Before: Weigh-in 2 days before cute Julie Benz is about to step into the squared circle for her second Academy bout, this time to face one of the hottest, most confident (and need we say 'broad shouldered'?) brunettes in the bantam ranks! Benz came late to the FCBA show, but after stumbling in her '08 debut (losing 4 straight decisions is 'stumbling', no?) she's won her last 4 fights by KO (Camilla DeCesare, Kelli Williams, Olivia Wilde and Kate Hudson!) Described as "a young 38" the future has to be NOW for Benz who has a reputation as a brawler in apartment wrestling.
Greene's 4-4 record same as Julie's, but the competition has been higher quality (Jewel, Pressly, Taylor Swift, Beckinsale, Garth, Cuthbert, Munn and Christensen!) Troubling about Greene is none of her fights have gone the distance with both her wins/losses ending in stoppages. Her conditioning could be questioned for this fight! Benz, despite her age, is known as a gym rat and her physical conditioning is beyond questioning but Greene's biggest advantage is the 15 year age difference! It's rare, even in the FCBA, to see one that big for a fight.
"I just don't see how someone with my resume can hope to compete against that young brunette," Benz admits sheepishly in prefight. "I'm not coming in expecting to win, I just want to get a few good rounds under my belt; position myself for bigger things this fall. We don't expect a bantam title; I'm just here to promote my latest film, 'Answers to Nothing' with Liz Mitchell and Dane Cook. You can also catch me in 'Rambo' on Spike TV and 'Punisher' on premium cable. Is this a cynical marketing move on my part? Sure. I'm helping The Academy fill a void at bantam until someone better comes along, let's not kid ourselves."
Ashley standing behind Julie taking it all in. Blonde doesn't see Ash put a finger in her mouth and pretend to gag at the 'humble act' but the media does and when the video appears on TMZ that evening, faces are red at the FCBA. "Julie's a trouper," Ashley smiles. "I hope when I'm her age I can just get to the ring without a walker. As for who's kidding who? I'm better than Benz in every way...every day!"
Julie, standing to one side, leans around to check Ashley's frontage, then cups her own boobs, hefts them and shakes her head 'no.' Again, footage is Internet ready that evening - bringing both women some embarrassing moments...but nicely setting up a fight which otherwise might have done a lackluster box office but now is so hot it gets live TV. Well done ladies!
Ashley Greene: green sport-bra; cheerleader spankies; white shoes/socks rolled down; hair a messy ponytail. Julie Benz: white VS lace bra and boy-cut panties; thigh-hi stockings; bare feet. White gloves for both.
During R1: Benz the thicker, stronger looking, woman; but also showing her boxer credentials. Footwork? What you'd expect from a world class figure skater. Julie leaning in behind the jab; putting her shoulder on Ashley, turning her. Benz mixing it up well; digging into Greene's nubile young body; coming over the top, headhunting when it's available. Greene slow to get off in receipt, missing often as Benz' strong legs allow her to mount hit/run attacks; lathering up Greene's plush torso, then scooting away before Ashley can return fire. GREENE'S STUNNED! Julie rings Ashley up with a swatting right to the body; doubling it with a smart uppercut that leaves Ashley stepping in fencepost holes at the bell. Solid, if unspectacular, round to the veteran blonde Julie Benz.
R2: Benz boxing. Julie working steady behind a good, solid, left jab; easing inside; steering Ashley around using her shoulder. It's Benz who's initiating all the action; Ashley either unwilling or unable to get out front and take the lead in their pas de deux. Benz using her bulkier body; forcing her way inside to hup-hup-hup underneath; constantly changing angles, levels, direction on Greene who, as soon as she thinks she's got Benz figured out is being hit from another angle. It's all very veteran stuff; Benz showing her greater experience. Greene, only able to answer in short spurts - and then infrequently - but when she can, she pays diligent attention to the older woman's body with some spanking punching putting miles on it that she can cash in later. Benz, however, builds her lead thru two.
R3: Benz the smarter fighter so far; methodical, more skilled, dogged in pursuit, keeping Ashley backing up, off balance. Ashley getting touched, roughed up, but when she answers she brings it heavy; keeping her laser-like focus on Benz' aging torso, looking to take her superior legs out of the equation for later rounds. Benz not afraid to work the younger woman's jugs - and Ashley's not bashful about answering in kind. Two or three times, they tangle in tight; both chugging up under the others breastworks. It's not pretty or graceful, but it's breathtaking in so many ways - and the crowd loves it!
R4: Ashley starting to get her jab into the fight and finds things get easier for her. Behind the jab, Ashley gets to Julie's ribs time and again and digging into Benz' belly brings beaucoup benefits! Julie finds she can't have her own way this round, getting her butt backed up steadily for the first time in the fight. Time and again, bashing close-contact trades start to go Ashley Greene's way!
R5: Greene means go! Second verse, same as the first. Ashley Greene's got her game working and she's not about to fix what ain't broke! Forcing Julie to fight her toe-to-toe, Ashley ups the tempo and life is beautiful. Inside exchanges favor Benz for power; Greene for frequency. For every solid punch Benz lands, Greene lands two! The youngster is starting to assume command as Julie Benz is no longer able to dictate the pace of this fight. Ashley steadily outworking and outpunching the older blonde.
R6: Ashley in complete control. Green walking Benz down, punishing her body at center ring; driving her to the ropes; punishing her body on the ropes. Benz visibly distressed; face flushed; she's obviously rattled by the change of momentum. Benz no longer the stronger woman; Greene's taken that role and is running with it as she wins her third straight round to draw even on the scorecards after six stanzas!

R7: Cue crafty vet comeback! Benz listens to Bell's advice, jumps out southpaw this round; circling counter clockwise; stamping in with straight lefts up the middle; pivoting right around behind pesky right hooks to Greene's leftside ribs. Young and inexperienced, Ashley completely bamboozled by the wily change of look. Julie works behind the right jab, left hook combination the entire round and while Greene isn't seriously damaged, she doesn't mount much in the way of an offense and falls behind on the scorecards again as Benz puts up a two digit number.
R8: Cue brunette comeback! Ashley strong up the middle; using her body to push, shove, bull rush, Julie back to the ropes where Ashley sets up shop in Julie's Vic's Secret lace panties, punishing her body. Benz showing a veteran's cool in the pocket; strong defensive posture, gloves up, elbows in; blocking with forearms, elbows, shoulders, gloves; head constantly in motion, ducking, bobbing and weaving; but she's not getting off the ropes and she's being outworked and soundly beaten about the head, shoulders, flanks, hips...and Ashley breaks out her uppercut, harassing, harming and finally humbling Julie's proud blonde jugs this round! Benz doing enough - barely - to keep the round close; sneaking in the odd hook to the liver, overhand to the head or inside uppercut to Ashley's young jugs to keep it close.
R9: Now that Ashley's figured it out, Julie switchesback from southpaw to her orthodox stance. Julie re-establishing her jab; pumping it stiff to Ashley's face which is taking on a ruddy flush by mid-round. Benz' back-stepping, opening gaps and as Ashley storms forward to fill them, Julie potshots her with lead right hands high, and snarky, waspish, left hooks to Greene's paunch. Julie, always pivoting one way or the other after punching, never giving Ashley the same look twice in a row. Ashley being frustrated; ups her work rate and Julie masterfully countering as she walks the bamboozled beauty Ashley into rolling barrages time and time again. Julie drawing ahead after nine by the slenderest of margins.
R10: Fight hangs in the balance. Julie's ahead by a single point, so Greene can gain a draw winning the tenth or even pull out a miracle victory if she wins by a substantial margin. Both fighters jabbing, Benz' straight left spearing; Greene's jab snicking out like a switchblade. Julie's right just grazes Greene's chin; they exchange jabs; then Benz' wicked right cross catches Ashley flush on the chin. GREENE GOES DOWN! Ashley dropped to her knees, jumps up at 'three' as if she had just slipped, but the referee continues with a mandatory eight as Benz waits in a neutral corner. Greene appear to be recovered but Benz, in her eagerness to make sure comes straight at Ashley with an ineffectual jab, followed by a straight right. Greene times it beautifully and slips the punch; then hurts Benz, fitting a hard left hook in under her right. BENZ IS STUNNED! Ashley immediately launches another lightening bolt right cross that drops Benz on her cute butt. The blonde is hurt; eyes glazed but she gets the advantage of a mandatory eight count - just enough time for her recouperative powers to work their magic. As Greene wades in for the kill, Benz reaches down deep inside her; her quick hands flash a right-left combination and...GREENE GOES DOWN! Ashley took both punches in the face and went down in a heap! Crowd erupting as Ash staggers to her feet, swaying through another eight count, then puts up her dukes...but she's a wreck! Benz cautiously boxing the shattered Greene to the bell, running out the clock. The result? A foregone conclusion after a scintellating 10 round: UD10 Julie Benz; she gets the round, and the fight, in a savvy, veteran, fashion after heart-stopping excitement late!
After: Ashley understandably down after coming so close to pulling out a a huge comeback win, and just missing. "What can I say?" she asked rhetorically. "We both knew going into the tenth I needed a big round but Julie made sure that didn't happen. I was probably taking more chances than I should've and she caught me clean. I could have played it safe and lost a close decision, but I don't go into fights looking to 'lose close' - I want to win. Benz doesn't have much of an FCBA resume, but she's boxed plenty - we all know figure skaters are tough. My problem - we couldn't get any video of her and it took a few rounds to feel her out - then she went southpaw and it confused the hell outta me. She's a smart gal, give her that; but I'm better. I'd beat her 7 or 8 times out of 10. Unfortunately, tonight wasn't one of them...so, we move on!"
Julie wipes imaginary perspiration off her brow as she steps grinning to the microphone; the gesture acknowledging the narrowness of her one point victory. "A lot of what happened tonight I owe to Dana Delany. She was really great on the 'Desperate Housewives' set. Dana has tons of experience and when I told her I wanted to try FCBA, she spent three weeks after shooting and rehearsals; working on technique and helping me understand boxing strategy. I asked her to be my trainer, but she was too busy with a new show and suggested I call Cat Bell. Apparently, Cat and Dana had a relationship way back when. Cat talked to Ginny who was willing to take me on. I've got a ways to go, but I'm tough mentally and physically and I can get the job done, in the ring and in the gym."
