Hailee Steinfeld vs. Danielle Panabaker

BEFORE:

Pair of brunettes who probably shouldn't be sporting the losing records they are currently sitting on. Panabaker, who made her debut at flyweight (in a loss to Kristen Stewart), is a solid bantam with power. But, lack of management through most of the prime of her career has left her with only seven fights and three wins. And, tonight, she's stepping up to a girl who walks around welter and fights at light, Hailee Steinfeld. The younger brunette's problem isn't lack of management. She's had that since just after her debut. It's the inability to put together consistently good performances. But, maybe that's turning around, as Hailee's on a three-fight winning streak. But, she's still 6-10 career. But, losing records or no, both brunettes are confident coming into this one.

"Hailee's a little taller, a little heavier," Danielle admits. "But, that won't matter. Because I'm a LOT better."

"She's not going to hang in with me," Steinfeld says with a smile. "Sooner or later, my power will get her."

ROUND ONE:

Hailee aggressive early, looking to walk Dani Pani down behind that jab, but Danielle not cooperating. Panabaker angling, staying off square, getting to spots and getting off in combination, stinging the younger woman with hard shot. Steinfeld not cowed by any of that. She's still trying to force the issue, and that's playing right into the older woman's hands. Panabaker slipping, countering, then dipping inside for quick head-body-head flurries. By late in the round, Hailee is ALL out of sorts. She can't get the jab on, can't get the geometry right, can't get anything done. Instead, Panabaker keeps piling up the points and hurt, even backing up the bigger girl with a couple of hard flurries in the final seconds. At the bell, there's no doubt about it. Panabaker's won it wide to take the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Hailee finds that less is more in the second. After hearing it from her corner between rounds, she dials back the aggression some. Instead of pressing forward, she's willing to box at range...and it makes a difference. She's working the left to find Panabaker, then dropping rights off it. Danielle's now having to work to get to spots instead of being gifted opportunities by an overly aggressive opponent. Result is good, two-way stuff. Both brunettes have their moments, and no one is able to get control of things. Panabaker's probably got a small lead most of the way, but, late in the round, Steinfeld lands some hard right hands that back the smaller woman up. Once she gets Panabaker going backward, Hailee keeps her on the back foot and pulls in front for a narrow win in the second that ties things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

More of the same. Steinfeld wants to fight at range, and, while she has a little reach on Dani Pani, it's not enough to trouble Panabaker over much. Instead, the older brunette is able to angle to spots and get off in combination. Things settle into boxing, and both fighters show they're plenty good at it...and, again, make people wonder how they're a combined five fights under .500 with the talent that's on display as the round goes on. Back and forth they go, first Dani getting off lusty, even forcing Hailee to cover up a couple of times, then Steinfeld responding, dropping heavy right hands on the lighter woman. There's no much in it the entire way, and, when the bell finally rings, it's cat's whisker stuff, but it's Panabaker who's taken the points and pulled back into the lead 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Fourth verse, same as the third. Ranged boxing and both fighters getting some work in. Panabaker moving very well, head, hands, feet. Angling to spots to get off in combination. Hailee trying to find, square up. When she can, she's able to land solid flurries, backing up Danielle at times. But, despite all the effort and good work of the two competitors, again, there's not much in it. Nobody can grab control of this thing. Instead, it's two-way, back-and-forth stuff on the narrowest margins throughout...and both fighters know how close it is...because both try to turn on the jets late and steal the points, creating some of the best action of the fight. Both brunettes land some hard shot, but no one is able to impose will, and, at the bell, it's the closest round yet, this one going to Hailee, who evens things yet again, this time at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Brunettes working at range. A bit more aggression from Hailee at times...but only a bit, as she remains mindful of what happened in the first. For Dani Pani's part, she's moving well, getting off in combination, scoring with both hands. And, for the fourth straight round, there's not much in it. Until, there is. BOOM! Right hand, HAILEE and Panabaker is HURT! Dani wobbles and then gets absolutely CLOCKED with a right hook and DOWN GOES PANABAKER! Dani splashing to her left side as Steinfeld throws her hands over her head in celebration and hurries to a neutral corner. There she watches as the referee counts down on her stricken opponent. There's no movement at all from the prostrate Panabaker, who remains down and out well past the count of ten. It's OVER. And your winner by KO5 is Hailee Steinfeld!

AFTER:

Hailee looking a little relieved in the post. She may not have expected as much from Panabaker as she got, but she found a way forward and got a nice win. "I told you," she said with a smile. "My power was going to come into play here. That's what people forget about me. They all know I'm athletic, but I can hit with any light in the FCBA. ANY light."
