MELISSA BENOIST VS KATIE MCGRATH

Results: Lookout Writing: Archer

Katie: 35 YO, 5’5 ½ (1.66 m), FCBA: 0-1-0 since 2016. Foxfire Atlantic Boxing

Melissa: 30 YO, 5’8 (1.73 m), 7-6-0, 7 KO since 2015, Pretty Little Punchers

Before: Fans of THE CW series SUPERGIRL have long been eager to see Melissa Benoist (Kara/Supergirl) in the boxing ring vs. Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor). Now that match has been made both fighters seem eager to have at each other. Reports say they have been engaged in a lot of backstage sparring with neither able to dominate. Naturally, they are looking forward to chance to prove just who is the superior in a true bout.

Katie McGrath takes the podium first: “I’ve been doing well in the UK under Foxfire Atlantic management. I am 4-1 over there. Now I am back in the FCBA for the first time since I lost to Daisy Ridley in 2016. I will readily acknowledge that I am the underdog here. Melissa is younger, more experienced (relatively speaking) and she’ll have the PLP fan base on her side. Of course, I do have some fans of my own thanks to ‘Supergirl’, but I know the way to make more fans is to win. I am very well motivated to pull off at upset.”

Melissa is next up: “I have heard how well Katie’s done overseas. So I know I won’t be fighting some ‘One Fight Rookie’. I feel the pressure is actually on me. I expected to be able to beat Katie easily and if I don’t—if I lose—it’s going to look worse for me than it would be for her in losing to me. So I don’t want to be the ‘Favorite Who Got Upset’. I need to win this fight and that’s plenty of motivation for me.”

Foxfire Atlantic trainer Sophia Myles has made the journey to the FCBA Arena with Katie. The Irish-born boxer is in a shiny green two piece golden gloves and boots. Katie’s dark hair is pulled back in a ponytail.

Melissa comes to the ring with PLP trainer Nia Peeples. She is a smiiar two piece: red bottoms with gold trim and a blue sports bra top with gold trim. Blue gloves and boots with gold lacings. Melissa has her blonde hair pulled back into a pigtail.

The ring instructions proceeds smoothly. Then a quick tap of the gloves. Melissa and Katie go to their corners. The bell rings.

R1: Intense action right from the start. Katie and Melissa swift from their corners and go at each other at point-blank range. Pounding punches hit struggling bodies hard as ribs, breasts and bellies feel the hard-driven leather from two determined opponents. Katie really hooking Melissa hard in the abs and breasts. Melissa scowling, strikes back vengefully at Katie’s breasts, which has Katie glaring at the blonde, though not stopping her own punching. The two then shift to chin rattling quick uppercuts that send shivers through the straining bodies, but quickly pass and the mutual shelling continues. They go at it with growing intensity, neither giving way, until the bell rings. They don’t stop! Referee has to jump in to stop the battle. Melissa and Katie step back, breathing hard and exchanging fierce looks. Then they turn away and head for their corners. Round is ruled a DRAW!

R2: Melissa trying something different this round. She bobs and weaves as she comes at Katie. Katie looking uncertain. Then Melissa brings a stabbing right that catches Katie flush in the right eye. Katie staggers back and Melissa quickly follows up with rights and lefts to the jaw. Katie in full retreat, covering up and trying to protect herself with the jab. Melissa working Katie to the ribs as she tries to escape the relentless attack. Katie finally able to stabilize her defenses and force Melissa to circle and look for openings. Katie shifting with her gets popped to the body and head with regularity, but manages to stay on her feet to the bell. Round goes wide to Melissa Benoist.

R3: Katie responds to the Melissa’s offensive in R2 by being first to cross the ring and drive her glove into Melissa belly. Melissa doubles up with a gurgling gasp and Katie clips her on the chin. Melissa lurching backwards as Katie adds a left to the jaw to add to the blonde’s distress. Katie then hooks to the body trying to get Melissa onto the ropes. Melissa rallies under pressure. She gets her jab going and scores another right to Katie’s right eye. The area around the right eye is red and swollen so the second shot sends a tremor through Katie’s body. Katie momentarily frozen from the pain around her eye and this allows Melissa to counterattack. Melissa driving Katie back with a hammering attack to Katie’s midsection, Katie now the one falling back, but then she rallies with a smashing right to the cheekbone that knocks Melissa to one side. Melissa turns back and gets into a toe to toe battle to the body with Katie down to the bell. Referee quick step between them. Katie now has a rapidly swelling area around her right eye. Melissa sports an ugly swelling bruise on her right cheekbone. Sweat soaking their aching bodies as they move slowly to their corners. Judges decide this one was a DRAW as well.

R4: Katie comes out hard and fast this round. She catches Melissa on the left temple with a flinging left and Melissa goes wobbly-legged. Katie swatting rights and lefts into Melissa’s face until the shell-shocked blonde buries her lumped up face into her gloves. Katie then goes to the body, driving Melissa into the ropes with hammering hooks to the belly and ribcage. Melissa pinned against the strands and now Katie goes for the blonde’s juggs with smashing straight rights and lefts that have Melissa writhing under the blazing impacts. Melissa seated on the ropes just trying to survive as Katie works her like the heavy bag in her gym. Bell finally sounds. Katie steps back and wipes her sweaty brow with her forearm with studying Melissa with a look of irritation mixed with admiration that the bombed blonde is somehow able to leave the ropes and totter off to her corner. Katie shakes her head and heads for her own corner. Round goes to Katie McGrath in a shutout.

R5: Melissa given the best repair work Nia Peeples and the PLP corner can give her. She comes out slowly for the new round and engages Katie as soon as the FAB fighter comes within range. Katie wary of Melissa initials punches to the body. She circles and makes little rushes to fire quick flurries into the blonde’s torso. Melissa countering, but it is sluggish and not well-aimed. Katie seems to grow bolder, she moves in and stays there hook Melissa in the stomach, Melissa jabbing back, but she’s not getting good power into these counters. Then Katie steps back and Melissa seems to stumble forward and her high guard drops. BANG! Katie blasts Melissa to the chin AND DOWN GOES MELISSA!. Melissa’s head snapping back from the uppercut to the chin and suddenly her whole body is limp. Melissa crashes onto her back, she bounces and then comes to a halt on her back, arms over her head and her eyes open but unfocused. Katie eagerly heads for the neutral corner. Melissa struggling to push herself up as the referee counts. Melissa able to first sit up and then get to her knees, Finally, she forces herself to her feet to break the count at “NINE!”. Referee checks Melissa over then waves Katie back in, Katie wastes little time in getting back at Melissa. Melissa protecting her head with her gloves and trying to jab Katie back. Katie trying to press but can’t land the kind of takedown punches she needs. Round ends with Melissa on her feet, but badly lumped up and moving with pain. Katie looking confident she’s on the verge of realizing her upset dream as the knockdown assures her winning the round wide.

R6: More hard work by the PLP corner crew as Melissa sits on her stool with a stunned look on her face. Nia Peeples telling her fighter: “This is not over! You can still beat this woman! You need to hurt her and make her bells ring!” Melissa smiles ruefully: “If her bells ring as much as mind I’ll turn this fight around” “That’s my Supergirl,” Nia says.

Meanwhile Sophia Myles is telling Katie: “You are wearing her down, but you need to finish her. Don’t let her recover! You can do this! She’s not that Super!” Katie smiles: “You got that right! Supergirl is going down hard—and I’ll be the one doing it!”

Both fighters seen pounding their gloves together in anticipation just before the bell rings. They bound to their feet and start at each other, You want a knockdown? Fastest way to get one of those is with a head shot. Melissa and Katie open up with fierce exchange of rights and lefts to the noggin and both hit home with power. The result of which is to stagger them both, but they recover and go for each other’s chin with the next blast. BIFF! BANG! POW! SMACK! Chins are knocked back and then jaws are bashed to swivel heads. Katie’s ponytail and Melissa’s pigtail being bounced and slapped around. Two fighters legs are a shakin’, but they don’t give way and they lunge for each other again. This time, however, Melissa stuffs a hard, grinding hook into Katie’s belly and the brunette doubles with a shock written all over her face. Melissa then goes to the jaw with rights and lefts. Katie reeling, stumbles back against the ropes, but before Melissa can pin her, she driven a straight right into Melissa’s nose. Melissa shudders as crimson spurts from the nose. Katie tries to shove her way clear, but Melissa punches her back with a right to the eye and how it is Katie writhing in pain. Melissa trying to bring hooks to the belly while keeping Katie against the ropes. Katie recovering from the eye shot, now hooks Melissa back to the belly and the two end up clinching as they struggle, Referee separates them but they go right back at it as Katie slides along the ropes. Melissa can’t quite pin the brunette and she is taking heavy counter shelling, but she continues to punch Katie to the body. Round ends and once more referee has to force the two apart. Very intense round as the crowd on its collective feet cheering them both as they make their way to their corners. Judges total the points and Melissa Benoist proves to be a narrow winner.

R8: “This fight can go either way!” Nia Peeples is telling Melissa during the break. “You are hurting her, Just keep it up and she’ll break down!” Melissa nods grimly. “Breaking her down: that’s my mission!”

Meanwhile Sophie Myles says: “She’s trying to comeback! You crush that comeback and she’ll fold! Dominate her! Take her down!” Katie smiles wickedly: “One ‘Supergirl’ coming down and out!”

Bell rings! Out they come! Katie going for the head and manages to bounce a right off Melissa;s head as she tries to duck under. Melissa coming back with a right to the gut and then plants a left right beside it. Katie’s upper body thrust forward and Melissa ready with a right to the chin, Katie rocked back on heels. Melissa trying to get at her jaw, but Katie stuns her with a left to the chin. Melissa now on her heels, but comes back as Katie is charging in. The two fling blockbuster rights: Katie’s slams into Melissa’s forehead knocking her back, while Melissa’s connects with the point of Katie’s chin. Katie’s momentum carries her into Melissa who is trying to recover from the shot to her forehead. Melissa instinctively catching Katie and then realizes the brunette has gone limp. Melissa jumps back as Katie’s face slides down her front and ends up at the tips of her boots. Melissa stares down in surprise as she realizes Katie is down, but then heads for neutral corner. Referee moving in. Katie struggling to rise.

“GET UP! GET UP!” Sophia Myles’ desperate pleas can be heard by nearby ringsiders.

Katie pushes herself up but then her arms buckle and she is back down with her cheek against the canvas as her mouth breaths wetly.

“EIGHT!....NINE!...TEN!....YOU ARE OUT!”

THE WINNER MELISSA BENOIST DEFEATS KATIE MCGRATH KO7!

After:

“What a fight!” an exhausted Melissa Benoist tells press. “I knew Katie was good from all our sparring, but she is tough and she hits like a brick. I consider myself fortunate to have beaten her. I hope there are no hard feelings. It got very intense while we were going at it but that’s the way boxing should be.”

Katie McGrath sporting a glorious shiner around her right eye says: “Naturally I am disappointed I lost, but Melissa is a terrific fighter. I may not have won, but I am proud of how well I fought tonight. There certainly is no ill-will on my part towards Melissa.”

The two battered fighters are then photographed hugging and the night ends on a positive note.

Observers very impressed with Katie McGrath. She was taking on a younger fighter with more experience and came very close to pulling off the upset. Still, Melissa Benoist did rise to what was probably more of a challenge than she had expected and win the bout. Thrilling fight for the fans. Hopefully we’ll be seeing Katie McGrath in an FCBA ring again soon. A lot of older bantams out there might want to give her a try. Meanwhile, Melissa Benoist can hope to resume climbing the Bantams Contenders Ladder once more.
