WHERE FOUGHYT L.A.

Quote: “I beat Catherine Bell this year,” Shannon reminds reporters. “Right after that fight, I told my trainer I was ready for Theron.”

SYNOPSIS: This was a fight that was heavily influenced by the fights which had immediately preceded it. Elizabeth had qualified for the second round with one of the most brutal, unforgiving punching contests of the year and she was clearly still feeling the effects of the gutwrenching effort it took to win that fight. In contrast—Theron had sailed into the second round untouched, barely worked up a sweat in the process of battering Milla Jovovich into a KO1 defeat. A fresh blonde legend: a shopworn, but eager brunette upstart—Shannon’s work was clearly cut out for her.

Both girls elected to fight stand-up, flat-footed, set-piece battles—stepping methodically clockwise, working behind heavy jabs to break down opposition defences, Right from the first, it was apparent that this straightforward gunboat battle was favouring Theron: sghe soaked a gorgeous Elizabeth right cross in the opening minute and grinned back at Shannon in response. By the final minute, Charlize was backing Shannon up with the jab, and had the brunette’s lower lip cut. Things would worsen for the plucky brunette, as Charlize was clearly the fresher vixen prancing back to her corner for the break.

Three straight Theron shutouts followed—CT loose-limbed, grinning, stepping briskly into her stance and getting off with crisp, snapping punches. Elizabeth looked chastised, drained—she followed Charlize with bold intentions, but found herself routinely pre-empted, busting up from Theron’s triumphant jab. With Shannon’s head banging back every dozen seconds or so—Theron went to the body with lanky gusto, bunching her foe up with stricken expressions and wilting legs. The end came in the fourth a CT faded back from a pawing Elizabeth jab, then lunged forward with a crushing right hand pull-counter, sending the demoralized brunette to her face with a sickening limp collapse. KO4 in spectacular fashion: Charlize advanced to the Paramount finals.

BEST MOMENT, SHANNON: First round, working behind a sharp, doubled up poke to Charlize’ lips—Shannon leaned in and stroked Theron a textbook right cross against the chin. Charlize took a big step back step back, but grinned, nodding in acknowledgement of a blow well struck, while dismissing it at the same time.

BEST MOMENT, CHARLIZE: That gorgeous right hand pull-counter fight winner. A hurting Shannon hung her jab as CT fade-stepped out of range, then Theron stepped back in, dropping her right out and down, pulling it up and around to crack-chip the left side of Shannon’s face. Out on her feet—Elizabeth collapsed straight down onto her knees—cheek wet against the canvas, butt in the air as the ref rushed in to push Theron back.
