuffing away at her foe's svelte midsection - she steals the round late, beats the breath from Laura's body with a thudding assault at bell.

R8,9: Is Carpenter out of gas? Charisma inexplicably going back into her closed-stance shell - not pressing the action - weight on her back (right) foot as she looks to slip and counter. Laura's young legs recovering well from that rough 7th: she's regrouping in wide stance, pulsing the jab onto CC to keep her occupied, then lashing merciless buggywhip right hands to the hip/back. Carpenter grimacing at the touch - answers by easing herself back into ropes: Laura smartly engages with a long, pesky jab to CC's belly, then steps out of range, forcing Carpenter to come forward. Vandervoort also featuring a snappy, biting left hook: she'll dip-n'-rip this thing to paunch or breasts, really gouging at Carpenter - then Laura pivots-left minimizing CC's chance to counter. Young blonde takes 8th and 9th by healthy margins as older brunette saves up for the 10th.

R10: All Carpenter. She ducks down, walks Laura into a clinch, then bodies Vandervoort to ropes, smothering her. Total change of tactics from CC as she becomes a brawny pressure fighting, brawling off Laura's chest in sweaty close quarters. Vandervoort grimacing - pushing against CC's curvy body, trying to ease her off for left uppercuts or slinging right hands - but CC's got good position. Carpenter keeping her body on, smearing Vandervoort against ropes - frequently holding and hitting despite ref's warnings. Midway through, Carpenter rips a savage left hook to Laura's waist, then doubles it into the left uppercut: Vandervoort momentarily out, droops forward with hands down, allowing CC to mercilessly whack away right hands to exposed ribs. Vandervoort able to tie up while hurt, avoiding the knockdown: she's well and truly beaten however, as CC keeps squirming her hands free to do damage. CC salts away the 10th, takes a close decision 6 rounds to 4.

After: So close: Laura measures herself against Charisma, comes up just short - but its one to grow on for the still-evolving blonde beauty. "You know, she tried to play chess with me, which I give her credit for," a gracious Carpenter allows in postfight. "She recognized she couldn't just pour into my chin like she wanted to, so she adjusted - that's what good fighters do. She's not strong, but she's got that lanky, supple leverage on her shots which can smart - the girl's got some tools, no doubt about it." So what's next for Carpenter? "I think this fight shows I'm still too much for the second tier girls. I've got my eye on Ali Larter - I think that's a fight I could really do well in and maybe get myself into a title shot. I'll leave it up to my managers, but Ali needs to worry about Kaley and me both!"
