Demi Lovato vs. Kat Dennings (Unified Bantamweight Title)

(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Two busty, sturdy brunette body-type rivals who've fought once before...to a draw. So, plenty of intrigue even if you don't throw in the fact that each can stake a claim to being among the top ten bantams on the planet, and, oh, yes, there's that little thing about the title.

"This girl might have been the best I've ever fought," says Kat with a nod. "She's THAT good. But. I know I should have won the first one. This time? I'm going to get the win AND the belts."

"This gold," says Demi, holding up a belt, "belongs around ONE waist, and that's MINE. And, as good as Kat is, she's about to find out that around my waist is where it's going to STAY."

ROUND ONE:

No "feeling out process" here. Ladies know what the other brings to the table, so they don't waste time with recon. Instead, they step to and get to banging away inside and DENNINGS BLASTS LOVATO! A minute into this thing and the champ is HURT! Demi stumbling backward and Kat letting the hands go, trying to pull of a stunner by ending this thing in the first. Lovato in desperate shape, reeling around the ring as the challenger lets her have it with both hands. Finally, Demi washes up against the ropes, and Kat calls in the heavy guns. To the body. A different fighter might head hunt here, but not Kat Dennings, who learned at the feet of Neve Campbell. Instead, she tenderizes tummy and rips ribs, going upstairs with uppies and the odd hook, then back down. Demi takes the pounding, rides it out, makes it to the bell. But, it's Kat wide and up 10-9 after one.

ROUND TWO:

Kat looking to at least clean up, stepping to the champ and letting her have it with both hands. Demi giving ground, banging back in counter here and there as Kat plays boss...BOOM! Fight turns on a dime as Lovato lands a laser-guided right hand and KAT IS HURT! Dennings sent stumbling to her right and now the champion turns over to the offensive, letting the hands go and sending the challenger wobbling back into the ropes. Complete 180 now, as it's Lovato banging away at Dennings as Kat holds on against the cables, and, like Dennings before her, Demi investing in the body, lathering the flanks and thumping the midsection. Challenger taking the licking to both head and body and continuing to tick. Lovato doesn't find the "off" switch, and, when the bell rings Kat is still standing, but. Lovato's taken the round wide to even things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Now Lovato looking to clean up. She's on Dennings from the opening seconds of the round, taking the fight to her, backing her up. Kat able to at least engage in a fighting retreat, but, it's a retreat nonetheless, as the champion calls the tune. Demi working plenty of body, but going upstairs more now, pressing her advantage not just to build up points, but to pile up hurt and look for the finisher that eluded her in the second. She doesn't find it for the first two minutes, but she lands plenty of hard shot. Final minute sees a change. Dennings able to solidify her front and fire back. Challenger holding her canvas now, but the champ unwilling to dial down the pressure. Result is several SHARP exchanges in the middle of the ring in which both fighters land hard, accurate leather. At the bell, Demi's claimed the points wide to lead 29-28, but Kat's back in the fight.

ROUND FOUR:

One of the most grueling rounds of boxing you're likely to see in an FCBA ring. Ladies simply meet in the center of the ring and begin trading hard shots both upstairs and down. It's all about imposing will, but neither champion nor challenger is willing to be imposed UPON. Instead, both hold canvas and give back as good as they get. TONS of thumping leather lands to both bodies, and even more finds the target upstairs. But, despite all the bombs being both thrown and landed, neither brunette is willing to back up a step. Instead, each hard shot is simply an invitation to throw back a rejoinder. And, then another rejoinder and another. Even in the final thirty seconds, the pace doesn't slow. Ladies slug right to the bell then stop, exchange a glance, tap gloves, and go back to their respective corners. There's nothing at all in it. Draw. Demi 39-38.

ROUND FIVE:

Fifth begins like the fourth ended with the fighters toe to toe in the center of the ring trading hard shots to head and bo...BOOM! Right hook, KAT and the champion is HURT! Lovato wobbles in place and actually grabs Dennings to keep from going down. Kat immediately punches free and sends the champion reeling backward toward the ropes. And, Kat POURS forward, winging away, battering the champion until she comes to rest against the cables. Replay of round one, with more emphasis upstairs this time, as Dennings clearly realizes the champion is on the verge of collapse. On the verge. But, not quite there. And, despite the challenger's best efforts for the remaining minute and a half of the round, Lovato's feet remain planted right on that verge. She hangs on, keeping the referee at bay and remaining standing until the bell. It's Kat wide again, though, and we're even at 48 at the half.

ROUND SIX:

Dennings rampant. Lovato in DEEP, DEEP trouble and Kat taking full advantage, loading up the big guns and letting shell fly at the wounded champion. Demi showing why she IS a champion, taking shot after shot and remaining afloat. She's firing back when she can, but to no effect. The legs aren't there. There's nothing behind the punches, and she can't get them on target anyway. Dennings, on the other hand, can and DOES, resulting in a completely one-sided beat down that sees Demi battered across the ring for two and a half minutes until she's finally pinned down against the ropes for another thirty seconds of serious punishment. Licking? Taken. Ticking? Yes. At the bell, Lovato is, like Elton John, is "still standing", but Dennings has pitched the shutout and gone into the lead 58-57.

ROUND SEVEN:

Kat all OVER the champion. Challenger clinical, though, working to set up punches to both head and body, but sitting down on all of it. ALL of it. Just THUMPING leather at the dazed champ, WORKING that bruised body, and PLOWING shots to the head aimed at ending this thin...BOOM! DOWN GOES DEMI! A right hook from Dennings and Lovato is spilled to her back! Crowd going nuts as Kat heads to a neutral corner. Lovato blinking, dazed as the referee counts...but again shows why she's a champion, struggling back to her feet at seven. Ref gives her the mandatory and waives on Kat. Dennings a buzz saw, pounding away, driving Demi back into a corner and letting her have it with both hands. Lovato hanging on, clinching, trying to play for time...and makes it to the bell. Champ looking wrecked but still alive. And trailing 68-65.

ROUND EIGHT:

Dennings taking the fight to Demi. Lovato in retreat from the opening seconds again. She's countering here and there, but clearly listing due to all the damage from Dennings' heavy shell. Champ again trying to manage the offensive, play for time, but time is running out. Kat's in control and there doesn't seem to be a thing Lovato can do about it. She can't hold canvas. She can't stop the Dennings offensive. All she can do, and, it's remarkable that she's done it so long, is survive. Final minute of the round sees a replay of portions of the last three. Demi on the cables. Kat working her over to head and body, piling on more and more hurt. Still, the sturdy Lovato legs hold the champion up through all the punishment. But. When the bell rings, Dennings has it wide and leads 78-74 with two to go.

ROUND NINE:

Dennings six minutes from gold and has to know it. But. Front Street fighters don't run. And Neve Campbell-trained fighters most CERTAINLY don't run. So. Kat's not hard to find. In fact, she's right in Lovato's grill. And, that's good news for the champ, who's in desperation mode. Demi winging away, going all in from the opening seconds, knowing she needs something big. Kat working body inside, continuing to fight, but staying sound, playing a little more defense, knowing it's Demi that needs something big, not the challenger. Lovato trying to find it. Tossing the kitchen sink at her rival. Seeking. Seeking. Seeking. But not finding. Final seconds of the round see a BLISTERING exchange in which both fighters land hard shots, but, at the bell, while Demi's won the round, Kat's moved to within three minutes of the title, leading 87-84.

ROUND TEN:

Lovato charges out of the corner and begins burning whatever is left in the tank winging away at Dennings. Again, Kat not running, banging back in tight, staying sound but not trying to run clock and win the title via the victory formation. Challenger giving as good as she gets in sharp exchanges and...BOOM! DOWN GOES DENNINGS! A short right hook from Lovato sends the challenger to her knees! Crowd going batcrap as Demi goes to a neutral corner. Kat to her feet at six. Takes the mandatory. And, ON COMES DEMI! Lovato, all guns blazing, drives Dennings back into the ropes. Kat in a high guard, taking heavy fire, jabbing back here and there while Demi goes to TOWN. Final thirty seconds of the fight. Lovato emptying the magazines...and it's OVER! The referee steps in! With just seconds to go, he waives it off! And your winner by TKO10 in "Hail Mary" fashion and STILL Unified Bantamweight Champion is Demi Lovato!

AFTER:

Gloves tapped and one of those hugs McCarthy loves so much before the champion takes the microphone. "Toughest fight of my life," she admits. "Physically, mentally, emotionally. Any possible way to thing about it. Just grueling. But. I found a way. Because, that's what champions do. They find a way."
