Before: Barrymore notorious for her club fighting days, coming up through the LA bar scene as have Carmen Electra, Jenny McCarthy and others. Danes a more traditional type fighter, will have to be sharp to offset Barrymore’s traditional strong starts.

During R1-2: drew comes out flying, tons of jerking head movement, bouncing around ala Vinni Pazienza, and when she comes in, it is behind a curtain of clubbing, wide lefts and rights to the body and head. Danes outgunned early, can only cover up and try to keep her composure. Barrymore shutout in both rounds, puts wear and tear on Danes without fear of reprisal.

R3: Claire opens up this round, but doesn’t seem to have much snap in her punches. Circling to her left, she pushes a left at drew’s gut, then pats the blonde’s face without vigour. Barrymore in contrast, sets her feet, and comes back with sharp hooks, trying to counter the jab, and midway through the round, she rocks Danes following a lazy jab from Claire, and the slender blonde takes a seat. Danes beats the counts, but is bullied to the ropes and hammered to the bell.

R4: Claire obviously still shaken, shows a little backbone this round, jabbing with more conviction and startling Drew with the short right uppercut inside. Barrymore drops her first round as Danes has some luck with the stick and move outside.

R5: Clare starts well, but fades quickly, and midway through the round, Drew is having her way once again, Barrymore banging the flanks of her opponent with both hands, jerks her body in behind a sudden uppercut to break Danes’ form. Drew pursues with running punches as Danes clatters around the ring on numb legs, and Barrymore finally runs Claire to ground with a right hand off the top of the head. Danes lays in an exhausted heap and cant get off her back—KO Drew Barrymore in 5.

After: In club fighting, where there is no ref, no time keeper, just a bunch of howling drunken spectators and a line of waiting challengers—it pays to start strong and keep punching until your opponent can’t fight any longer, and certainly Drew typifies the all-out bar style. Danes outgunned, and intimidated throughout much of the bout, basically quit rather than take 5 more rounds of abuse.
