Thinking man’s bout pits newcomer Maggie G against Ms. Paltrow and it’s a surprising no contest. Paltrow goes down 3 times, gets her nose bloodied and leaves the ring with a snazzy new shiner, prompting some in the know to call Gyllenhaal the best talent to come out of the indy scene since Kristen Dunst.

Gyllenhaal not particularly quick or flashy, but strong on her feet, well balanced and sporting a smooth delivery, easy weight transition as she shifts into and out of punches. Ri8ght hands rung up and hurt Gwyneth all night--Maggie grooving ‘em in, turning over the back foot pretty as she curled into the shots. Hook and jab nothing special, but both landing with pleasing heft--Paltrow apparently outgunned in exchanged and looking grouchy after absorbing firm body blows. Most appealing: the bright, effervescent smile Maggie wore throughout--punching with carefree abandon, hurting Gwyneth and loving it--Gyllenhaal a breath of fresh air with so many grim-faced warriors around.
