COALITION VS WOLFPACK I

Before: mish in tough—Bosworth pegged as an eventual Dushku-buster if she ever got focused—Williams giving away every tangible stat as she looks to throw back her portion of the Coalition. “She’s just like everyone else,” chirps a confident Mish at the podium, “she’ll start the fight bigger than me, and end up smaller. Did I mention how beat up she’ll get in the process?” Bosworth amused, distant throughout—unflappable. “Williams hasn’t impressed me at bantam,” Kate shrugs. “She caught an undernourished Knightley and got served warmed-over Dani. That’s it—that’s the resume—you don’t see Mish with serious names at 120. I think this is a mismatch to tell the truth, but her—you mob Katie Holmes like a bunch of thugs—what do you think’s going to happen?” Williams in black push up, white lace trim, black boy cut trunks—Kate in tri-color bikini top, darker shade bottoms, hair wet n’curly.

During R1: Mish lobbing overhand rights, pawing the jab, hopping into lead hooks—all power all the time. Bosworth smooth n’ cool--lead right hands bounced tidy off Williams’ pate, shifty step-outs, left hand low, right casual at chest or cheek. Kate looks like she’s in second gear for her—almost too calm—languishing on the ropes showing Mish shoulders and sneaky slip moves, but not punching. Williams bashes away for hard working points as Kate shows polish, shine—not enough punching.

R2: Kate backing to ropes, showing Mish the lead left shoulder, chin tucked, left low, right at ear, Bosworth, cute, relaxed—but it’s not like Williams has never seen a closed stance before. Mish pounding away both hands, shifts a step right, squeaks a hook inside Bosworth’s right mitt and KATE SAGS INTO THE ROPES! Bosworth momentarily shook—reaching achy with her left tp pull Mish’s head forward—veteran Williams immediately pounds away to trunks—gesturing to the back of her head to blame Katie as ref intervenes.  Rest of the round all Mish marching on Bosworth—Kate sliding to her right along ropes, Mish stepping with, swinging at the waist, looping rights over the top to clang away on Kate’s jaw. Bosworth staring, dazed—she’s lucky she’s the bigger woman or we might be seeing a KO right here and now. After the bell? Cheap late low blow—Mish falling in with her body to cover the infraction—breathy gasp from Kate as she gets her dose of scrappy blown up flyweight.

R3: THERE’S Katie B—easy footwork left, spiking jab off the top of Mish’s skull, lead rights sliding in on Mishy’s face, and quick clawing hooks upside the head. Bosworth gracefully bounding away from sudden Mish pressure, gobbling Williams up with the jab, then putting combos together off those pretty lead rights. Mish cuffed and swatted—Bosworth not really setting down, but she’s hitting what she wants, whenever she wants it. Shutout Kate.

R4: Mish isn’t convinced—she’s back in Kate’s grill, slugging ferociously as Bosworth lounges in the ropes again. Kate turning with punches, leaning her body this way and that, taking the edge off, occasionally patting down on Mish or tieing her—but where’s the punching? Williams unconcerned with lack of accuracy—she’ll pound away arms, shoulders, hips, when she can’t take tummy, tits, chin. Kate likes to ride her left hand around Mish’s head as a clinching tactic, bit Williams pounds away low every time—blaming the trajectory on Bosworth pulling her head down (natch). Swarmy grin Mish en route to her corner—hard work, rough tactics, veteran tricks trumping sheer talent through 4.

R5: Whenever Kate puts forth effort—she dominates. Circling midring, hands relatively low, but feet and head movement keeping her safe—Bosworth picks away at Mish, Lead rights can’t miss—bouncing off Williams’ forehead crisp and clean. Kate with that quick catspaw hooking action, doubling up as she shuffles right or pivots left, keeping the elbow in, getting her shoulder behind it pretty—Mish stumbling off balance as kate scores. Bos with a nice slanting jab down into Mish, a cutting little left uppercut to complete the educated portside technique.

R6: Kate backs off to lounge in the ropes—why? Bosworth countering clean, hitting Mish with slithering hooks and uppecuts, but content with just one good swipe at a time. Mish probably not as clean, but throwing punches by the bushel, Late the round, Mish bends into a clanging overhand rights that swivels Bosworth’s head—Kate staring, stumbling to her right along the ropes—she faces into another right that keeps her toppling. Bosworth belted picturesque right hands on the jaw all the way to the corner—something out of “Rocky” as she covers up and ships shellack at the bell, ref doesn’t get on Mish right away—she’s able to park ANOTHER cheap left hook thick to trunk, easing in with her shoulder to obscure the foul.

R7: Kate going to ropes, but this time punching in combination and spinning off them—luring Mish in, scoring, and getting away before Williams can recover. Mish walking the bigger woman down, but getting nibbled to death all around the ring—plenty of little touches setting up one sharp lead right or a brace of hooks to put curly-headed blonde on her heels.

R8: Shut out Mish Williams, She’s taking what Kate offers—Bosworth goes to ropes, gets coy with her defense—Williams gets up on that shoulder and lathers. Gets ridiculous—nothing coming back, so Mish fires gaudy 3 and 4 hooks, 2 and 3 right hands up underneath, getting betting brawny with her shoulders and forearms to pin Kate down. Bosworth crossing her arms, turning—never really getting caught hard—but she’s taking a consistent beating below the beltline and that’s not good for a girl.

R9: Mish coming forward with punches—Kate fighting well in reverse—both having their moments. Seesaw round goes all Katie in the final  minute—she steps back, steps and TIMES Mish a Sugar Ray Robinson hook on the jaw, Mish scattered to all fours as Bos sidesteps, then walks calmly to the neutral corner. Williams takes 8…and nothing much happens to her. Inexplicably, Katie B squanders the finishing opportunity, basically pawing at Mish and boxing out the round.

R10: Kate puts on a defensive clinic WHEN SHE SHOULD BE LATHERING MISH SENSELESS! Bosworth feinting, changing directions, keeping well away although she’s tackled into the ropes at one point and scuffed up. Williams seen to be coming forward, seen to be throwing punches—she’s not landing, but judges have to give her the round. Comes back UD10 Mish Williams, by a single point.

After: Upset—chest pounding vindication for Mish who relishes pointing at ringside press and mocking them for choosing against her. Outgunned veteran pumped out her usual high octane output, fairly low connect percentage, but landing the occasional jarring blow and winning minutes in no-frills fashion—actually a fine testament to her experience and stubbornness in the ring. The Kate Bosworth who turned back Lori Loughlin and Evangeline Lilly nowhere to be seen tonight—lots of supple moves and classy looks but lackluster effort overall.
