Tahnee Atkinson versus Jennifer Lawrence

(Words: O & E / Results: Lookout!)

Before: : "Good against Decker doesn't necessarily equip Jennifer to fight me," Tahnee shrugs in answer to questions concerning Jenny's giant-killer status. "In fact, a lot of what she did well against Brook will get her hurt against me.”

“I've got a lot of options against this girl - maybe I'll move in and dig to her body - maybe I'll hang back and pick her apart - maybe I'll just get all right-hand happy on her ass. Anything I want to do will work, I just have to focus on one plan and execute." Jennifer anxious to get at Tahnee - been a long hard road to the top. "Conquering Decker was a tremendous lift," Lawrence says at the podium, "but while Tahnee is still strutting about, spouting her nonsense, there's work left to be done. With Kostek jostling Righetti, there's a tremendous opportunity for me to move up. We've all noticed how shaky Tahnee & Hannah looked after that war on New Year’s Day: my right hand is just the thing to discourage a girl who doesn't have her best legs underneath her."

R1: Jennifer very professional early--working behind the jab, gauging her foe’s reflexes, stepping around and taking a look. Sets up a scorching overhand right that unhinges Tahnee’s knees--clubbing combination to the skull puts brunette wide eyed on the ropes. Lawrence hopping in all smiles--she gets hamhanded, wailing away wide to her girl’s flanks, then jerking up the middle with curling little lefts and rights hard to those mouthwatering melons. JLaw blazing away, chin up, back straight and she gets CLOCKED a sweeping right as Tahnee times a counter slinging left into unprotected blonde jaw. Atkinson not done - she approaches with the right under her chin, jabbing firm to force Lawrence ropeside, then leaning into pounding rights from the hips. Jennifer too collected to be nailed again - hands up, rotating her torso and rolling, but she can't answer back as Tahnee shells her at the ropes.

R2: Jennifer's committing to footwork - assessing legs as the best way to minimize Tahnee’s strengths. Lawrence dancing left, showing the jab tummy and eyes, feinting, then coming in - mixing in the odd lead right hand. Atkinson turning, weight on her back foot, parrying the jab up top, but taking the one in the gut: those things are energy leeches and both women know it. Tahnee occasionally pounding out a hard single jab, JLaw shying away from it, batting it away with her right hand, blonde showing a little respect, but firmly in control at the bell.

R3: Jennfier loving it to Tahnee's belly - reaching in that rigid jab, really touching up the midriff. Atkinson dropping her right to sweep the incoming jab off her tummy in the final minute, and that's what Lawrence is looking for. JLaw shows midsection, steps in and hooks chin instead, really getting her hips and shoulder in behind a tight, clocking wallop and TAHNEE SITS DOWN! Lawrence skidding on her backside, busted flush on the chops - she's shook, takes a wobbly butt 8 as Jennifer circles her right hand in the air like she's about to wind this thing up. ON COMES JLAW! Lawrence strutting-to, looking to palm up and get Atkinson out of there and TAHNEE SLUGS BACK! Atkinson making a stand, legs looking a little shaky, but she won't be cleaned up on - Lawrence forced to step out, regroup as time and again brunette fights her off. Round ends to the sight of Tahnee dug in at the ropes, glaring defiantly as Jennifer snarls back, well out of range, blonde obviously frustrated, unable to finish.

R4: Jennifer comes out to finish Tahnee, spiking her an early lead right, sliding counterclockwise and fishing for more of the same, sliding away when she wants distance, using the jab to keep her Aussie occupied and to control the space between the fighters. Midway through, Atkinson starts to jab with authority, not always landing, but Lawrence has to respect it. Jab allows Tahnne to creep into range without getting chopped up and down the stretch, she finally turns on that heavy right, clouting JLaw’s jaw with satisfying spank. Delayed reaction in Lawrence’s legs--she stomps around, then reaches in about Atkinson’s waist to try to swamp her, shake off the hurt. Not a good idea, Tahnee the current Queen of mindless slogging, just pumping away righty, tugging and twisting as fight careens around the ring. Atkinson easing Lawrence onto the ropes, loving the brutality as she steals this round.

R5: Crunching two way punching: Tahnee jabs, looks for openings, leans into the right hand, then comes back the hook as she reloads weight onto her back foot. Jennifer doing much the same thing, headhunting with the right, body-checking with the left, swaying in and out on sturdily planted legs. Girls right in front of each other, gentle clockwise rotation but basically, both girls want to stroke rhythmically at each other. Tense to watch as girls are all squared away midring, turning on big rights and robust lefts and BOTH are landing savage. Brunette legs holding firm, both girls stroking chin either hand. Crowd oohing and aahing as both women have juicy moments, but both proving hardy - good walloping shots aren't moving stubborn legs as girls stand and deliver. Fighters fall in to each other on occasion, but a moment's wrestling quickly gives way to short-arm hooking on the inside, gradually extending back to power-punching range.

R6: Tahnee jabbing with finding Jennifer in the chest and LANDING THE RIGHT CROSS! Atkinson leaning forward, driving through the chin, Lawrence surprised to be caught, then staggering - she's hurt! Tahnee patient on follow up, laying out her stubby jab to paint the target, humming home right hands over the top as JLaw stumbles to the ropes, covering up, going to the torso roll again. Atkinson remembers the look, adjusts and shoots a robust swinging hook in the flank, keeping that right hand tight to the cheek as she moves her hips through the blow. Lawrence cringing at the body shot - veteran extends to clinch and TAHNEE LIGHTS HER UP! Crisp left uppercut finds Jennifer's chin, snaps her head back - she's stupefied, leaning forward, helpless and open. Atkinson with a sliding step to the right, backhanding the jab just to measure and leaning into a SLOBBERKNOCKER right on the chin SENDING LAWRENCE TO THE CANVAS!!!

JLaw achy to her feet: she's shabby goods. Tahnee quickly upon her - pushing out the jab to make early contact, then stepping in to curl the short-hook to jug, forcing her backwards. Ropes: Lawrence mouthbreathing, haggard: crossing her arms, only hoping to ride out the round. Robust beating dished out: Atkinson in strong, wide stance - palming Jennifer's shoulders to brace her, then plowing at her jugs, shoulders, and head. It's all too much: bludgeoning, systematic punishment beats Lawrence into trembling stupor. She's slumped helplessly in the ropes, wrists crossed at her throbbing breasts as Tahnee’s fists bounce and spank off conquered blonde flesh. Ref pushes his way in, cradling a swooning Jennifer to safety: TKO6 Tahnee Atkinson in heartpounding fashion as she vaults back into the welter title picture!

After: Draining battle does both contenders proud: one of the best, hardest-punching big-women fights of recent memory. Jennifer standing up to arguably the fiercest puncher on the planet and giving as good as she got. Tahnee slugging when she wanted, doing the homework to set up her power and soften her opponent up before committing.
