 Ariana Grande vs. AJ Lee
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

A pair of quick, athletic exotics, and it's immediately apparent that neither has any respect for the other. "Lee's about to find out,' says Ariana with a smile, "That we don't fake stuff around here. When I hit her, she's really going to feel it. And, when I finish her, she's really going to be unconscious."

"Grande talks a good game," says a hard-eyed AJ, "But, she's just a little girl with a big head, not a real athlete like me. This might be my first official FCBA fight, but I've been in a lot of rings in my career, and I've been under the bright lights plenty of times. It's not going to be too big for me. But, I'm going to be too good for Ariana."

ROUND ONE:

Grande, of course, all about the quickness, the speed, the movement. She's very athletic and knows how to use that athleticism to her advantage. But, what happens when the other girl is as athletic as you are, if not more so? That's not an issue Grande's going to run into very often, but she's staring right down the barrel of it in this one, and it's a problem. Grande's used to being able to get to her spots almost at will. Not against Lee. Grande's used to being able to beat girls to punches. Not against Lee. Grande's used to being able to out-leg her opponent. Not against Lee. Add in the fact that AJ is a couple of inches taller and has a bit of reach, and the result is a flustered Grande, who's thrown onto the defensive and kept there the entire round. She simply can't get launched, can't get anything going. Instead, it's AJ with quick jabs, great feet, and nice combinations, who's in total control from the opening seconds to the final bell. Grande's touched up, picked up, and a little scuffed up by the final bell. Lee is all smiles on her way back to the corner, enjoying a 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

AJ still mesmerizing Ariana. Grande just can't get her offense in gear. She's moving, covering up, backing up, circling, all defense, trying to find openings, but unable to do so. Lee confident, cool, smooth, showing a presence that belies the fact that this is her first FCBA fight. She's got a plan, and she's executing it. She's working a quick, accurate left hand, locating with it, and, when she does, getting off quickly with the right hand, building nice combinations that force Grande to back and cover. Ariana spending too much time waiting her turn, too much time with the guard high, too much time moving and angling, and not nearly enough time punching. AJ in an excellent rhythm by the final moments of the round, moving beautifully, executing beautifully, piling up points and leaving Grande searching for answers. As the bell rings, Ariana hasn't found any, and AJ's got a 20-18 lead.

ROUND THREE:

Grande beginning to adjust. She's finding ways to get to spots and getting off when she does so. AJ not slowing down, though. She's continuing to work, continuing to get leather home. And, the result of all this is some wonderful flyweight boxing, with both fighters using all their speed, quickness, and athleticism. Punches land, but punches are also slipped, ducked, and picked off. Both women feint beautifully, using head and hand movement to create openings, to wrong foot the other girl, and to use those brief opportunities to get leather home and pile up points. Lee lands a solid right about half way through that briefly tosses Grande back to the defensive, but Ariana rallies, landing some solid flurries in response, throwing Lee to the defensive for the first time. AJ doesn't stay there long, either, and we're quickly back to a war of movement with both fighters scoring well and getting their points. At the bell, it's close, but it's Grande, who's cut the lead to 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Now, it's Ariana getting on a roll. Grande finding a comfort level with Lee's speed, getting her geometry solved, using that solution to solve other problems. This is the Grande we're used to seeing when she's fighting well, all motion, all speed, all fast hands landing lightning-quick punches and agile legs getting her out of the way of retorts. It's good stuff from a girl who's barely more than a tyro herself, in just her eighth FCBA fight. Lee much more defensive in this stanza. She's still getting off, but Ariana's slowly but surely taking over boxing lead, leaving AJ to the counter and the odd times when she's able to get off first. Lee's landing in those situations, but Grande's the one now calling the shots. She's the one in rhythm. She's the one who's got just about everything working. And, it just gets better the later into the round she gets. By the final bell, it's all Grande, and she's evened the fight at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Grande back to work. She's aggressive. She's elusive. She's popping in and out, touching up Lee then slipping away before AJ can put together any rejoinders. Now it's Lee who's out of sorts, who seems to be a bit flummoxed and unable to get her offense going. AJ resolute, still trying, but not getting much leather home. Grande dancing, bouncing, snapping jabs. She's everywhere and nowhere. Everywhere Lee doesn't want her to be, and nowhere AJ can find her. Then, AJ finds her. A quick-strike, perfectly-timed right hand that lands just as Grande is popping forward and ready to flurry. Ariana stumbles to her right and nearly goes down, and Lee's immediately all in. AJ lets loose every gun she has, winging punches from everywhere at a gobsmacked Grande. Ariana's covering up, backing up, taking heavy fire and DOWN SHE GOES! Another right hand and Grande's dropped on her back. As the count reaches five, she rolls to her belly and pushes up to hands and knees, but immediately crumples back to the canvas, where she remains, face down, until well after ten. Your winner by KO5 in maiden-breaking fashion is AJ Lee!

AFTER:

Lee jubilant in victory. "I told you, she was all talk," says AJ with a wide smile. "She likes to go in there and dance around and pretend she's in some kind of music video. Well, like I said, I'm the REAL athlete, and I just showed you what happens when a real athlete and a wannabe meet. The wannabe tastes some canvas. She's the first, but she won't be the last. AJ Lee has arrived, and this who division ought to be quivering in fear...because it just saw the future!
