Keri straight faced and reserved at the podium. After a resurgent 2014, she’s hit a tough road as an independent this year. “It’s been hard without a stable. Every girl knows that. But Diamond and Benny wanted to go another way, try a different version of a stable. And all the girls that fought so hard for Diamond… we were all cut loose. I haven’t had a fight since…” She stares off in the middle distance. Eyes narrowing for a moment as she realizes how hard it’s been. “But part of being a world-class boxer is being ready when the call comes. I wasn’t surprised to hear from Benny. He said he’d try his best to get us some work if we needed it.” She gestures to Anna. “Here’s the work. I don’t know what Benny sees in her. Five girls seem better than one to me. But what would I know? I’m just an independent…”

Anna steps to the podium. “I know how hard it is to be out there as an independent. To not have someone in your corner making your fights, getting you training, promoting you. And that’s why I’m so grateful to have that support now. And it’s why I’m going to give my everything in that ring, every single time. To know that all of Diamond Boxing Club’s resources are focused on ME… that’s a big responsibility! They see something in me. Something special. And I’m not going to stop until the world sees it too!”

Keri disrobes revealing a classic, sporty bikini in green. She bangs her gloves together as she waits for Kendrick. In the opposite corner, Anna takes in a big deep breath, clearly nervous for her first bout with DBC. “No turning back now…” She throws off her robe, showing off a purple halter-top two-piece. Kendrick is a bundle of nerves as she bounces in her corner. The girls come to center ring. A steely eyed staredown ensues as neither girl wants to give an inch. A quick touch of gloves and we’re ready for the bell.

R1: Keri comes out with a respectful curiosity. What does Benny really see in this kid? Anna’s guard looks solid at first glance. Eyes bright and shining. Keri just can’t wait, starting out with her standard regimen of jabs. One. Two… OOFF! Anna times her counter perfectly! Ducking under the jab to thud home leather on Keri’s taut tummy. A little smirk spreads on Russell’s lips. Of course the new Diamond girl knew her moves. But before she can figure out a new plan, Anna leaps forward. A little jab, dig, cross scares Keri back to the ropes, where Kendrick starts to pile up the points this round. Russell is rolling with it well, throwing back where she can. But as the bell rings, Anna Kendrick has won her first round with Diamond. And Keri has just one short minute to regroup.

R2: Russell all business on her stool. You can see her mapping out a new blueprint. She rises fast, getting on the front foot and smothering Anna before she can get off. Kendrick hasn’t seen this look from her opponent. Her eyes are wide as Anna tries to cover up against this assault. But Keri is too fast, too good to let Kendrick off the hook. Hard hearted blows trap Anna in her corner, Russell just teeing off on the young boxer. Kendrick pouting as she’s taking the heat. Will the kid just wilt? NO! She fires back hard, lips curled in a feisty sneer. She’s no one’s punching bag, and the resulting firefight brings the crowd to their feet! Ref almost misses the bell, and bravely dives in to separate the fighters. Keri’s aggression probably gets her the points and we’re all square through two.

R3: Anna get a scolding on the stool. WAY too early to trade with a girl as fit as Keri Russell. So Kendrick returns to the jab, trying to put together little combinations to land the big punches. But Keri’s defense is solid. Great two way stuff in the center of the ring! With leather landing to tummies, chests, and cheeks. Anna backs off, buying space... before springing forward, and smothering Keri with high density output! Russell rides it out well, but the die is cast at the bell. Anna takes the points with her late charge.

R4: Kendrick manages a smile in her corner. She’s winning the fight and feels like she has a handle on her opponent. Despite her attitude, Anna is a bit slow to rise at the bell. Breathing deep as she surveys the task in front of her. Anna starts to circle the ring. Feinting and stepping as she looks for her moment. Keri too experienced to take the bait. She’s jabbing. Measuring. Finally closing on Kendrick... But she’s SLAMMED by a big hook coming the other way! Kendrick loaded up on a hook that crunched Keri on the chin! Russell now on shaky legs! Covering up quickly as Kendrick wades in… then Keri explodes out of her crouch! Socking Anna in the guts! Both girls fall in, heads on shoulders. It’s all positioning as the girls jockey for position. Elbows and gloves searching for the right position. Keri manages to carve out a little pocket, shoveling pain into Anna’s breadbasket. Kendrick takes the beating like a champ, but Keri takes the round.

R5: Russell knows just how to slow down the little spitfire now. She eats a jab in order to get inside. Returning to the close quarters fighting that feels like a foreign language to Anna. She’s getting walked back towards the ropes as Keri surges forward. She’s gripping and clutching at Keri, but she’s not going for a referee break. Anna manages to shove Keri off, firing two solid shots before Keri dives back inside. Every time Kendrick has to push her girl back, she’s burning energy and losing sting in her punches. Keri grim faced and determined. She really wants to pound that young body. Her single-minded determination gets her the points, and the 48-47 lead through five rounds.

R6: Anna shaking her head in the corner. She can’t handle the in-fighting. Needs to return to her kind of fight. Use her legs. Pick her spots. That’s just what she does at the start of round six. Keri playing along with this strategy. Still coming forward. Still looking to crowd Kendrick and smother her inside. But this gives Anna an easy target, right in front of her. Russell is so much easier to hit if you don’t have to find her. Anna’s eyes widen and Russell closes space… Kendrick goes with a big body shot… followed by a HUGE overhand right! Keri is rocked by those shots, seeing stars as she fights hard to stay standing! Anna comes in hard, looking to put away her damaged prey… but Keri isn’t done yet! She slinging back leather hard! Anna looking to land the punch that might end the fight… but it never comes. Keri escapes the round, but the points go to Kendrick.

R7: Salts administered to Keri. She’s trying hard to shake it off, but she’s still foggy as she comes out for the seventh. Guard a little lower. Gloves a little farther apart. Anna’s eyes to wide as she sees her chance. Does Kendrick possess the killer instinct required to finish the job? She’s coming forward hard, but Keri is rolling and riding it out like a pro. The punches are coming back from Russell, but they are wild and unfocused. And the more she swings, the more windows she creates. Anna is all sweat and lather as she won’t stop punching! She’s got the pedal to the metal… and Keri starts to wilt! Ref hovering… but he’s not needed! Anna Kendrick lands a big hook to the body… followed by an uppercut right on the button! Keri’s head snaps back as she clutches her violated guts. She’s down, and Kendrick is jumping for joy. Keri SO hurt as she writhes on the canvas. And THE COUNT PASSES HER BY! Your winner by KO7 is ANNA KENDRICK!!

AFTER: Anna filled with uncontained jubilation. Visiting each corner and jumping up on the turnbuckles to wave and smile at the crowd. She’s all smiles as she poses for photos, flexing and raising her gloves. Keri slowly up off the mat, returning to her stool and getting a towel draped over her head. She sits quietly with her gloves on her knees as she recovers. Reporters over quickly to get a statement.

“The kid can fight.” Keri says, ashen faced. “Anna is a good boxer and she got me tonight. I thought is was an even fight. If we fight ten times, we might each win five. But tonight was hers. I do want to thank Benny for setting up the match. He’s still trying to take care of me even though I’m not a Diamond girl anymore. I hope the league has seen what I can do, and I hope to get another match soon.”

Kendrick all bubbly smiles as she steps to the mic. “I can’t believe I knocked her out! Keri is just… she’s such a great boxer! And I knew it was going to be a tough fight. But I trained so hard for this. I really wanted to show everyone that I can be a great flyweight. And, with this KO, I guess that’s what I did! I’ve got a lot more work to do, but I’m already itching for another fight!”
