10 round Draw

Sometimes, it doesn't pay to be a huge star in an FCBA event. Zeta Jones' Diva routine in prefight lit a fire under Denise that Richards' fans haven't seen in years. Denise would get a truly rocketing start in this fight, battering Zeta Jones pillar to post and forcing Catherine to delve deep into her bag of nefarious tricks to reel in her blonde.

The first three rounds were huge Denise Richards stanzas and in retrospect, if the judges dropped the ball, they dropped it here in not awarding Richards 10-8 rounds in the first and second. Jones was hurt to the chin, hurt to the body and hounded along the ropes - Denise keeping up a steady barrage of right crosses and left uppercuts, then dropping down to hook the ribcage in methodical fashion. In the fourth and fifth - Jones started to chip away, still being bullied and outworked, but hooking Richards well amidships, clinching to slow the pace and starting to warm Denises's trunks with nifty, cuffing swats in close. Time and again, Denise's hips would shunt back from a Jones hook down low - Richards lips would part, a breathy moan would escape and it was apparent that Catherine was slowly rewriting the script after 5.

The final five rounds were as wide for Catherine as the first five had been for Denise as Jones' body work started to wick the energy out of her blonde, lowering the tempo in Catherine's favour. Jones worked her jab, stepped to the side, potshotted and clinched - and when inside, she did extra damage tummy and trunks with economical cruelty. As Richards' fury abated, her expression grew shopworn, increasingly ragged, and the blonde found herself often pulled off balance or walked around as Jones' hampered her opponent's footwork to good effect. Cheek-by-jowl, Richards simply wasn't as compact or efficient with the veteran British minx, and Jones did a good job of insuring the fight never strayed from the trenches in the latter half.

So: the wild and wooly slugging outside saw Richards dominate - the crafty inside swiping went to Jones. If one woman could be said to have been lucky to receive the draw, it was surely CZJ: Richards landed all the thunder and could have been awarded the decision on that basis. Still, you have to hand it to Jones - only a boxing-savvy veteran could have withstood the pounding and rewritten the terms of this fight the way she did.
