MANDY MOORE VS PAULA PATTON

Results: Lookout Writing: Archer

Mandy: 35 YO, 5’10 (1.78 m), 28-36-0, 19 KO since 2004, Foxfire Boxing

Paula: 43 YO, 5’7 (1.70 m), 15-19-0, 14 KO since 2011, Unmanaged

Before: “I admit I let things get slack in the ring the past two years,” Mandy Moore tells the press. “Kate Upton probably wasn’t the best opponent to re-start my career in 2019. Still, it’s been a good year. I got my first Emmy nomination. I am still young enough to be a contender at welterweight. I thought this fight with a solid free agent like Paula would be a good place to start.”

Paula Patton smiles cynically: “I am good place to start because she thinks I’m some sort of jobber she can just pick off. I am nobody’s jobber and I am no one who can just get picked off for a cheap win. I have struggled lately, but I am as fit and dangerous as ever. You’ll all find that out soon enough.”

“I never called you a ‘jobber’,” Mandy says mildly.

“But you thought it,” Paula snaps.

“Oh, you do a mindreading act now? Guess we’ll find out how good that is, too,” Mandy replies and Paula looks annoyed.

Come fight night, Paula comes to the ring in an aquamarine one piece swimsuit with matching glovs and boots (black laces). Her short hair is wetted down. Mandy comes to the ring in a silver grey one piece with black gloves and boots (grey laves). Hrr hair is pulled back in a tight battle braid. Both fighters cool and professional. The ring instructions done crisply and so is the glove tap. Back to their corner, the fighters wait and the bell rings…

R1: Paula and Mandy move out of their corners to clash in the middle of the ring. Quick exchanges of punches as they circle and counter-circle around each other. Head and body come under matching punching power. Then Paula bobs and dips, catches Mandy off balance and pops her hard on the chin. Mandy falls back and Paula strikes quickly to the head, smiting Mandy in the cheekbones and the sides of the head. Mandy trying to jab Paula back, but Paula now with hooks to the midsection to keep Mandy in retreat. Mandy trying to stay away from the ropes, Paula working the ribs and breasts, then a couple of surprise overhand shots to the forehead. Mandy covering up, but taking it to the belly as the ropund ends. Paula Patton takes the opening round wide.

R2: The fighters out promptly for the new round and this time, Mandy is able to knock Paula back on her heels with lightning uppercuts to the chin. Paula tries to regroup behind her jab, but Mandy circling around and striking quick punches from unexpected angles. Paula trying to counter, but Mandy now back in front of her and hooking to the belly. Paula struggling to get that jab going and finally does find Mandy’s midsection with strong blows that seem to drive the breath from Mandy. Paula trying to put distance between herself and Mandy, but Mandy though more cautious now, sticks with her opponent. Paula continues to be under pressure mainly to the body. Mandy maintains the steady punching down to the bell. Round goes to Mandy Moore wide.

R3: Paula strikes back early in the new round as she finds Mandy’s jaw with a smacking left. Mandy’s knees quiver and she stumbles off to one side. Paula moving with Mandy, bounces a right off her head and Mandy shudders again. Paula has to circle around Mandy, trying to herd her into the ropes, but Mandy wants no part of the strands, she has her gloves up tight around her head as she heads back to mid-ring, Paula scrambling to get in front of Mandy. Mandy is now ready and knocks Paula back with a straight right that catches her between the eyes. Paula shakes this off quickly and plunges into a toe-to-toe battle, driving her gloves into Mandy’s upper body. Mandy responds in kind and they pound each other with growing intensity. Then Paula switches to hooks to the belly. Mandy is sent stumbling back and gasping for breath, but time runs out before Paula can follow up. Mandy rubbery legged getting back to her corner. Paula walks firmly towards her corner. She’s pulled a win a close, hard-fought round.

R4: Mandy Moore worked on by the Foxfire corner crew as Foxfire lightweight & welter trainer Rachel Nichols heard to urge Mandy “not to let this girl take the fight away from you.” Mandy nods and pounds her gloves together. The bell rings shortly thereafter. Mandy goes on the attack, trying to shake up Paula with shots to the head, but Paula replies with head shots of her own. They keep at this until they are both looking foggy-eyed and sluggish, but then they move in close enough to take up another round of body punching. Paula starts pushing Mandy back, but it is a bitter step by step battle of attrition. Mandy still giving ground, but still countering stubbornly at the bell. Paula breathing hard with sweat pouring down her body. Mandy not much better off, but she moves back to her corner more firmly than Paula. Still, Paula has won another close round.

R5: Paula seen slumping on her stool during break. Rachel Nichols heard to say: “She’s running out of gas, Mandy. You got to get her this round.” Mandy nods. Mandy is clearly the faster out of her corner this round as Paula shows a defensive look as she moves forward. Mandy going to the body with a sustained series of punches. The hooks to the belly seem to be digging in deep and Paula starts to tip forward on these blows. Then another flurry of hooks to the belly leaves Paula seriously doubled up and now Mandy unleashes to head with uppercuts into Paula’s overhanging face. Paula backs away with shudders going through her body. Mandy moving forward and Paula manages to get up her jab. Mandy obliged to try to work her away around the jab and is finally able to score with scrubbing shots into Paula’s side ribs. Paula starting to wince from these impacts and this encourages Mandy to pour in the leather until Paula is just falling back to protect her aching flanks. Mandy goes back to the stomach to finish up as the round ends. Mandy Moore wins the round by a wide margin. Paula Patton looking very stiff getting back to her corner.

R6: Mandy out eagerly for the new round. Paula Patton not quite so eager, but she did seem to recover during the break and comes out aggressively. Paula going for the head again, but Mandy dodging so that the first punches are glancing blows off the head. Mandy then turns and fires a right to the jaw and then a left into the point of Paula’s chin. Paula comes to a frozen halt, her gloves up around her chest and she looks vacant-eyed. Mandy does not hesitate: she smashes in right/left uppercuts to the chin. TIMBER! Paula’s arms drop to her sides and she topples backwards and lands with a dull THUD! She lies there looking up blearily at the lights as Mandy heads for the neutral corner. The referee moves in and starts to count. Paula trying to push herself up on her elbows, but all she can do is roll over onto her side and curl up.

“EIGHT!...NINE!...TEN..YOU’RE OUT!” The referee calls and the bell rings to end the fight.

THE WINNER: MANDY MOORE DEFEATS PAULA PATTON KO6!

After: Mandy Moore is congratulated by her corner and once her gloves are removed, she goes across the ring. Paula Patton has been brought to her stool and checked out. Mandy gives Paula a supportive hug and some encouraging words.

“Paula gave me the kind of challenge I was hoping for. I got hit pretty hard in the 3rd and 4th, but that was my signal to get back in the fight. I did and I eventually won it. Now I need to continue my road back to contention. I am not sure who might be next. Maybe one of those pesky models who are all over the Welter Division these days. We’ll have to see. Right now I’ll just enjoy the win.”

Paula Patton has little to say after the fight: “I lost. She won. I am not at all happy about it. Did I run out of gas? I don’t know what you’re talking about. Good night.”

Mandy Moore looked good in this fight. True she took punishment, but she came back and still managed to win. Future fights will show if she is really ready for serious Welterweight contention, but this win does give hope to Mandy and Foxfire. No doubt this was a bitter loss for Paula and while she might not like to admit it, she did seem to lose energy as the fight went on. This is where it is a shame that she doesn’t have regular management. Such management might guide her into the new Cougar division where she might enjoy more success in the ring.
