KO7 Carter

Two of the iconic names--FCBA legends both--lace ‘em up to reprise one of the oldest rivalries on record. In their primes, both had been known as mobile big women, who liked to box and keep opponents at arm’s reach. Now bigger, slower, and perhaps stronger than they were then, these woman stood flat footed, falling in behind jab/right hands and mauling in beefy clinches it was stop and go action, with both women preserving energy, walking around each other trying to body-walk each other into ropes, but in the end: Lynda carter’s right hands would not be denied.

Where once, both women had been utterly dependent upon their legs for defense, both showed more upper body movement and reliance upon clinching than they had in their youth. Often fighting at close quarters as a result, Carter’s niftier, more accurate mitts proved the difference. Lynda was able to tighten up stroke--getting little right uppercut or hooking Brinkley’s paunch inside, while Christie seemed only able to punch effectively when the girls stood apart at range, Although Brinkley was competitive--winning the second and sixth rounds by shutout, and staggering Carter a right cross in the sixth--Lynda was the more consistent beauty, able to hurt her foe with a variety of punches throughout the night.

The end came from a sustained pummeling barrage if beefy, thudding carter punches as an exhausted Brinkley slid along the ropes, unable to clinch or defend herself any longer. Referees really should be acting to protect older fighters much soon than this--poor Christie was shelled as Carter was able to strap her thick, rich hooks and crosses, body and head, for nearly two full minutes. Carter stepped-with, kept in contact with her jab or body-stacking a limp Brinkley into the ropes to prop her up for brutality. Christie’s buttocks wobbly sadly, her head lolled as Carter’s fists exploded off the ribs, chest, arms and skull in a dull, thudding rhythm. Carter herself was on the verge of exhaustion when Christie finally stretched out onto her face at Lynda’s feet, leaving Lynda to wander away more relieved than ecstatic with the triumph.
