Before: Lopez entering a prohibitive favourite, but failing to make weight is forced to sweat it off with several hours of running and sauna. Long layoff for Lopez combined with rumours of a shoddy camp not thought to be a factor—Messenger a decent all around talent, but just not rugged enough to hand with Lopez, however log it lasts. Jen in green, floral print hipster bikini, bandeaux top, Melinda in sturdy black push up bra and panties.

During R1; Lopez a little bit rusty, slow to react, not cutting off the ring, an Melinda wheels and deals, showing a crisp jab, great ring generalship in luring Lopez forward, turning her at the ropes, then leading her back across the ring. Messenger getting off free  and easy, just buffing and shining Lopez with quick fisted, but non-commital combinations—until the final round. Lopez walking her girl down, crosses her arms, wads in, and takes a savage lick on her jaw from a perfectly timed messenger hook! Lopez stunned, staggers sideways to the ropes with eyes wide and staring as the bell sounds, preventing messenger from finishing. Big MM round as she prances back to her corner leaving Jennifer in shock on the ropes.

R2: Lopez with Tyson look—gloves tight in her chin, bending side to side as she staljks her blonde prey. Melinda circling, dancing, flicks the backhanded jab, fading back from a lunging Lopez right and NAILING Jennifer with a counter right hand on the teeth, Lopez wobbly butt (!) and shaking midring, Messenger steps over to her right reloads and drives in with an even harder sitting-duck right hand from Lopez’ side. Jen goes out, frozen in place for a moment then crumbling to lie face down on the canvas, Messenger going insane, leaps about her fallen foe as the ref doesn’t even bother to count. Corner men jump in as Melinda rolls Jennifer onto her back to look at that slumbering KO’d face. Savage KO2 Melinda Messenger in the upset of the year!

After: Melinda looking like a winner in The Price is Right is several minutes before she can compose enough for post fight interviews, “I’m taking out all American fighters!” Melinda screams. “Bring on Demi—I can’t wait to slab that trollop!” For Lopez, a devastating loss which sees her slip from the all around top 10, and has pundits recalling a similar wipe out against lightly regarded Geri Halliwell. Clearly, Lopez needs to train, get in shape, and take these girls seriously or risk being dismissed as another girl who never realized her vast potential.
