Before: Di in demand, shrugging off a few pounds to meet Jessica in Lane’s second title bid in as man fight. HBO impressed with Di’s near-miss against Electra, and Alba looking for a tough optional defense to keep her sharp--looks like a win/win/win all around. Alba’s looked awesome and she’s looked beatable--she needs to step up and slap Lane down to live up to her press. Lane just has to win, not look good a lot of people like her chances for an upset. Lane in navy aerobics two piece--Alba in red.

During R1: Dian with pressure to start, taking a shot early at catching the youngster cold. Hands at her temples, Di walks Jessica down, answering every punch from Alba with a sizzling hook or chopping right hand. When Di doesn’t pay for real estate, she rams Alba with her guard, hooking Jessica as she falls back--it’s a rough, effective look for Diane as she pounds the smirk off Alba’s face this round.

R2:Alba shakes off the doldrums and gets her legs moving this round, easily circling on the balls of her feet, stepping in and out and making Lane adjust. With Lane framing her face in the high guard, Alba stamps that frisky left jab in between the mitts, pursing her lips and exhaling loudly as she gets off, then steps right. Lane can’t cut down the ring and it costs her midway through: Jessi pumping jabs, follows up with a banging right hand right between Lane’s mitts to stun the challenger--Alba reloading, drifts another straight right up the middle and rocks Di wobbly butt with the follow up left hook. Lane hurt, shifts to counter punch mode--right hand at her cheek, left at her gut and slips side to side as Jessica advances, Great power boxing round from Jessica shows her hand and foot speed as lane goes back to her corner with a hurtin’ shine on her face.

R3: Jessica comfortably leading--Di countering, lane retreating, right hand under her chin, left hand across her body as she turns her left shoulder towards the opponent--Di bending at the waist to slip the right hands well enough, but that pounding jab is still spanking home. Lane effective shooting straight right hands out from her chest to Alba’s face or breasts--but Jessica’s controlling the tempo, bossing Lane around and deciding when and where the girls will trade.

R4: Cat and mouse continues with Alba dropping her hands, confident that her feet can get her out of range at the first sign of trouble. Jessica circling, rolling her hands, using shoulder feints then lifting the jab into Lane’s face at will, Jessica sitting on that right hand, slipping in underneath when Alba throws, and countering hard with left hands o the nubile brunette’s ribcage. Once again, Lane probably can’t count on the judges with her defensive posture, but she’s taken Alba’s power out of the equation at least.

R5: Di opening up a little at the urging of her hands, knows she can’t give away rounds to the tireless little dynamo in front of her. Hands at her temples, Lane bobs up and down, trying to time her hook and catching Alba plenty on the jab as Jessica looks to slug. Jessica happy to take if she can land, and she starts piling up right hands on Lane’s pretty face as the crowd roars in approval, Back and forth sniping sees both women eat shellacking blows. Down the stretch, Alba lifting the left off her hip to jam it in between Diane’s eyes, Lane buckling forward then pitching to her backside AND SHE CAN’T BEAT THE COUNT! KO5 Jessica Alba as Diane’s legs flop side to side, face twisted in stunned agony while Alba preens in victory.

After: Alba screaming “I dressed her UP!” and mugging for the cameras afterward has her most convincing performance to date, positioning herself for a lucrative Shannen Doherty fight don the road, Lane disappointed, but plucky, taking the loss in stride and feeling good overall with the effort. When asked to assess the young champion, Diane is gracious: “She’s very good, very quick. I don’t know that she’s the hardest hitter I’ve faced at this weight, but I didn’t see the punch the punch that stopped me and that’s just as good as sheer power. I basically couldn’t catch up to her--all that stuff in pre-fight I figured she’s come out banging, but she mixed it up well. She’s got a bright future,” And so does Lane from the sounds of it as other interested champs at 110 look to stopover at the versatile brunette en route to the big dances ahead.
