Before:  “It’s a chance to make a huge statement,” Jenny O’Dell says on behalf of Lake. “Beating up Cat., then  polishing off Jen G definitely shakes up the country club. You KNOW there’s a new hard-nosed girl in town when that happens and I’m just glad Lake’s finally getting the opportunity to showcase.” Garner chafing at the suggestion she’s “The Next Legend to Fall”: “I butted heads with Charlize and she got the better of me,” Jen admits, “but that’s all it was—one series. Anyone who thinks I’m a spent force obviously doesn’t know me—and you’d think Jenny O’Dell would know better. Lake fought a great fight against Cat and deserves my attention; I just don’t like the way Jenny’s promoting her as legend-killer. I do understand it as a business decision—but I don’t like it.” Jennifer in black bikini; hair tied back off her brow; black gloves. Lake in fire-engine red bikini; white gloves; unruly brunette curls.

During R1: Lake the aggressor—twisting and bending into her delivery, lashing the punches home in lank arcs. Jen retreating, keeping dukes up: punches bounce loudly off shoulders and parrying mitts as she gives ground. Thudding rights/lefts score against Jen’s waistline: Lake pursing her lips as she gets in there thick Lake loose-limbed, very heavy handed—she turns punches over nicely—elbow comes up as brings the fists back to her own chest on follow through. Down the stretch, Jen answers all with a single thunder-bolt hook out of the crouch, countering with pin point accuracy to lake’s chin. BELL GOES DOWN! Lake scoots to her glutes, eyes wide, lips parted: just like that Jen steals the round and steals 10-8.

R2: Jen over to offense. She steps in strong—weight on left foot as she’s pounding in stiff jabs. Working behind jabs to head and body. Jen drops in short right crosses off her shoulder—penetrating Lake’s defences and bouncing mitts off face. When lake covers up peek-a-boo—Jen bangs the midsection: Garner lowering her head, chugging away muscular rights/lefts to make Lake’s abs sing. Good footwork from Jen: she’ll deliver heavy amidships, then step right while jabbing Lake up top: all bell can do is turn while blocking. Thudding shutout, Jennifer Garner.

R3: Rangy Lake aggressive in first minute—but wide with lanky shellack: Jennifer able to cover up, duck inside arc of the b lows. Second minute sees Jennifer retake initiative with stirring body blows—really hammering at firm ribs and tummy after ducking Lake’s slinging shots. Jen working up torso—by the final minute, she’s ringing both fists off Lake’s face—punching Bell onto her heels.. Lake discouraged, backing up, getting hit hard this round as Jennifer’s compact, heavy, and accurate combinations prove decisive.

R4: Lake needs a round to stem the tide: Jen being very stingy. Bell dipping her left shoulder, straps a cranking left hook off Jennifer’s stomach. Lake brings the punch back to her own midsection after delivery, then redeploys a slinging left hook up top, toggling Jen’s chin. Garner withstanding the heaviest shot she’s taken all night, answers back with a pair of jabs against Lake’s bulging jugs, then a chopping right hand to mouth. Weight  on left (front) foot, Jen salts way the exchange with a thudding hook I Lake’s tummy, doubling it to hook her in the flank as Lake cringes forward. Goes like that: Lake getting off and doing well, only to be bludgeoned back into compliance by Jen’s rigid, bashing combinations.

R5: Jen’s jab slowly taking over the fight—very stiff, ringing punch, penetrating to body or face as Jen steps it in with authority. Lake backing up clearly isn’t the same fighter: she’s trying to find time to set her feet and sling power into Jen. Jen the shorter, snappier puncher—bouncing blows off Lake’s body, crouching down to avoid receipts, then ringing Bell up to head. Hooks across Lake’s breasts have her dismayed: Jennifer doing yeoman’s work in one of the FCBA’s most under-rated racks. Jennifer’s work rate beginning to unnerve Lake—Garner ringing the body up, then clanging away to head, coming forward behind the jab, then repeating it all: Lake’s breaking down. Down the stretch—Jen’s punching Lake groggy with a pair of stiff jabs to face; shearing right cross torque’s Lake’s head, slumping her against the ropes; muscular left hook takes Lake in her ribs, just behind the right elbow. Bell hurt, stooping forward behind her mitts: Jen the right uppercut in close, Jen eases her right hand down inside Lake’s right arm—again working her girl thus—reaching in, clipping up—poor Bell helpless against the ropes—swooning out on her feet when ref jumps in. TKO5 Jennifer Garner in workman like fashion.

After: Learning experience for Lake Bell-she’s soundly beaten tonight by a veteran who didn’t appear to be as diminished, dulled, or war-weary as observers had been predicting, “I felt sharp,” Garner confirms. “I know Lake’s no cupcake and O’Dell’s no dummy: if I’d limped into this thing, they’ve have run me out of there without mercy. I think Lake just needs to tighten up some—she’s a little loose in her stance, lots of openings. I just stayed patient, let her punch herself out of position, then cleaned up.”
