Missy Peregrym vs. Adriana Lima

BEFORE:

Two of the top veteran lights in the FCBA squaring off in this one...amazingly enough, for the first time. And, with both fighters in fine form and sitting, as usual, in the title picture, there's plenty of significance happening. And, Missy makes no pretense about not realizing it. "It's a big one, of course," says the Hall of Famer. "We've never fought before, and we both want to prove who's better. And, just as importantly, use the other as a stepping stone for a shot at the gold."

"She's a girl who's tough to deal with," Adriana admits. "It's not just that she's quick and athletic. She's a hitter, too. She's got the whole package. Well. I've got a pretty good package, too. Let's lace up the gloves and see what happens."

ROUND ONE:

Lima happens. Almost immediately, Adriana's able to establish the jab. She's finding the Canadian with it and causing all sorts of problems. Because, when Missy's being hit with the jab, she's being STOPPED, and that means Lima has time to follow on with solid right hands. From the outset, we're on Adriana's terms, ranged warfare, with Missy unable to move in, out, or laterally, because, well, that left hand. It's always in her face, always holding her, setting her up for those hard rights. The Canadian is never hurt, but she's definitely taking some punishing shots. And, of course, Adriana is piling up points. Lots and lots of points. By the time the bell rings, there's no doubt about the results of the stanza. Lima's taken it wide and grabbed the early 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Like any good veteran fighter after a poor round, Missy adjusts. She's moving laterally, keeping the gloves high, picking off the jab. And, now we're seeing Missy's terms. She's ranging around the ring, popping forward for quick, accurate flurries that force Adriana to cover up, and, almost before Lima can react, Missy's popped backward and is in motion again. It's effective stuff from the Hall of Famer, who's now able to bring all that speed and athleticism to bear, much to Adriana's dismay. Now, it's Lima who can't get anything going offensively, because she can't find Peregrym and she's spending way too much time covering up from Missy's offensive forays. When the bell finally rings, Missy's taken it every bit as wide as Adriana did the first and we're even at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Missy on the move, but now Adriana adjusting. She's moving the feet, working the jab, trying to keep Missy both under control and at bay. At times, it works and we're back where we were in the first. At other times, Missy's able to avoid the left, stay in motion and pounce forward for those flurries at opportune moments. Add it all up, and we've got our first two-way round of the bout, with both fighters getting some of what they want, not just some, but enough to get offense going and score points. And, with both girls doing that, there's not much in it from the opening seconds all the way to the final bell. It's nip and tuck, and, when that bell eventually rings, neither fighter can be sure who's gotten the points. Turns out, it's Missy by the slimmest of margins, and Peregrym now leads 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Ladies working hard to get the terms they want. Peregrym wants to stay in motion as much as possible, make things hard on Lima, and, even at 38, she's leaving no doubt she can still leg for ten rounds. Lima, meanwhile, looking to get that jab on, slow the Canadian down, get her to spots where Adriana can get off in combination. And, for the second round in a row, everybody has some success, leading to good back and forth stuff and no one being able to gain much of an advantage. Late in the round, though, Missy's able to time a couple of quick pops forward to land some sharp combinations that force Adriana to the defensive. Those flurries prove the difference in a close round, giving the Canadian the points and putting her up a pair, 39-37, after four.

ROUND FIVE:

More of the same. Missy moving, bouncing forward for quick flurries. Adriana looking to create set pieces where she can use that length and power. BOOM! Right hand, LIMA and Missy is HURT! Adriana lands a perfectly-timed right off a left jab and Peregrym is STEPPIN' IN FENCE POST HOLES! Brazilian beauty all in now, battering Missy around the ring. Peregrym with the guard high, giving ground, hanging on. Eventually she's trapped on the ropes where Lima begins calling in artillery strike after artillery strike. Missy in deep trouble as the referee looks in closely, but the Canadian hanging on grimly, firing back here and there, trying to make it to the bell. Lima throwing everything she's got at the Hall of Famer, but it's not enough. When the bell sounds, Peregrym is still standing. Lima's taken it wide, but Missy still leads, 48-47.

ROUND SIX:

Adriana begins the clean up in a big way. She's stepping to Missy, backing her up with hard shot. Peregrym with no legs under her, can't get off square and has no base to fire back from. Result is Brazilian bullying Canadian around the ring with hard shot. Missy working hard to stay off the ropes, and manages to do it for part of the round. Eventually, though, Adriana pins her there and makes with the heavy guns again. SS Peregrym listing badly now, taking all sorts of shell as Lima begins emptying the magazines on her. But, somehow, despite all the punishment, the Hall of Famer stays afloat, grimly hanging on as the ref, again, watches closely, ready to leap in to stop the thing at any moment. But, that moment does not arrive. Again, at the bell, Peregrym is still standing. But. Lima's pitched a shutout and evened things at 57.

ROUND SEVEN:

Adriana walking down Missy. Peregrym still with shaky legs and Lima now piling up the punishment, backing her up with hard shot again and again. Missy jabbing back in spots, but that's all the offense she can manage. BOOM! Right hand, LIMA and DOWN GOES PEREGRYM! It's probably more the accumulated damage than the single shot, but, whatever it is, Missy is now flat on her back in the middle of the ring as Adriana strides to a neutral corner. Missy rolls to her belly at five, pushes to hands and knees at six, and gets to her feet at seven. She takes the mandatory and the ref WAIVES ON ADRIANA! Lima winging away with both hands now, drives Peregrym up against the cables yet again. Missy in a high, tight guard. Adriana SPLITS IT with a hard right and Missy's legs shake and IT'S OVER! The ref leaps in and it's OVER! And your winner by TKO7 is Adriana Lima!

AFTER:

Lima with a message for the rest of the division, both during the fight and after. "I'm still here, bytches," she shouts with a smile. "I'm still the best lightweight in the world, and don't forget it! And, if you have any doubts, ask Missy. Tomorrow. When her head clears!"
