Camila Mendes versus Cassie Scerbo

Before: “Obviously this is a big day for me. If you need to be told why, well then you can leave right now. Cassie Scerbo. She’s at the top of the food chain in the flyweight class. I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while now. I get by Cass and I can write my own ticket. This is how you take the steps in this league, right over former champions. So it’s time to start this exciting process with Cassie being the biggest move of my career.” Camilla Mendes is amazingly nonchalant as she comments about her hard as nails opponent.as if she is just another piece to a puzzle.

“Man if I had a nickel for every time I heard this sort of talk from an opponent I’d be somewhere between Bill Gates and Warren Buffett on that Forbes list. It’s not that I don’t take it seriously. Heck I’ve been right where they’re at, all that yacking and stamping of the feet. There’s one more tiny step though. The work. At some point you’ve got to stop the yacking and do some serious training. Movie premieres and celebrity appearances or running hills and sparring with the big girls. One gets you in the talk for a title shot and the other leaves you so far away you’ll never get to see the lights of the arena. We’ll see where this girl lands tonight.” Scerbo’s opening surprisingly almost instructional rather than full of the usual diabolical spite that she’s famous for.

Both girls looking like they’re ready for action. Mendes in a white bikini with black boxing shoes and gloves, her hair back in a ponytail. Scerbo in Bazz black bikini, gloves and boots, her hair also pulled tight in a battle ready ponytail.

Rd 1 Both fighters dart out of their corners. The stock in trade for both is quickness and speed so no one is surprised to see the fight shift into a high gear right off the bat. Scerbo jabbing as she circles Mendes who is trying to counter with some roundhousing to the body. Scerbo lands a couple of sharp jabs that snap back Mendes’ head bringing the crowd to its feet. Camila looking perturbed at losing the first points chases Cassie trying to land a left-right combo, getting her with the first punch but missing badly on the second as Scerbo dances away out of range. Mendes isn’t giving up. She’s grinding in on Scerbo with some short punches to the body. Cassie in and out with her own combos doing a decent job of avoiding Mendes. Suddenly Cassie plants her left leg and launches a blur of a right hand cross that lands solidly to Mendes’ side. She lets out a wince as the bell rings and she bends to her left at the force of Scerbo’s punch. The crowd screams its approval of the first round, a solid one for Cassie.

Rd 2 Each fighter appropriately warmed up get right into it. Cassie going back to work on Mendes’ side exploring the ribs for any damage from the previous round. Meanwhile Cammie’s good to go. She swings away connecting to the jaw. Cassie backs off looking to gather after taking a good shot. Mendes follows after her jabbing with sharp lefts. Scerbo rests against the ropes showing that there was damage done from the head shot. Cammie gets low and slugs at the body. Cassie covers up and then quickly lashes out with an underhand right that sweeps across Cammie’s face. Both girls going at it now. Cammie lands another solid punch to Scerbo’s face knocking her back again. Cassie fighting off Mendes as she tries to rain down punches on the Bazz flyweight but Scerbo is too quick. She ducks down and around Mendes getting away from Cammie as the round ends clearly in Mendes’ favor.

Rd 3 Between rounds Cassie Scerbo takes in a rather animated lecture from Pointy Del Crunchy. She comes out on the attack. Despite Medes having the advantage from the previous round Scerbo is on the hunt. She tags Cammie with a left-right combo to the head and before Mendes can react follows up with a right hand cross to her left side. Scerbo’s return to Mendes’ left side pays dividends slowing down Cammie and allowing Cassie to get back on track with her quick darting in and out attack mode. Mendes more cautious protecting her side while Scerbo jitterbugs outside her opponent’s reach and dancing in scoring with punching to the midsection and occasionally to the head. The pace has gotten hectic which is playing into Scerbo’s strength. She’s using her quickness to circle and jab at Mendes. Crowd up on its feet enjoying the back and forth from each fighter. Both are showing off superior speed throwing jabs and crosses. Still it’s Scerbo quickness that is knocking Mendes around. Cammie trying to dart in on Scerbo but finding little success as Cassie seems to be getting to where she needs to be and throwing a hammer before Mendes can get any kind of combination in. The round ends with Cassie walking back strong to her corner.

Rd 4 Camila struts out to mid-ring and faces off against Scerbo who is bouncing up and down, all around trying to find an angle from which to attack her opponent. Mendes dives in straight ahead after Cassie. She throws a jab and a right cross to the body connecting with both. Scerbo backs down from the two punches but steps right back in tagging Cammie with a solid right hook. Camila reacts clinching with Cassie to slow things down. She’s doing some very effective inside punching until the ref breaks things up. Mendes immediately gets back in close. Forcing Scerbo up against the ropes not giving her a chance to get out in space. Cassie spending an inordinate amount of time trying to untangle herself from Cammie who is scoring off of short punching to the body and a few uppercuts to the chin. Scerbo looking to the ref to help her out but Mendes is allowed to bulldog her way through the round with some very effective close in battling. As the round ends Cassie Scerbo shrugs her shoulders at the ref who turns away as if he wants nothing to do with the whining complaint.

Rd 5 Cammie is out with a purpose, tie up Cassie Scerbo. It’s apparent that her corner has shifted away from trying to keep up with Cassie Scerbo’s and is going to try and muscle their way to victory. Meanwhile Cassie isn’t allowing Mendes to get close. She’s pushing out jabs, sticking and moving, sticking and moving. Camila circles in on Cassie lashing out with a strong right hand that connects. Scerbo takes the bait and engages hitting Mendes with three quick jabs as she moves in close. Mendes sees her chance muscling her way to the body. Scerbo tags her with two more jabs. Cammie doesn’t back down. She’s returning fire with everything she’s got hitting Scerbo with rapid fire two punch combinations. Both fighters toe to toe now. The crowd roaring its approval with each girl throwing everything they’ve got at the other. Mendes sticking to the body and finishing with overhand rights while Scerbo bobs and weaves reaching out and touching Cammie up with jabs to the face. Her speed clearly having an effect Camila. The pace is intense with the punches turning into blurs. Neither girl backing down until Scerbo catches Mendes with a right hand cross that staggers her for a moment. Pandemonium erupts in the crowd as they sense a knockout. Scerbo steps in to finish the job just as the round ends, the ref stepping in and stopping the interaction immediately after the bell rings.

Rd 6 Scerbo starts taking charge. She’s getting to Cammie with her jab. She’s skipping in and out on her leaving her mark every time. Meanwhile Camila is going all Smokey Joe. She’s down low bobbing and weaving up and down, and side to side. She’s just as effective as Scerbo getting into position and getting off the right punch for the job, Her ammunition is being unloaded mostly inside and to the body. Mendes not paying as big a price as most think getting inside while Scerbo is cruising with ease at the outskirts touching Cammie’s face whenever she needs the points. Both fighters are looking slick but Cassie seems to be the quicker of the two by a small margin. She steps in with a left leg and throws a right hand at Mendes but Cammie sees an opening and connects to the body with a right hand and then an immediate left hook to the upstairs and DOWN GOES CASSIE! The two punch combo sends Scerbo to the mat with the ref counting. A stunned Cassie Scerbo seemingly cruising gets caught and is trying to climb the ropes. She barely gets off her knees when the ref gets to ten and waves it off. IT’S A 6 ROUND KO FOR CAMILA MENDES!
