Audrey Hepburn versus Angie Dickinson (Retro Bout)

(Words: GBS / Results: Lookout!)

This bout was a huge event as it took place at the fabulous Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. The crowd would be made up of the top people in the world of entertainment. Audrey and Angie had come into town for this bout and a small vacation for both. Angie was coming off of Ocean's 11 and Rio Bravo. Audrey was fresh from The Unforgiven and Green Mansions having been tested in both films and in recent bouts back in Hollywood.

Angie was getting to be well known in Vegas for her bouts here and she was coming in as a slight favorite because of her presence in town. Audrey was not bothered knowing this was a side effect of the location. "The town can't be in the ring fighting me," she said before the fight. “Besides I look forward to fighting here in Las Vegas and putting on the best performance I can in the ring. Afterwards I would like to see all the grand entertainment that Las Vegas offers.” Audrey has tried to down play the obvious home town feel for Angie.

“I would too if I were her,” Angie answers. “I know I fight well here in Vegas and the town likes it, does well when I box here so I would be the favorite in this fight.”

Fight night arrived and the fans were excited to see such a big fight as the room was at capacity with no standing room only as those were gone as well.

Audrey came to the ring first wearing white and blue striped top with light blue short type bottoms.

Angie appeared and strolled to the ring. She was in a black push up and black short type bottoms.

Round 1:

Audrey and Angie exchanged jabs to open the fight. Hepburn watched for Angie's heavy left as that was her big punch. She went with head fakes, short punches, and circling to hopefully confuse Angie and win the round. And it did work as Audrey got some good jabs and crosses into Angie's face and chest. Eventually Angie broke away and circled Audrey. She landed a few good jabs in the exchanges but it was an Audrey round, a close one but Audrey's never the less.

Round 2:

Angie was more effective this round as both fighters were up on their toes to open the round. She immediately got into Audrey ribs and body with some hard opening straights. Audrey’s defense was slow and sometimes non-existent this round. She did get Angie off her body with back to back hard crosses of her own to Dickinson’s face. Hepburn returned there with a couple jabs before Angie head faked and backed to jab at Audrey’s face. Audrey backed away and regrouped as she went to hold Angie’s off with head fakes and moving her feet. But the round ends and Angie has won a close round to even the fight.

Round 3:

Audrey came out with more jabs, looking to land some heavier punches after. But it is Angie who got in a left hook and right jab combination to Hepburn’s midsection. Audrey was soon backing up with Angie advancing on her. She got in her heavy left hook to Audrey’s midsection and a right cross to her face. Angie then began to bash away at Audrey and soon had her on the ropes. After a left to Audrey’s jaw, HEPBURN GOES DOWN! The crowd goes nuts as Angie is directed to a neutral corner. Audrey rises by the count of 5 and is checked. Angie came back and was clinched by Audrey. The referee broke it up but Audrey did buy some time with that maneuver. She spent the rest of the round moving back from Angie. Angie won that round widely thanks to her punches and the knockdown.

Round 4:

Angie came out looking to end the fight right now with more heavy hooks. Audrey was more defensive as the round opened. Being knocked down can do that to a boxer. Soon Angie was being frustrated as Audrey was back to jabbing and moving. About midway through the round, Angie did get a heavy left hook to Hepburn’s midsection but missed with her follow up right uppercut. Audrey answered with 2 crosses to her body before moving out and back on her feet. About 30 seconds before the bell, Angie got back to back jabs to Audrey’s face in which did back Hepburn up. But Angie was again smothered by Hepburn’s gloves and movement. The bell sounded and another close round ended for Angie.

Round 5:

Angie came out slower this round, it was a surprise to the audience. But not to Audrey who immediately got inside and threw 2 uppercuts to Angie’s midsection. She then got a right cross to Dickinson’s chest in following those uppercuts. Soon Angie was backing away from Audrey, had she punched herself out was the question the fans wondered about Dickinson. They got their answer in a short firefight between the two boxers. Angie seemed to fare better but it was short as the boxers got tangled up and had to be broken apart. Then it seemed both fighters were back to moving and jabbing. Until just before the bell when Audrey cracked a beautiful left cross and straight right off Angie’s face.

The round came back close but won by Audrey this time.

Round 6:

Again Angie was slower in answering the bell, and Audrey was pleased as she went immediately with straights to Angie’s midsection. This caught Angie by surprise and soon she was being backed up. On came Audrey’s own left and right hooks to her face. Hepburn seemed to be punching the rest of the fight out of Angie. Angie tried to clinch but got 2 uppercuts to her face as she didn’t tie up Audrey well. Dickinson was backed into a corner and seemed to be wavering. Audrey threw a left hook to Angie’s face followed by a right uppercut. ANGIE GOES DOWN! Audrey watched her fall and then walked to a neutral corner. She watched as Dickinson was counted out on the canvas and the fight ended. KO6 – Audrey Hepburn.

After:

This fight was an upset as Audrey celebrated for a bit before coming to center of the ring to have her right glove raised. Angie was checked on, brought around and to her corner. She was then walked for the announcement. Hepburn shook gloves with Angie before posing for pictures. She left the ring to cheers. The Las Vegas books paid off at 3 to 1 on Audrey. The next night, Audrey was welcomed by Sinatra at his show in the hotel.
