BOXING AFTER DARK

Before: Exotic battle, FCBA equivalent of Leonard/Hearns—Kiana’s lanky one shot power against Janet’s flashy combinations and reflexes. Both girls can box, but it’s really a contrast of styles—Tom looking to keep Janet on the outside—Jackson needing to solve Tom’s reach, get inside and work that wafer thin midsection. Kiana in black twist tie sports halter, red high cut aerobics trunks, black shoes and gloves. Janet in yellow snake skin motif bandeau bikini, black shoes and socks.

During R1: Jackson all sinewy early, giving Kiana plenty of supple upperbody movement. Tom lifting the jab off her hip, misses over the top as Janet weaves to her right, drags her left thumb hard into the pit of Kiana’s stomach, then ROCKETS over the top with a chopping right on the cheek and TOM IS DOWN! Kiana on her back and HURT seconds into the fight, barely beats the count and Janet climbs aboard the hurt train! Jackson all business, snapping that vicious left hook in against Tom’s ribs as the wiry Hawaiian buckles forward, face pale and blank as legs struggle to keep her upright. Jackson doubling off the body gets free clouts across the teeth with her hook, swiveling Kiana’s head sideways as Tom keeps her elbows low to protect her rigid midriff. Tom fighting back instinctively, licking the odd lanky uppercut or wide left hand against Jackson, but all it’s doing is giving Miss Janet the chance to counter with pinpoint right hands. Big 10-8 round leaves Kiana swooning, stumbling to her corner when Janet’s through with her.

R2: No sign of the puncher-Kiana who began the fight—wounded beauty gets up on her toes and jangly-limbs it around a stalking Jackson—Tom snaking the jab off her waist while skipping to her left. Reach and movement is effective—Jackson unhurt, but unable to close distance as she stays responsible on defence.

R3: Jackson turning up the heat, she’s slipping Kiana’s jab and ripping her hook to Hawaiian ribs—Tom gritting her teeth in pain stops punching! Jackson taking over at close range—she’s bouncing her left hand HARD off the body, then snapping the fist back to her stomach as Tom keels forward, arms in tight. Whenever Kiana buckles forward, Jackson can double up in the hook—one to the body, one to the jaw—Kiana fielding these strokes flush and looking all touched upo through 3. Shutout Janet J.

R4: Kiana back on her toes—its different fight. Tom lumping up some, but when she boxes defensively, Janet has to come forward, take some risks, and Tom’s jab is finding a home in Jackson’s beautiful face. Once again, Janet unhurt, but unable to get her work done as Tom’s conditioning comes to her rescue.

R5: Jackson pressing, trying to dig the left in under Kiana’s right elbow. Tom stepping away, wincing from body work, trying to hook back with Janet but Jackson clearly the quicker mitted beauty. Midway through, Tom lashes forward with whippy one-twos, dropping her back foot back so she can lean away from the counter, then push forward into more pitching right hands. Janet bobbing, trying to time the Asian’s cobra lunges, just grazing Kiana’s chin with hooks in high stakes trading. AND JANET GOES OUT! Just like that—Kiana with cranking hook up underneath, then a scorching right hand down the pipe NAILS Jackson sweet on the chin—Janet collapsing straight down—knees hitting her chest, then sprawling backwards to line prone at Kiana’s feet. Sudden KO5 Kiana Tom!

After: Tom wiping out Janet’s consistent work with one lightning bolt punch—always a risk when going to Kiana’s midriff. Kiana relying heavily on her conditioning and strength simply to survive Janet’s early assault, then cashing in on her first opportunity with devastating finality. Second straight fight in which Jackson has looked good, only to be rendered inert by her opponent’s power, but the rust is gradually coming off the former champ.
