BEFORE:
Lots to like about this match-up on paper, with girls from different worlds colliding in an exhibition CBAD at the VIX headquarters in sunny California.

Paige VanZant, recent UFC dropout, is the newest signee to the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC), a sister company to the sport of boxing. Tonight, she dips her fists into the realm of celebrity boxing as well, facing off against ex-WWE alumni and some would argue, the Diva who changed the division forever, April Jeanette Mendez, or AJ Lee.

Ladies are eager to face-off in the pre-fight segment, brief comments to elements of the media by ring-side as the rest of the gymnasium begins to fill out.

“HUGE respect to AJ - I grew up watching wrestling Lee was one of the best of the best in the ring,” VanZant says first. That being said, we’re both starting off new careers tonight. The rules are different, the hits are different, so yeah, I think I have a pretty good chance to debut strong tonight. And who knows? I may be considering a foray into wrestling myself,” Paige winking at reporters as she ties on yellow boxing gloves.

“I feel the same way to Paige. It was a shame to see her leave the UFC - she was one of the most entertaining fighters in the division. Now that she’s left, sure, she can try out a couple of different disciplines, but let’s be clear - Paige is the newbie in the ring now, and I plan on showing her the ropes the hard way.”

ROUND 1:
Despite being cut from the UFC a few weeks ago, Paige still employing her punching skills with ease, comfortable rush of adrenaline for the blonde as she lands the first jabs on AJ’s guard. Lee not as accustomed to throwing punches in the ring (though she’s definitely socked a couple of her rivals to the face before), instead relying on her 12-fight experience over her rival as she blocks and dodges best she can. First round goes as you’d expect, however: Lee barely throwing anything in return and instead just seeing what the ex-MMA fighter’s made of. Paige pressuring the ex-wrestler around the ring, squeezing out jabs to the face and body to take the first round wide.

ROUND 2:
Lee however starts getting into the groove of things, checks the blonde’s aggression with counter-hooks to Paige’s face early. VanZant realising she can’t employ the same tactics as before as the more agile Lee is hurting her to the face with cuffing blows after she leaps to the side. AJ showing her rival how it’s done as she drives VanZant back with more pokes to the tummy, switching gears high and low as the blonde falls back to defend. But late in the round sees another rush forward from the confident VanZant, and the two gals end up sticking mutual fists into each other’s faces till the bell rings.

ROUND 3:
So far AJ’s holding her own ground against VanZant’s superior striking skills. But at the same time, Paige has to adapt to this no-kicking nor submissions fight set, meaning her punches are yet one-dimensional as AJ takes them on her arms or slips to the side, BANGS another straight hand into the nose and forces the blonde back. More strikes to the tummy landing as Paige grunts and covers, has to learn to take things slow moving from three to ten rounds. Last minute, AJ takes a shot across the bow from an overhand right, Paige jumping forward and unleashing her bigger guns to show her foe who’s boss. Lee finally retreats, take the same punishment to her body until the bell rings.

ROUND 4:
Here comes the clinch-work! Not as allowed in the boxing arena but girls wrap up on multiple occasions as they get in close, AJ hooking a right to the side of the head but gets held up when Paige ducks and charges on instinct. They exchange spanking gloves to the belly as they drive each other back and forth, but AJ definitely at a disadvantage here given her leaner stature and the fact that she can’t lock the blonde up in her signature Black Widow submission move. Paige capitalising, rocks her upstairs with a right hand to the cheek over and over before the referee intervenes to pry them apart. AJ looks slightly dazed for the rest of the round as she’s chased about by more jabs.

ROUND 5:
Lee is suddenly in trouble as she EATS a straight cross right to the face! OUCH! Paige showing off her skills and speed as she doesn’t wait for them to clash at the bell, rushing forward and slipping another overhand punch to the nostrils, drawing a grunt from Lee as she flounders back! Lee on the ropes all of a sudden as more punches sink into the tummy. She’s bent over and groaning, eyes flashing in a panic as Paige rocks her across the face with a dull hook! AND DOWN MENDEZ GOES!! AJ floored to her side from that brutal encounter and doesn’t get up in time for the 10-count - referee’s calling for the bell as VanZant makes her debut in rockin’ fashion!

Official Decision: Paige VanZant defeats AJ Lee via KO5!

AFTER:
VanZant back in fighting form despite the last couple of years of sub-par performances and injuries. True, she’s made short work of Lee in her first encounter, a natural athlete in her own right, but only time will tell if she can also hold her own against the other celebrities in the league.

The blonde is all smiles as she waltzes about the ring, pumping her hands as she relishes the rush of victory again. Meanwhile, Lee is slowly sitting up against the ropes, panting hard as the first bout of 2020 has ended in disaster. Paige heads over to comfort Lee, and the two girls exchange a brief handshake and promises of a rematch in the future.
