Anya Taylor-Joy vs Sydney Sweeney
(Writing: LMW / Results: Lookout!)

Anya Taylor-Joy
(26, 5’7, 15-3 FCBA, League of Mighty Women)

Sydney Sweeney
(24, 5’3, 12-6 FCBA, Global Boxing Syndicate)

Pre-Fight: Two rising stars will be clashing next as League of Mighty Women’s Anya Taylor-Joy takes on Global Boxing Syndicate’s Sydney Sweeney. Both fighters made turbulent starts to this year as they both lost two and won one fight so far. Anya will be looking to come back from a stinging loss for the second time this year as her redemption arc against Bella Thorne came up short. Sydney, on the other hand, started the year with back-to-back losses, one of which was also against Bella, but she came back with a huge win over Minka Kelly in her last fight. So, she will be looking to build over that with another big win.

Anya is nowhere to be seen as the pre-fight press conference is ready to start. LMW’s executive director, Sharon Horgan, addresses the audience and apologizes for Anya’s absence, explaining that she is recovering at her locker room as she wasn’t feeling well after the weigh-in. This will surely lead to some rumors as some people would question the reality or rather the nature of Anya’s struggles that keeps her away from the media before the fight, considering that she easily makes the weight at bantam division normally and that she lost two high-stakes fights recently. Either way, LMW will be paying a monetary fine for Anya’s failure to attend the pre-fight press conference.

After Sharon’s explanation, it is Sydney’s time to address the audience and she seems to be amused by Anya’s absence and the news she received recently as she waits for the crowd to settle down with a smirk on her face. Once the room gets quiet, she immediately addresses her opponent’s struggles. “Sounds like Anya is second-guessing her decision to face me after her lackluster performance last month. I don’t care whether it is her body or mind that is fragile, I will be feasting on her weaknesses. I also don’t get why she is getting more media attention as a rising star, because I’m younger and more successful than her as I already won a title. If people still have questions about who is better, I will put that to rest at the end of the fight, just like I will do to Anya!” She winks and smiles as she ends this one-sided press conference.

Anya comes out first to the arena with LMW’s head coach Ali Landry accompanying her, instead of Summer Glau who usually takes on the coaching role for Anya. She looks focused on the fight as she walks down the aisle with a serious expression on her face and she enters the ring without acknowledging the fans that are cheering for her, which is also unusual for her.

She is wearing a black sports bra with red trim, matching trunks, red gloves and boots, while her hair is in a ponytail.

Sydney Sweeney comes out next with her coach, Jeri Ryan, beside her. She is all smiles as she waves to the cheering crowd on her way to the ring. She goes through her warmup routine in the ring as she listens to her coach’s instructions.

She is wearing a white sports bra with gold trim, matching trunks, gold gloves and boots, while her hair is also in a loose ponytail.

Both fighters come to the center of the ring to receive the final instructions from the referee and then they touch gloves. As they do so, Sydney intently tries to make eye contact, but Anya is looking down on her gloves instead and avoids her opponent’s gaze. They step back to their corners and we are now ready for 10 rounds of bantamweight action!

Fight: Round 1: Anya might have looked a bit timid before the fight, but as the bell rings, she moves forward with attacking on her mind, which is unexpected for her in early rounds. Looks like Sydney is also caught by surprise as she stops a one-two combination with her face to start the fight and quickly goes to a more defensive style with her guard up high. Anya maintains her distance, but she uses her reach advantage to tag her opponent from the mid-range. It looked like Sydney had the psychological advantage before the fight, but she looks shell-shocked now as she cannot get any offense going. She is stuck on defense within her opponent’s reach, but Anya is not within hers at the moment.

Anya keeps landing short combinations and even scores with some big hooks, while Sydney continues to struggle against the uncharacteristically aggressive offense of her opponent. Sydney tries to step closer to Anya in a few occasions, but she gets pushed back with double jab-straight combos that frustrates GBS’ young star. When the bell rings, she quickly walks over to her corner, hoping to get some directions from Jeri. Meanwhile, Anya looks confident as she listens to Ali after winning that opening round wide.

Round 2: Anya is on the attack early in the round again as she uses her range to keep her opponent away as she lands one-two combinations. Sydney is circling more and looking for opportunities more in this round as Jeri told her to look for angles to get inside and be more aggressive with her attempts. It pays off for Sydney around the two-minute mark as she cuts the angle and steps in at the right time to avoid a straight from Anya and then punishes her opponent with a few shovel hooks to the body. Anya ends up retreating and she switches to a more defensive approach to keep Sydney at bay.

The pace slows down for the rest of the round as Anya utilizes a defensive jab to keep her distance, so Sydney only gets some small windows of opportunity inside to land a couple of body shots. It ends up being a close round, but Sydney wins it to tie the score.

Round 3: The third round starts the way many people thought the fight would start at the beginning with Sydney on the attack and setting the pace, while Anya is in a defensive stance, looking to counterattack. Sydney finds success early in the round as on a couple of occasions, she steps inside and lands a few good body shots, but as the round progresses, Anya’s counterpunching starts to become an issue for Sydney. In one of these occasions, Sydney steps in and goes for a hook to the ribs, but Anya lowers her elbow in time to block that attempt and counters with a hook of her own to the chin. She follows it up with a jab-straight combination that drives Sydney back, who steps back just in time to avoid the following hook, which could have put her in the danger zone. That exchange forces Sydney to be more cautious during the last minute of the round as Anya scores with a few more jabs to close it out.

Another close round, but Anya edges her opponent this time and goes on top on the scorecards. However, since Sydney brought balance to the action in the second round, this has been anyone’s game.

Round 4: More of the same early in the fourth round, but Sydney is a bit more patient with her attacking as she tries to avoid giving up easy counterpunching opportunities to her opponent. After a more aggressive start, Anya seems to be content with sticking to her defensive approach as she slowly but surely adds up to her total number of punches landed.

Sydney’s patience pays off at the halfway point of the round. She steps in and fakes a hook to the ribs. When Anya shifts her body and lowers her elbow to protect her ribs, Sydney lands an uppercut to the stretched abs of her opponent. As Anya winces in pain, Sydney scores with a few shovel hooks to the ribs and then switches her focus and goes for an uppercut to the chin. Anya reacts in time to dodge the final blow of the combination, but she is now forced to focus solely on defense for the rest of the round.

Sydney scores with a few more punches here and there until the bell rings, but nothing too serious. Still, her dominant performance in the second half of the round means that she won it wide. During the break, Jeri praises her fighter as it sounds like they planned that maneuver and Sydney carried it out perfectly.

Round 5: Sydney is brimming with confidence after that last round, so immediately goes on attack in this one as well. She tests the body of her opponent with straights to the abs and hooks to the ribs. Anya is focusing more on defending at this point rather than finding counterpunching opportunities. However, the lack of counterattack threat lets Sydney to go for bigger swings, which might cause more problems for Anya.

Anya’s defense holds up for the most part during the first half of the round, but right after the halfway point, Sydney slips a big hook that lands with a thud on the body. Anya winces and starts to retreat, but Sydney is on the hunt now. She steps in and lands another hook to the opposite side and then goes to the midsection with an uppercut. She then switches levels and goes up top with a couple of hooks to the chin, which puts Anya in trouble and forces her to clinch. Anya uses her height advantage to put her weight on Sydney and get a moment to recover. Sydney hits her opponent with a few more punches from the clinch, but they don’t have much power behind them as she gets pushed down and away. Before too long, the referee separates them and Sydney goes right back on attack. Anya tightens her guard and keeps moving to avoid further damage to her body this round. Sydney does land a few more clean shots for the rest of the round, but it is in the final ten seconds in which she goes in to finish it big. However, just as she steps in and ducks, Anya lands a perfectly timed uppercut on the chin. It causes Sydney to stagger back and Anya hits her with a straight, but the bell rings just then.

Sydney dominated almost the entire round, so she won the round, but that last bit was scary for her and the GBS corner. On the other side, Ali tries to motivate her fighter by pointing out that she hurt her opponent with that last shot.

Round 6: Sydney makes a more defensive start to this round as it looks like Anya’s last second counterpunch in the previous round really did some damage. Anya picks up on it as well and switches to a more aggressive style like she did early in this fight. She utilizes her reach advantage once again and sets the pace as she comes in and out of range to tag Sydney with shots to the head. Sydney is still trying to fire back with body shots, but she is getting sluggish. After eating a double jab-straight combo, it is Sydney’s turn to clinch with her opponent. However, her moment of respite is cut short when Anya pushes her off and lands a hook. Hoping to have a bit longer to recover, Sydney is caught off guard and she stumbles. Anya quickly takes advantage of the opening, lifting her opponent’s head up with a lead uppercut to the chin followed by a big hook that drops Sydney! Anya goes to the neutral corner and the referee begins the count. 1…2…3… Sydney rolls to her back, her chest rising and falling with each heavy breath she takes 4…5…6… she sits up and takes a moment to gather her strength 7…8… she gets up to her feet and shows that she is ready to continue. After a quick check, the referee restarts the action.

Anya isn’t planning on giving her opponent any breathing room, so she goes right back to attacking with a one-two combination, but Sydney blocks it in time. Next time, Anya fakes the jab and lands a right hook instead that bypasses Sydney’s guard. Seeing the opening, Anya drives her opponent back with a double jab-straight combination and as Sydney takes a couple of steps back, she backs into the ropes. Anya goes for a hook to the ribs to open things up and then immediately changes levels again. Sydney sways left and right with each blow as Anya is demolishing her opponent along the ropes! The referee steps in and calls for the bell, it is all over!

Official Result: Winner via TKO in round 6, Anya Taylor-Joy!

Post-Fight: Anya is unusually feisty after the fight as she gets in Sydney’s face and says “Who is the fragile one now, huh?!” Sydney is still dazed and not in any condition to reply. Jeri enters the ring and pushes Anya away while telling Ali “Keep her away, aren’t your stable supposed to have manners?!” Ali replies “She wasn’t doing anything and it is funny for you to say anything about manners. Maybe you should focus more on better preparing your fighters!” They stare each other down for a moment before going back to taking care of their fighters. Sydney is helped to her corner stool and needs a bit more time to recover, but she eventually gets the thumbs up from the medical staff and leaves the ring with her coach, Jeri. On the LMW side of things, Anya gets her hand raised by the referee, but then she refuses to take the microphone and just quickly waves to the fans before leaving the ring with her coach, Ali.

Anya once again bounces back from a stinging loss with a hard-fought victory. She has been media-shy since her loss to Bella, but it doesn’t seem to be affecting her performance and she looks focused, so it might not be something for LMW management to be concerned about at this point. As for Sydney, she got another tough loss to make it three this year, but they were all against good opposition and her sole victory is a signature one over Minka, so there is still a chance for her to turn her year around.
