Alicia Vikander vs. Isabela Merced

BEFORE:

The height is the thing here. Vikander, a natural bantam, has about half a foot on Merced. But, if the fast-rising American is concerned about the Swede's physical advantages, she's not letting on. "Sure, she's a bigger girl," says Merced with a smile, "But, I'm just over five feet, so, I'm going to fight a lot of bigger girls. I HAVE fought a lot of bigger girls. And, I can handle them."

"She's quick," Alicia admits with a shrug, "But, I'm a former dancer and a great athlete. She's not beating me tonight. Or ever."

ROUND ONE:

That reach? Um, to quote Bill Murray, "It just doesn't matter!" At least not in the first. Because, while Vikander is looking to use that jab to control Merced, Isabela is, um, not THERE when Alicia throws it. Merced, instead, is there and everywhere as she ranges across the sand, dancing, bouncing, slipping, bouncing forward for quick flurries, then slipping away to circle again. Vikander using her own excellent footwork to try to match, cut, bring Merced to battle. Can't do it. She just can't FIND the teenager, who's throwing up so much sand they might need to truck in some more before this round is over, let alone this fight. When the bell rings ending the first, there's no doubt about it. The smaller Isabela has controlled things almost completely and taken the first wide to lead 10-9.

ROUND TWO:

Enough of that. Vikander's not going to have anymore of all this dancing. Instead, she's now angling and cutting the ring, using that jab to both control Merced and keep her out on the end of Alicia's punches. And, now we're playing Alicia's game. Vikander putting punches together well, scoring with both hands, suppressing the teenager, punishing her with hard right hands. Merced's game, no doubt about that, but, she's taking a licking at the hands of a bigger, more experienced girl right now, and there doesn't seem to be a lot she can do about it. Late round, Vikander backs Merced into the ropes and gives her a solid thrashing for about thirty seconds until the bell rings. When it does, it's another wide round, this time to Vikander, who's evened things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Merced adjusting a bit. She's slipping that jab some now, and, when she can, she angles forward, gets off quick flurries. But, when Vikander lands it? Everything's different. She's able to control Isabela, square her up, punish her with hard right hands. Thing is, unlike in the first two rounds, nobody is able to dictate terms this time. Result is a good, two-way round with both fighters working hard and both having moments...while neither can establish control or, really, create any space in the scoring. Instead, it's close throughout, with both the Swede and the American working hard while kicking up some more of that sand. Final seconds see the best punch of the fight landed by Vikander. It doesn't hurt Merced, but it gets her attention and leads to a nice closing flurry by Alicia which proves the difference, getting her the points close and putting her in the lead on the cards at 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

More back and forth as Merced works the feet and Alicia works the left jab. And, again, sometimes it's the length of Vikander that plays, and, other times it's Isabela and her movement. Result is another close round that seems to be trending in Merced's favor. Younger woman able to get just a bit more done for the first two minutes, and, with some well-timed stop and pops, she extends the lead over the next thirty seconds. Then, BOOM! A hard right from Vikander SHAKES MERCED! Isabela wobbly but and Alicia goes all in, winging away trying to get the stoppage. To her credit, Isabela is able to block and slip much of it and ship the rest. When the bell rings, Merced is still standing, and, despite the late heroics by Alicia, the lead Isabela built holds up. Barely. The American takes the points to even the fight at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Merced's legs looking a bit iffy and Vikander notices. She's lining up the American, stopping her with the jab, backing her up with hard right hands. Isabela getting punished a bit now, as the bigger woman's beginning to impose her wi...BOOM! Merced bounces forward and lands a PERFECT right hand to the chin and ALICIA IS HURT! Vikander covering up and now Merced all in with flurry after flurry of punches and DOWN GOES VIKANDER! Crowd going NUTS as the Swede crashes on her back to the canvas from the combined weight of shot. Merced BOUNCING to a neutral corner as Alicia stares up at the referee. Vikander sits up at six. Starts to rise at eight but STUMBLES BACK TO HANDS AND KNEES and it's OVER! Alicia still on all fours when the count passes her by. And your winner by KO5 is Isabela Merced!

AFTER:

Isabela BEAMING in the post. "Nobody thought I could win! She's bigger and all that. Well, she IS bigger, but, you know what? I'm BETTER. And, that made all the difference!"
