Kate Mara
(37 / 5’2” / 3:9 FCBA / Free Agent)

Results: Lookout! / Story: The Comediennes

Pre-fight:

“Well I’ve worked with Kate before in a professional sense,” says Rachel. “So I know her a bit. I know she’s struggled. That said she has two pretty solid wins in K-Bell and Mila Kunis last year, so maybe she’s turning a corner. I know she’s got a pretty decent guard, so it’ll be a challenge to get through that. Still, I like my chances if I can find a rhythm.”

“Rachel is a sweetheart,” says Kate. “That said she’s still super fresh in the league and I think that’s where she’s found her success. She doesn’t have a lot of tape on her. So it’ll be down to if I can figure her out or not. I’ve seen some vulnerabilities there. Re-watching that Tisdale fight and she was almost finished. I think you have to question her toughness, honestly.”

R1:

The two fighters meet in the middle of the ring and throw some testy jabs. Kate’s defense holds pretty strong against the quick hands of Brosnahan. Rahcel with a little more agility and mobility as she tries to skirt around Kate to find a hole in the defense.

Mara holds up though. Not nearly as aggressive as Rachel, but she does a nice job stuffing her from getting anything significant. With time ticking down in the round, Kate opens herself up a little to try to land a combo. Rachel dodges and with her quick hands fires off a right-left combo followed with an uppercut to the chin. Very fast hands are the difference maker in the round as the bell rings.

10-9 Brosnahan.

R2:

Round two opens similarly, but Rachel gets the better ring position as she comes out of her corner quicker. She looks just a shade too fast for Mara right now as Rachel smartly begins to just bang at the guard instead of trying to find holes in it. It’s enough to get Kate dangerously close to her corner. Rachel comes barreling in, hoping she can overwhelm Kate with a sheer force of punches.

Kate finds some success though with a right handed counterpunch and escapes the corner. Now with the entire ring behind her, it’s Kate who has flipped ring position. Rachel’s punches come fast, but Kate gets a right into the ribs. Brosnahan winces and now Kate has an opportunity. She throws a few combos and dodges Rachel’s counters. Kate realizing Rachel’s guard isn’t all that impressive as she actually lands more punches that round.

At the end of round two it’s 19-19.

R3:

Kate clearly is not impressed with Rachel so far as she comes right at her to start round three. She stuffs Rachel’s first few jabs and then slams a right hook into her cheek. Kate smells blood in the water. She dodges a few desperate punches from Brosnahan and then works some wicket combos.

Left-right, right uppercut. Dodge a hook. Left, left, left… pounding away at Rachel’s face. Kate brings back her fist and shellacs Rachel with a right cross. Brosnahan drops to the canvas as Kate smirks on her way back to the corner.

Rachel forces her way back to her feet as the ref reaches five and assures him she’s ready to continue.

Kate’s confidence at an all time high as she comes in to finish her opponent. But she presses a little too much and seems to forget that Rachel can make her pay in a hurry. Brosnahan finds a right-left combo and then begins working uppercuts to Kate’s body as the bell rings.

Kate walks to her corner feeling like she squandered a golden opportunity.

Mara leads 29-27.

R4:

It’s clear that Kate is not expecting the all-out blitz that comes her way. Rachel is clearly feeling desperate, but the thing about desperation is when it’s mixed with talent it can be dangerous. Like a wounded animal snapping, Rachel’s fists fly with reckless abandon. Kate’s solid guard be dammed, she gets absolutely shredded as Rachel just doesn’t stop punching.

Rachel sets Kate up with a few jabs and then goes low to the ribs. Kate clutches her side and falls down to her knees. Mouth hanging open as Rachel clearly socked the wind right out of her.

Kate shakes her head and pushes herself up before the ref can reach six. Panting heavily, she affirms she’s ready to continue.

The rest of the round lacks the fireworks, but Kate regains some footing. Rachel loses her desperation as she’s tied things up and is content to let the round fizzle out.

End of round four, we’re tied 37-37.

R5:

The fighters have traded knockdowns so far and after some slight jabs back and forth another one comes two minutes into round five. Rachel hits a beautiful left hook to the cheek, opened up by equally impressive work to the body beforehand. Rachel has clearly found her rhythm and she watches as her opponent crawls over to the ropes.

Kate pulls herself up at seven.

Rachel comes in to try to finish her off. She throws a lot at Kate. Rachel is trying to find that hole in the guard again and taking unique angles to try to do it. Kate stays tough though even as she’s battered into the ropes. Time ticking out of the round and Rachel can’t quite find a crack in the armor.

That doesn’t stop Kate from finding one in Rachel’s. She pivots and finds a right-handed uppercut to Rachel’s chin. Brosnahan is hurt! Time is ticking but Kate might just have enough time if she can press forward. Rachel with a desperation right that Kate side-steps. A quick and brutal one-two to the face. Brosnahan now against the ropes. Kate firing off against her wounded opponent. A left to the ribs is enough to clear a path for a right hook that snaps Rachel’s head to the side!

Brosnahan goes down stiff as a board. Kate roars and raises her hands above her head, backing up towards a corner.

Rachel’s cheek looks like it’s glued to the canvas. Drool dribbles from her lips as her eyes are closed. Slowly her arms begin to move as the ref counts over her. She plants her gloves in the canvas and begins to push herself up with trembling limbs. It’s not clear if she even knows where the count is as she finally stands up. The ref gets to nine and asks if Rachel can continue.

She nods. The fight is back on, but before they can re-engage the bell rings.

With such an even round we go into round six with a 47-47 score.

R6:

Kate can feel it. She just needs to break Rachel’s will. Rachel looks worn-down and is breathing heavily. Kate looks beaten up, but in slightly better shape than Brosnahan.

The two girls meet in the middle of the ring and Kate takes the advantage. Rachel keeps her guard up and tries to hang on for as long as she can. Kate’s offensive abilities aren’t overly impressive, but her tough defense might be why she has a shot at a KO right now. Rachel is able to avoid a corner though and keep herself with a puncher’s chance.

Working back to the middle of the ring, the fighters re-engage again. Once more Kate is able to start working Rachel back. There’s some desperation in Rachel’s eyes and overwhelming confidence in Kate’s. But once more before Kate can punch Rachel into a corner, Brosnahan slips away and lands a quick combo.

Rachel’s wiliness has afforded her a chance to get back to the middle of the ring once again. Unsure if she can do it again, she tries to find something to break through Kate’s guard. Will a left uppercut do it? It will.

It’s a wonderfully executed punch that breaks Kate’s guard. Rachel sees life! She comes in. Her wickedly blazing fists mark Kate up and down. Those combos so tough to defend. Rachel overwhelms her not with power, but with so many connecting punches. It’s a wonder Kate stays up for as long as she can. One more left-right straight to the face and Kate falls back into the ropes and down to the canvas.

Her hands draped over the bottom rope, Kate tries to make her way up as the ref begins the count. As she goes to stand her legs give out from under her and she falls back down onto her ass. The count reaches 10.

Winner via KO in Round 6: Rachel Brosnahan

Post-Fight:

“Did you all enjoy the New Year’s fireworks?” asks Rachel with a smile. “Wow! That was super intense. I thought for sure she had me in round five. But I figured if I didn’t get up Alyssa was going to kick my ass, so I figured I should get up! In all seriousness though, she’s so competitive. Dynamite guard. Quicker fists than you’d think. I don’t know… I guess I was just a tad bit… tougher.”

“Well I guess that toughness comment aged like milk,” says Kate. “I got her down twice and almost got her in that sixth round. She just kept coming at me. Really hats off to her. I didn’t think she could bounce back from that. I did end up figuring her out at least on her defense, but I guess she just had a stronger resolve to keep going. Her offensive skillset is really a handful to deal with, though. I’m not sure how many girls have quicker fists than that.”
