Laura Pausini vs. Brie Larson

Rematch from earlier this month sees Pausini still looking for her first FCBA win against top-level bantam Larson. But, while Laura might be a heavy underdog, the hard-hitting Italian is confident. "She got me last time," Laura admits. "But, I KNOW I can beat her, and that's just what I'm going to do!"

"Laura's a hard hitter," says Brie with a nod. "She's dangerous. But, I beat her once and I'll do it again."

ROUND ONE:

Pausini, to no one's surprise, aggressive early. She's forward backing up the blonde, letting the heavy leather fly. Brie willing to give ground, fight in counter. She's not interested in slugging it out with the Italian, at least not yet. Laura tossing a lot of leather and sitting down on most of it, but she's being very sound. She's getting the hands out and back, setting up punches, playing good defense. Brie's getting her some in the counter, but that's more on Larson doing good work than it is on Laura being sloppy. Brie's never hurt, but there's no question she's taking the worst of things from the beginning of the round to the end, and, when the bell finally rings, there's no question about who's getting the points, they're going to Laura and wide, as Pausini grabs the early 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Brie creating movement now. She's bouncing around the ring, jabbing, slipping, making the older woman stalk. Laura willing to do that, but the change in tactics by the blonde has changed the complexion of the fight. Now, it's Larson getting the better of things as she stops the Italian with the jab, follows on with hard right hands, then circles or bounces away before Pausini can respond. Laura remains patient, working the feet, looking to bring the blonde to battle. At times, the older brunette can do that, and, when she does, the results are similar to the first round, with the Italian landing the heavier shot at the American playing defense. Those interludes, however, are too few and far between to offset all the scoring the blonde is doing on the move. Thus, when the round ends, Brie's taken the points wide and evened things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Ladies working hard to dictate terms. American wants to keep moving, stay in open canvas where she can avoid heavy exchanges. Italian brunette wants to cut the ring, force hard trades, get heavy leather on target. Unlike in the first two rounds, this time, both fighters get some if not all of what they want. There are times when it's a war of movement, and, at those times, Brie with her jab, quick feet, and sharp right hand follows, gets the better of things. At other times, Laura's able to force set piece battles, and, in those cases, it's the heavy-hitting Italian who does the damage, forcing Brie back, making her cover up, piling up points. Result is a closely run thing. No one is able to gain all that much of an edge. But, when the bell rings, it's Laura who's done a bit more and moves back into the lead 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

More of the same. Brie on the move, Laura stalking, looking to bring the younger woman to battle for the first minute of the round. Then. BOOM! Right hand, LARSON and Pausini is HURT! Laura wobbles, nearly goes down, and Brie turns on the heat, tossing heavy leather at her reeling rival with both hands. Laura battered into the ropes, covers up, puts the body on sale. And. Larson. Is. Buying. Brie goes to work on the ribs and the tummy, hooking, digging, looking to bring the guard down. Laura tying up, but Larson stacks her, goes right back to work, even bangs a little rack in there, all in an effort to open up the Italian for work upstairs. But, Laura takes the licking and keeps the guard high, frustrating blonde attempt to end things. But, as the final seconds tick away, it's the American who's won the round wide and evened things again, this time at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Larsen taking the fight to Laura. Pausini's legs shaky, and the American taking full advantage of that. She's stepping up to the brunette, backing her up with hard shot. Laura countering here and there, but mostly taking, and what she's taking is a POUNDING from the younger woman. Brie sitting down on more and more as the round goes on, trying to get Laura out of there, but Pausini plenty sturdy, able to take a ton of heavy leather and stay on her feet. Ref's watching closely, because the Italian isn't getting much done offensively, but she is punching back in spots and she's defending herself, so he allows the proceedings to continue, while Brie proceeds to pummel Laura. Game Italian manages to stay off the ropes and ride out the round, but, when it ends, Brie has pitched a shutout and gone into the lead 48-47 at the half.

ROUND SIX:

Brie continuing to press. Laura in retreat. Italian simply not effective going backward, as her game is all about power and coming forward. Blonde knows this and is going to keep forcing the issue. Brunette's legs are coming back, but they aren't all the way there, so she's unable to hold canvas. Pausini scoring in counter here and there, but that's about all she can manage as Larson controls things, piling up the points and punishment until...BOOM! Straight right hand, BRIE and Laura is HURT! Pausini stumbles and is DROPPED WITH A RIGHT HOOK! Devastating punch from the blonde sends the Italian crashing to her right side. Brie quickly to a neutral corner as the ref counts down on the dazed brunette. Laura gets to shoulder and haunch, trying desperately to rise, but she's still there when the count passes her by. It's OVER! And your winner by KO6 is Brie Larson!

AFTER:

Brie matter-of-fact in the post-fight. "Like I said," the blonde says with a smile, "She's dangerous. She can hit. But, I'm better than she is. I've proved it twice. In one month."
