MELISSA BENOIST VS DAKOTA JOHNSON

Dakota: 30, 5’7 ½ (1.71 m), 4-11-0, 4 KO since 2015, Global Boxing Syndicate

Before: “I have had a long road to get to this point,” says Dakota Johnson, “being a free agent is not a lot of fun. I probably took fights I shouldn’t have because I needed to keep active. Now GBS has given me a home. I really want to show them they signed the right fighter. Melissa’s a tough fight as far as I am concerned. I am doing all I can to be ready for it.”

Melissa smiles slightly and nods at Dakota: “I am always glad to be considered a ‘tough fight’ and I assure Dakota that it will be true. I have something to prove myself. I lost my last fight to Caity Lotz and I want to bounce back from that fast. I am VERY motivated for this fight.”

The two fighters shake hands at the end of the presser, but they both look very determined to get a win from this bout.

Fight finds Dakota Johnson in a red bikini with white gloves and boots (red laces. Melissa Benoist is in a royal blue bikini with red boots and gloves (yellow laces). The ring instructions are covered efficiently and the fighters tap gloves before returning to their corners. The bell rings.

R1: Dakota attacks eagerly as the bout gets started, but she immediately runs into sharp jabs to the face from Melissa as she tries to come in. Then Melissa suddenly strikes with a solid right to the jaw. Dakota stumbling back and Melissa tries to follow up with more shots to the head. Dakota lashes back with defensive rights and lefts into Melissa chest to slow her up. Dakota then circles away and hooks Melissa to the stomach as she comes close. However, Melissa counters with a strong set up hooks to the midsection that knocks Dakota back on her heels. Melissa pressing forward as Dakota retreats behind the cover of her jab. Round ends and Melissa wins the round wide.

R2: Though banged up in the initial round, Dakota Johnson not about to give up going on the defensive. She comes at Melissa quickly, but this time she shows some nice footwork that draws Melissa off balance. BAM! Dakota Johnson lights Melissa Benoist up with rocking right uppercut to the chin. Melissa goes floundering back on shaking legs, trying to cover her face as Dakota pursues with a barrage of shots to Melissa’s body. Melissa gets her jab going to slow Dakota up. Dakota responds by circling around the blonde and keeping her under punching pressure to the bell. Dakota looking pleased with herself as an unsteady Melissa makes her way back to her corner.

R3: Dakota again on the attack as the new round begins, but Melissa challenging her with sharp punching of her own. Battle starts to swirl around the center of the ring as the two fighters circle and counter-circle against each other. Punches being fired rapidly at head and body in leather volleys. Dakota then moves in close. She is hammering Melissa to the body and looks to be trying to get back into the ropes. Melissa stands her ground and punches back at Dakota’s body. Two are soon toe and toe and ramming home the punches. Things look very even, but then Dakota able to dig her hooks in deep into Melissa’s belly so that she tips forwards. Then Dakota bangs rights and lefts off the sides of Melissa’s head. Melissa falls back and digs in with the jab. Dakota continues to punch away until the bell rings. Judges give the close round to Dakota Johnson by a narrow margin.

R4: Dakota wastes no time returning to the offensive as the latest round begins, but Melissa Benoist strikes first as they clash at center ring. Melissa feinting to the belly, strikes at Dakota’s chin with a lightning one-two. Dakota stumbling back as Melissa surges forward, she pounds hooks into Dakota’s belly and doubles her forward. Then Melissa brings rising uppercuts into Dakota’s overhanging face, driving her gloves between Dakota’s defending mitts and into her face. Now Dakota wobbles back into the ropes and she tries to get her gloves up around her head, but Melissa brushes passed them to swivel Dakota’s head one way and then the other with crushing rights and lefts. Dakota collapses forward. Melissa steps to one side as Dakota hurtles passed her to land hard on the canvas. Melissa quick to the neutral corner as the referee moves in. Dakota struggling to rise, but she can’t seem to get her arms and legs to work properly.

“EIGHT!...NINE!...TEN!...YOU’RE OUT!”

THE WINNER MELISSA BENOIST BY KO4 OVER DAKOTA JOHNSON!

After: Melissa Benoist smiling happily in her post-fight interviews: “That felt really great! Dakota challenged me, gave me a couple of tough rounds, but then I came back and took her out. This makes up for that loss to Caity Lotz. I can’t wait to see who I go up against next!”

“I think I got too eager,” a rueful Dakota Johnson says to the press, “I was scoring against Melissa, but then I rushed in recklessly and paid the price. I just wanted to win for GBS and I am disappointed that I let them down. I will learn from this and do better next time. I promise!”

Good comeback fight for Melissa Benoist following the Caity Lotz setback. Another disappointing outing for Dakota Johnson. Dakota did show some punching power and tricky footwork. Hopefully her new management will be able to build on these and help her onto a winning track down the road.
