HBO BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE

Posted by Simguy on Saturday, 08-May-1999 10:45:46

Before: Vitriolic bout as two normally reserved women get into one another’s faces at the weight in. Courtney is incensed at Fox’s rating Anderson above her pound for pound, and enraged that the network has granted Anderson a bogus “Super Bantamweight” title. Anderson clearly livin’ large after the Lopez bout, comes in with a little chub around her neck, belly and bottom. Red adidas terrycloth trunks and black jog bra for Gillian, teal bottoms and white jog bra for Courtney.

During R1: At center ring, Courtney busts Gillian up with a curling, short overhand right to the eye, then rips three left hooks to the gut and Anderson is hurt! Gillian squaring up, blank expression is battered by very sharp 3 punch combinations from the blonde. Courtney keeps up the pace, hammering away with power punches, and she catches Gillian stumbling forward with clipping left uppercuts to the cut the red head inside the mouth. Anderson is shell shocked, trying to put her head on Courtney’s chest, but the blonde is too nimble, stepping back and rocking Anderson with hooks and uppercuts. A double left hook breaks Gillian down and her guard falls as she leans forward. Courtney plows away, ripping lefts and rights to the jaw of Anderson and GILLIAN DROPS TO THE CANVAS. Stunning KO for Courtney Thorne-Smith as she demolishes Gillian Anderson in the first.

After: Uncharacteristic display of bravado from Smith as she climbs the ring posts in triumph and plays to the crowd as Anderson is helped to a stool. Too much speed too soon for the champ, who never got on track or landed so much as a poke in this one.
