Before: Fight held in Phoenix, Arizona, following the Arizona Cardinals last pre-season game; part of a gala weekend of sports celebration marking the start of college and pro football and the end of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball season and the primary election season.
Hilarie Burton, the 5'9", sinewy, 28 y/o vet had disappeared off the FCBA radar for the past few years after losing three of four fights in 2008-2009 (the fourth? A draw with lightweight Laura Vandervoort.) Understandably, Hilarie jumped at a chance to get back into action, especially with a high visibility opponent like Oscar winner, Penelope Cruz.

The 36 y/o Cruz, 5'5", is giving away both age and height to Burton; but Cruz' edge is experience - winning 4 fights in the same two year period that Burton was shut out of the win column.

"I don't think 'activity' is any kind of predictor of success," Burton harrumphs. "There's lots of fighters get fights simply because they CAN'T win. That's no recommendation. I'll win because I'm a fighter everyone goes out of her way to avoid, rather than someone they can't wait to face."
Cruz, bristling at the implied put down, isn't backing down from a confrontation. "I fought Longoria - didn't see her on Burton's resume! I hopped on a plane and flew to Australia, had four tough fights - didn't see Burton down there either. Seems to me, Hilarie Burton's been the one tippy-toeing around 'tough fights' instead of her opponents. We'll see who hits harder and who's quicker when we're in the ring facing one another. Talk never won a fight!"

Cruz in a tiny, European style, black bikini, black gloves; Burton, electric blue bandeau top, boy-cut shorts, white gloves.

During R1: Fight unexpectedly delayed when the Sheriff shows up ringside, demanding to see Cruz' passport. Her seconds have to scurry around, tearing up the locker room, eventually find it and satisfy the law. When the bout finally gets underway, it's Burton turn to spring a nasty surprise; nimbly circling Cruz, staying off the ropes and putting Penelope back on her heels time and again with a crisp, quick, left jab. Cruz using her quickness, avoiding harm, but she's being out-jabbed and the frustration of it shows on her expressive, Oscar winning, face. She doesn't like it one little bit! Cruz unleashing the hook on occasion, but Burton behind the jab is controlling the pace of this, the opening round.

R2: Cruz into her groove; working her own jab this round. All crisp movement; gliding footwork almost like a Flamenco dancer, stomping in behind the left, swirling around, pounding in the ring, slipping gracefully away before Burton can answer effectively. Cruz leading Burton around the ring by the nose which seems attached to the end of Pene's left glove at times. One can almost hear the castanets clicking as Cruz moves, she's so fluid and graceful, mixing it up; jabbing to the head and body, pivoting to create angles, tattooing Hilarie's face and body with combinations. Shutout Cruz.

R3: Another shutout for Cruz. Penelope's way too classy for Burton when she's on her game. Everything working for Cruz starts with her terrific jab, then she follows with the left hook and right cross, often alone and sometimes in combination. Burton baffled early; crowd murmuring. This was NOT what they'd paid good money to see! Some unsettling shouts such as, "C'mon Hil, tear her tits off!", "Gut that spic!" and "Deport the beaner bytch!" are heard before the FCBA broadcast's crowd mics suddenly and mysteriously suffer what was later described as an 'electronic malfunction.' Cruz seems oblivious to the crowd; working steadily behind the jab; shaking Burton several times with solid combination connects. Cruz in control after three rounds.

R4: Shutout Burton. Hilarie's corner gives her an earful and she stiffens up her jab this round; stapling it into Penelope's face. Hilarie with a forward aspect now, right heel up off canvas, pushing off; weight her front/left leg. Leggy Burton using her length better, snapping her jabs as in the first round. Combined with her improved footwork, Burton's jab setting up a sliding, long, right hand that lands firm to Cruz' chin. Cruz disconcerted, disheveled; she's being treated rudely this round and it shows in her beautiful and expressive face. Brow furrowed, Cruz struggles to re-establish her jab, but the longer-armed Burton is able to maintain her distance using her own jab and her long legs to create space; space into which Hilarie pours combinations that rock Cruz back, rebuffing her attempts to get in close where she can work Burton's body.

R5: Cruz ups the tempo. Penelope stops trying to circle Burton and comes right at her this round, busting up the middle, taking the jab high on her head in exchange for gaining distance. Once she is inside, Cruz back to what she does best; hooking the body and coming up to smack Hilarie's head off her jab. Burton struggling to push Cruz off her, but Pene won't be denied. THE BLONDE GIRL GOES DOWN! Midway through the round, Penelope catches Hilary trying to match quickness and Cruz beats the blonde with a short, snappy, left-right combination that sends Burton reeling backward to the ropes. As she comes off, Cruz with a sweet uppercut that drops Hilarie on her butt! Burton shaking her head, quickly to one knee and takes the eight with her arm across her thigh, standing and nodding to the ref she's 'OK' with her gloves at her chin. Cruz in quickly to finish, but Burton retreating in good order, flicking the defensive jab to steer Cruz aside as Hil legs out of danger. Final minute, Burton back over to offense, sticking her jab and returning to her rangy, leggy, mode of before. Cruz unable to close the deal and Burton boxes her way to the bell without further harm. Bell: Burton showing her pluck, resilience as she appears undeterred by the knockdown. Cruz grumpy, perhaps a bit discouraged she couldn't roll blondie up when she had her hurt.

R6: SIGNIFICANT: Burton comes off the knockdown with renewed fire and vigor. Cruz trying to pad her lead gets overly aggressive; her Armada running aground on the shoals of Burton's jab; eating long, smooth right hands to the chin in the exchanges. Burton sitting down on her power punches this round, Cruz using her sewing needle jab to set up her combinations. Both women inflicting damage on the other as first one, then the other lands heavy blows. Neither looking to back up and several times both surge forward at the same time, resulting in exchanges that are made in a phone booth size area at center ring. Final minute, Burton lands two big right hands in combination without any answer from Cruz. Hilarie narrowly takes the most hotly contested round of the fight - and judging from the fan reaction, the most entertaining.

R7: On comes Burton: Hilarie quickly establishes her long, straight, jab; dropping the right on Cruz in follow-on. Cruz rocked early, staggered, earmuffing with her butt on the ropes. Cruz comes off the ropes behind a good left hook that backs Burton off, but her right misses and Hilarie lands a left of her own. CRUZ IS HURT! Penelope's form breaking down as Burton tattoos her with straight one-two's really drilling in the hurt when she has Cruz in trouble! Burton goes all in; pounding away with both fists. DOWN GOES CRUZ! DOWN GOES CRUZ! Crowd roaring, on their feet as bleached blonde Burton guts Penelope with the left, then slams her face down at her feet with a driving, downward right flush on the jaw! Pene sprawls starfished and she's not getting up. KO7 Hilarie Burton.

After: Devastating! Shocking! Surprise stoppage as Cruz was ahead on all the cards when Burton applied the 'Hilarie Hammer' to end her evening. Simguy, seen on TV in his luxury box, pulling his hair out in frustration. "What's it going to take to get Penelope Cruz wins on US soil?" he's seen mouthing aloud, probably to himself because everyone else is staring at the pulchritudinous Penelope prostrate in the ring.
To answer Simguy's question: whatever it's gonna take! Clearly, Penelope won't fight in Arizona again anytime soon; the state's proven too inhospitable: from authorities throwing her off her game with that gambit right before the bell; to fans booing her from the introduction right on through to the standing ovation for Burton's KO. Then there was Burton herself with that surprise KO! Not nice a'tall.
"She's got quick hands," Burton tells the press afterward. "You gotta control her with the jab, not let her get to your body or you're in for a long evening. I was able to use my height and length for the most part and when I did, it was an easy fight. I'm a full grown woman now, in fact I had to work to make bantam weight. Poor Pene's just a plumped up flyweight, really; although like a fine Spanish wine, with some years of aging she's developed a helluva body," Hil snarks.
Cruz downcast, but brave, facing a hostile media. "I don't know what to say," she sighs heavily. "I knew coming in this was going to be a difficult fight, she's a lot heavier then in the videos Cat showed me from their days at TE. But I knew that, just not how much. She has a terrific jab and it gave me trouble all night; I never really was able to get settled into a rhythm and, as you know," she grinned. "... for us Spaniards it's all about the rhythm method."
Asked about her plans for the future, Cruz shrugged. "I'll talk to Ginny about it. Maybe somebody from Front Street? Jamie Lynn Spears? Nicole Scherzinger? I dun't know, we'll talk it over and come up with a name or two. There's plenty of girls out there at fly and bantam who'd be good for me. We'll find someone, don't worry. I just won't be back to Arizona any time soon."
