Before: Spicy prefight encounters - Holmes and O'Dell frequently bracing for attack as tempers flare with The Trio. Cooler heads prevail - but it's edgy. "You know - it's almost like a stable war," Katie says in prefight. "These girls have coalesced as a group to stop me, and they haven't been shy about getting in my face. It's been hard slogging, and Kelly's probably the best boxer of the bunch, so I can't let up. My blood is up now though - they've been fierce, and that's brought out my own ferocity: Kelly's definitely going to get all the Katie Holmes she could ever want." Rutherford graceful, composed - taking the opportunity to introduce herself. "I'm Kelly Rutherford. I'm probably best known as the ingenue who ruined Heather Locklear's comeback after she'd been beaten into retirement by Courtney Thorne Smith. Heather regrouped, tried to build her confidence against me on Melrose, and I stopped her on the beach. After that, we pretty much only saw Heather in rickety cougar bouts and special nostalgia fights. Rather than go on about Katie and her shortcomings - I thought I'd open the floor for questions - maybe give you guys a chance to get to know me. Yes, you sir in the plaid shirt and baseball cap?"

Tractorpull: "You brought up the word cougar: you or Deborah Farentino?"

Kelly: "Me."

Tractorpull: "Follow up question: what's Katie got that you don't have, and how are you going to handle her?"

Kelly: "Not much," smile. "No - listen, she's got youth, and she's just completed her first marathon - which was a clear sign to the rest of us that she's getting serious about fighting. We're both boxers though, and she's going to have to realize that my skills equal hers. She's harnessed her height and been able to translate it into wiry power - but I've hurt girls too, and I don't think Katie takes a great punch. I think I can damage Katie with right hands and be the aggressor in this fight. Yes - you in the natty pinstripe?"

Celebrity Ring: "You, Jane and Poppy have been very vocal about BSE in the last few weeks - what's with all the hate?"

Kelly (smiling) "It's not hate exactly. BSE girls swagger, and they do have a bit of a rep that irritates other fighters. Jenny O'Dell always walks into a room with this badass look on her face and her shoulders thrown back; Natalie's an ivy-league snoot; Charisma's all 'look at my curves' - you know? Katie used to be nice, but lately, she's been very bossy in the press and in prefight, and she shouldn't be pushing her weight. Oh, and don't even get me started on Kaley and Britney. When you fight a BSE girl, you want to embarrass her a little bit - rough her up and humble her. That's just the way it is."

BLONDE! Magazine: "Kelly - you, Jane and Poppy form a formidable bastion against up and coming brunettes like Katie. How do you feel about the role of gatekeeper you three seem to be evolving into?"

Kelly: "I love it. Look, for years now, it's just been too easy for managed fighters to get ranked. A little payoff here, a wink there, a cupcake or two in the ring and the girl gets a digit beside her name - it's ridiculous. We're putting Katie to the test - a real test - and more fighters should have to face the same fire. That's going to mean more fights for me and the others, and we're going to ruin some finely laid plans, let me tell you."

BLONDE! Mag: "Follow up question: who's prettier, you or Katie and do you feel that will be a factor in the fight?"

Kelly: "Me - I'm prettier - but no, it won't be a factor. Katie's used to being the ho-hum girl in the ring, always letting her opponent supply the glamour. It obviously doesn't bother her at this point."

During R1: Get to know you round - girls loping in a loose clockwise circle, feinting, working behind the jab. Katie scowling prettily; Kelly serene, almost sneering. Kelly doubling up nice on poke, leaning in to pound right hands against Katie's chest as Holmes is withdrawing. Frequent tie-ups see lanky lasses pushing and struggling - elbows coming up - shoulder-blades poking out and grinding away with effort. Ref warning girls for incidentals during these moments.

R2: More rangy action - girls spanking away jabs from wide stances; keeping it outside. Katie working on Kelly's left eye this round, bouncing left hands off it. Katie leaning in and spanking a hard right hand off the body occasionally, backing Kelly up with a grimace.

R3: Holmes stalking - jabs setting up sloping right hands into Kelly's body: blonde starting to shy away. Minute mark - Katie doubles the jab, but springs the right hand at Kelly's chin, crossing up Rutherford's defences: head swivel, blonde and DOWN GOES KELLY! Pinpoint, straight blast - Katie driving righty off the shoulder, drops Kelly to all fours - skips quickly to neutral corner. Rutherford up chagrined - legs a little buzzed: Katie's wiry pulse making an impact early.

R4: Holmes with a good follow up - getting comfy with her girl. Jabs starting to lump Kelly up nicely, starting to dictate where she can go, what she can do. Katie stepping in, always menacing with the cocked right hand: Kelly flinching or covering up prematurely, giving up her body to Katie's rangy hook. Good step-and-poke from Katie - nothing fancy, just managing her blonde, breaking her down in stages through 4.

R5: Hard Katie right cross jerks Kelly a quarter turn to blonde right: RUTHERFOD'S DOWN! Kelly on all fours - mouth open in astonishment: she's not just shaking this one off. Katie jogging pretty to neutral corner - tassles tossing: she fidgets with her ponytail while watching Kelly rally off the mat. Rutherford: hurt, woozy, leaning against ropes - ref waves Katie in. Holmes sets up in wide stance - weight on left foot: she's pounding away jabs at Kelly's prepared defences, looking to place sudden right crosses, then come back the delayed, rangy hook in Kelly's ribs. Really just a punching clinic for Katie: we're seeing her turn her hips into shots; we see the relaxed hands-at-chest ready position she uses - springing the punches off her shoulders all elastic. Kelly blocking with a high guard, rotating her torso to move her head: pretty good pocket defence, but down the stretch, Katie penetrates. Straight right splits Kelly's mitts, punching her head back - Rutherford's knees give way and she's on all fours before she knows what's going on. Katie yelping "Yep!" with pleasure - jogging all smiles to neutral corner as Kelly looks her age through 5.

R6: Holmes presses; Rutherford stiffens. Telling exchange early sees Kelly have the last word: ringing left hook to chin as Katie's backing out, buckling Holmes' long legs. Blonde stepping into brunette ribcage with digging rights and lefts - good bouncing work being done, forcing Katie to clinch at the ropes. Midring - Kelly reverses the tide of Katie's jab - getting the better of the brunette at range.

R7: Katie presses to put down the rally: Rutherford again denies her. Kelly's jab spiting Katie's face, knocking at Holmes' beauty, setting up the first hard right hands to Katie's chin. Holmes well-struck, stepping out: Kelly pursuing aggressively, stepping in strong on the left foot to lash hooks to Katie's liver. Kelly opening up, turning on her shots, getting more hip and back into them: Katie's feeling it, starting to lump up and get cranky through 7.

R8: Brisk right/left/right strafes Katie's chin early - Kelly delivery with straight, smooth criss-cross: Holmes trots out of the sequence hurt, staggering to ropes. Kelly walking Katie down, jabbing her to get her covered up, then lashing her a sidearm right loud across the body. Grimace from Katie - she flinches, doubles over, looking to slip-roll the incoming: Kelly adjusts nicely, sliding left and right uppercuts through the middle to scrape at Katie's pate. Katie leans back against ropes, takes a wide slapping hook and a straight right hand on the mouth: Holmes clinches again as knees give way under determined Rutherford punching. Kelly not heavy handed - but busy and persistent - she's pushing Katie into ropes to keep hands free, going to the body with slender armed whacks, and diligently working over Katie's head and defences with sleek criss-cross.

R9: Hot two way tossing as limber lasses plant and throw. Katie firming, punching harder (especially with the right hand) Kelly's coming off second best in trade. Rutherford stubborn - getting her face punched, but hanging in there and answering back. Makes for crowd pleasing stuff as girls extend on rangy power shots and stiff jabs to paste each other - but Katie's more vigorous, more energetic at this point.

R10: Same again: Katie convinced Kelly can't hurt her any longer - goes right at the blonde to initiate ruinous trade. Rutherford's reserves clearly shallower than Katie's: blonde can't afford punch-for-punch attrition now. Holmes smitten plenty as Kelly gives ground wily, walking Katie's face onto stern right hands - but Katie's legs hold firm, weight on left (front) foot as she bangs away left/rights in criss-crossing strafing runs. Down the stretch, Katie seals the deal with a delicious three punch combo of straight lefts and rights up the middle - just sliding her fists onto Kelly's face to startle and stun the blonde at bell. Comes back UD10, Katie Holmes.

After: Holmes scuffed and busted up - she shows class after acrimonious prefight - cupping Kelly behind her head and sincerely acknowledging a good hard fight from the veteran. Rutherford disappointed and downcast - but she took 4 rounds from Katie and outboxed the BSE vixen on occasion: that's nothing to sneeze at. "The better woman won," Kelly shrugs, wistful in defeat. "What else can I say?"
