Priyanka Chopra vs. Shay Mitchell
BEFORE:
Plenty of subplots in this battle between two of the top brunettes in the bantamweight division, none larger than the fact that Big Choppy, after her own efforts to capture the bantamweight gold failed, had to sit back and watch her newer stablemate claim the titles. And, if Priyanka has any hope of getting a chance of getting into that title picture herself any time soon, well, a win over Shay Mitchell is pretty much a must. "Here's the thing," says Priyanka. "Shay isn't the girl I want in the ring. We all know who that is. But, Shay's the girl I have. And, I'll deal with her first."
"I'm glad to see that Chopra's looking past me," says Shay with a smile. "It will make my job SO much easier."
ROUND ONE:
Well. Chopra's apparently NOT looking past Shay, because she's after her right off the bell. No feeling out process here. Instead, Big Choppy steps right to the younger woman and starts backing her up with hard, accurate flurries of leather. Mitchell, clearly surprised by the early offensive, is tossed onto the back foot and can't get off it. As a result, she's reduced to countering in spots while Priyanka imposes will, piling up points and punishment. Final minute sees Priyanka really rolling, almost completely suppressing Shay, who's basically just backing and covering while her rival wings away at her with both hands. Mitchell's never hurt, but, when the bell finally rings, she's already looking a little scuffed. Meanwhile, Chopra remains hard-eyed stalking back to her corner after taking the round wide to lead 10-9.
ROUND TWO:
Chopra continuing to force the issue, sitting down on punches, backing up Shay. BOOM. Right hand, Mitchell! And the Indian beauty is all wobbly butt! Shay now on the offensive, pouring fire on the older brunette, forcing her back to the ropes, then making with the body attack, as Priyanka forms the tight earmuff. Shay DIGGING to ribs and midsection, investing while looking to bring that guard down. Big Choppy crouching, clinching, trying to run clock. Shay using hooks upstairs, getting behind the guard, shaking Chopra, getting the referee's attention. He's looking in closely as Mitchell goes to town, but Priyanka's doing enough to keep him at bay, and, despite her best efforts, Shay is unable to finish. At the bell, Mitchell's taken it wide to even things at 19...and Priyanka's looking scuffed herself.
ROUND THREE:
Mitchell in command. She's backing up a still-wobbly Priyanka with heavy leather, getting off lusty with every flurry, piling up the points and the hurt, determined to, if not finish, at least clean up, and clean up, she does. For her part, Big Choppy trying to run clock here, get the legs back under her. And, despite Shay's best efforts, she's managing to do that, all while finding ways to stay off the ropes. By the final minute, Priyanka's gams are starting to come around. She's not exactly holding ground as Mitchell continues to advance, but, at least she's able to engage in a fighting retreat, landing some nice counters, especially in the final thirty seconds. When the bell rings, the younger woman's claimed the points to go up 29-28, but the older has ridden out the storm and looks ready to get back into the fight.
ROUND FOUR:
Legs back for the Indian beauty and she's right back on the offensive, coming forward, backing Shay up, getting physical and GETTING ROCKED! Mitchell with another pretty right hand and Chopra is HURT! Priyanka stumbles backward and GETS BLASTED with a straight right hand! Big Choppy DOWN! Mitchell to a neutral corner as Priyanka lays on her back staring wide-eyed at the referee who counts down at her. Older woman manages to sit up at five, works her way to her feet at eight. Ref gives her the mandatory and then WAIVES ON SHAY! Mitchell loosing flurry after flurry, forcing her rival back to the ropes and then going to work with both hands. Chopra hanging on desperately as the referee looks in. Shay all OVER the older woman, but, somehow, Priyanka hangs on to the bell. When it rings, Shay's grabbed the round 10-8 to lead 39-36.
ROUND FIVE:
Shay pressing the advantage, backing up the older brunette just as she did in the third. Priyanka able to counter some in retreat, but not able to hold canvas until...BOOM! Chopra steals a page from Mitchell's playbook and lands a SCINTILLATING right hand counter and Shay is wobbly butt! Mitchell stumbles backward and nearly goes down, and, it may only be the fact that Chopra is still buzzed herself that saves the younger brunette. Priyanka goes on the attack and is able to take control of the round, but she's not able to effect a complete clean up, nor can she put an obviously-shabby Shay on the canvas. But, what Big Choppy DOES do is make up Mitchell's early lead and blast past her, getting stronger as the round goes on. By the final seconds, she has the younger woman on the ropes and taking, and, at the bell, it's Big Choppy wide to cut Mitchell's lead to 48-46.
ROUND SIX:
Chopra in command. Shay's wobbly and can't get off square, while Priyanka's shaken off the damage and gotten those sturdy legs back under her. Result is an absolute disaster for Mitchell, who's in trouble from the opening seconds. Big Choppy lining her up with that jab, sitting down on right hands, determined to take the younger woman out of there. Shay looking ready to go several times, to the point where the referee seems ready to stop it, but, she's able to do just enough to hold him at bay into the final minute. Then, it gets worse. Chopra forces Mitchell to the ropes and begins tenderizing her body, digging to ribs and midsection, then ROCKING her with a hard right hook. Mitchell stumbles along the ropes and the ref looks ready to pounce, but, before he can, the bell rings. When it does, Priyanka's pitched a shutout and cut the lead to 57-56.
ROUND SEVEN:
Priyanka determined to finish. She's walking Mitchell down, beating her up. Shay game, trying to fire back in spots, tying up when she can, doing everything she can think of to slow the Indian freight train down, but nothing works. Instead, Priyanka wobbles Mitchell again with a straight right hand and then DROPS HER WITH A LEFT HOOK! Shay spilled to her left side as Big Choppy stalks to a neutral corner. Ref counting down at a battered Mitchell, but, somehow, Shay manages to beat the count. Ref looking very closely during the mandatory, has to be on the verge of stopping this, but, he WAIVES ON CHOPRA. Priyanka immediately batters Mitchell back to the ropes and then sends her stumbling to her right with a big right hook to the chin and the referee has seen enough! He bundles Shay to safety and it's OVER! And your winner by KO7 is Priyanka Chopra!
AFTER:
Yeah, Big Choppy's been in a fight, and it's obvious by looking at her scuffed face, but, this is definitely a "You should have seen the other guy" situation. "I told you coming in," the Indian beauty snarls. "Mitchell wasn't the opponent I wanted. She was just unfortunate enough to be the girl on the other side of the ring. And, anyone who ends up over there is going to get the same treatment. Until I get what I want."
