Before: Lane landing a plum opportunity after extensive negotiations—Pfeiffer a notoriously selective fighter likes Lane’s lack of pop, feels she can make this a test of reflexes and win a decision without taking any chances. Di in red tankini, Pfeiffer in black 2 piece cotton jockeys.

During R1: Form chart holds as Michelle works around her brunette, stabbing double jabs between Lane’s mitts and slicing in with surprise right leads. Late in the round, with Michelle dictating, she jumps in with a Roy Jones like right, bouncing her fist off Lane’s face, reloading and repeating the punch as the brunette stumbles back in shock. Shutout Pfeiffer.

R2: Lane making necessary adjustments—she gets lower, approaches with open palms to catch Pfeiffer’s jab, and hops into pound the blonde’s slender waist. lane answering the shutout as she puts some mileage on Pfeiffer’s legs, fighting off Michelle’s chest from bell to bell, putting an early grimace on Pfeiffer’s face with stern 2 handed work to the body.

R3: Michelle ups the pace, moving briskly to her left and stopping to potshot lane who is forced to come forward. Di can’t get to the body on the moving target, but Pfeiffer finds her foe’s face plenty—walking Lane into short lead rights on the mouth and dazing Lane on occasion as Di’s movement adds impetus to the punch. Pfeiffer coming back with another shutout as the girls take turns working each other over.

R4: Lanes turn, she gets the jumping Michelle, walking the blonde back to her corner and piling on between the hips, keeping her forehead on Michelle’s upperchest as the blonde tries to roll with the punches. Pfeiffer with her back to the ropes, gets outworked by the brunette—Lane awlat6s moving her hands—Pfeiffer scoring late with some chopping uppercuts as she pushes off with her lead shoulder.

R5: Best two way action of the fight as the girls rotate midring, trading combinations, each showing a tight defense to block rather than slip the other’s heat. Down the stretch, Pfeiffer’s handspeed provides an edge—she beats Lane to punch as the girls trade hooks and crosses simultaneously.

R6,7: Lane moves ahead on the cards with 2 blue collar rounds, roughing Michelle up, keeping the blonde’s back to the ropes, and never letting Pfeiffer catch her breath. Diane with her head on her foe, scrubs tummy, then comes upstairs with short right uppercuts, banging back Pfeiffer’s head repeatedly in these rounds, Michelle doing more covering up, laying in with Di—isn’t using her legs, and Lane is winning this fight in trenches.

R8: Pfeiffer gambling, turns brawler just enough to punch her way off the ropes as the give and take intensifies—both women rattle the other with biting hooks to the jaw. Final minutes sees Michelle re-establish that effective movement, getting off and getting out as Lane tries to cut off the ring.

R9: Lane’s been taking chances all night long to get Michelle’s body and it costs her this round as Michelle eats her up with jabs. Pfeiffer uses feints to make lane commit early to her crouch, then clipping the brunette with catspaw uppercuts as Di stumbling onto her heels as the first punch busts her up, while the second and third score clean to the face. Lane looking sluggish for the first time in the fight, goes back to her corner hurting as Michelle takes the lead on the cards.

R10: Fight slipping away from Diane Lane, and she comes out a warrior, walking through Pfeiffer’s jab and pitching lefts and rights to the midsection, teeth bared throughout, Pfeiffer staying calm, fighting brilliantly moving backward, picks Lane up with short curling lefts, pivoting to the left around the punch and nailing Lane hard straight right hands as the brunette turns. Di coming forward in desperation and late in the round, Pfeiffer fades back from a pawing left, then steps in with a short lead right, beating Lane’s right hand and sending the brunette to one knee. Lane holding back the tears, knows the knockdown is as good as knockout in a close fight—Pfeiffer’s eyes glitter in triumph as she stays focused. Michelle keeps away in the dying seconds and takes a unanimous decision victory over Diane Lane.

After: How many times has Diane Lane been just good enough to lose? Fighting Pfeiffer tough right up to the end, Lanes takes a knee and drops the duke as Michelle escapes with a good win. Pfeiffer making Lane pay dearly for those forays inside, lands all the big shots in this one—Di’s swollen face the evidence.
