Rachel Bilson vs Anna Kendrick

Before:

Bilson riding a six-fight win streak before dropping in the first round of the flyweight tournament of 2014. This is her first action in the ring this year. Reporters ask if she’s expecting ring rust. “Not at all.” Bilson responds with confidence. “I’ve been in there with the best. THIS girl… she’s far from my level of competition. I’ll knock her out nice and gentle, then move on!”

Kendrick not impressed by this show of bravado. “There’s going to be nothing gentle in that ring.” Hard nosed stare from a girl on a two fight win streak of her own. “No hard feelings before or after, but once that bell rings, I’m coming after you.” A newfound hard-heartedness present in Anna’s tone. “Girls like Rachel had her chance, you know? They had their moment in the sun. She got all the fights she could handle and now she’s taken her foot off the gas. I won’t make that mistake. I appreciate every moment in that ring. And I’ll fight until SHE can’t take it anymore!”

Both girls seem excited as they bounce to the ring. But a switch flips when they meet for the refs instructions. Bilson GLARING down at her diminutive challenger. Kendrick glaring right back. Neither girl breaks the gaze. Seconds barely manage to separate without incident. Rachel shrugs off the robe to reveal a tidy purple battle bikini. Anna in a more conservative black two-piece. A noteworthy tactical choice from Kendrick: extremely tight trunks. Not only do they show off her assets, but they protect her against any waistband shenanigans from Bilson. Somebody read a scouting report...

R1: Bilson’s three inch height advantage is evident from the opening bell. She’s dictating distance. Stabbing that jab right at Kendrick. It’s a snappy, stinging punch, one Anna does well to avoid… mostly. While she is catching most of those punches on her gloves, Rachel manages to sneak some punches through, opening holes in Anna’s defense to land other, harder shots. Kendrick giving back best she can, looking to dig to body, trying to slow down Rachel’s distance attack. At the bell, both girls know they’ve been in a fight. Bilson’s aggression and initiative earn her the points.

R2: Intense looks in Anna’s corner. She knew this girl would be tough, but she has to find the extra intensity inside of her. Kendrick is off the stool quick, closing fast and staying busy. Great work rate from the smaller fighter. Leather flying fast and thick as Rachel gives ground, trying to solve this new puzzle. Anna keeps moving forward. Bilson smart enough to stay off the ropes and execute a fighting retreat. She’s finding her spots too. Rachel countering best she can, slicing through Anna’s defence to land on tummy or chest. But Kendrick’s initiative is solid. She’s undeterred by the resistance, constantly pressing forward. That snappy jab always in Bilson’s face. In the third minute, Anna starts adding in some heavier punches. Rachel catches a few, but Anna lands a few big shots to Rachel’s cheeks. At the bell, both girls breathing heavy as they pass to corners.

R3: Emphatic work in both corners. The girls in a staredown as the seconds ply their trade. Anna is out quick again. That smothering attack from the last round seemed to work for her… But this time Bilson is ready! She’s not backing down. Standing firm in the face of Kendrick’s aggression. Experience wins the exchanges, as Rachel lands a higher volume of punches and lands the heavier shots. Anna gets credit for her fighting spirit. Though she is losing the exchanges she is constantly coming back in for more. Anna’s desire to punch and slug is creating an action packed fight. The crowd lapping it up, loving the action, admiring the bravery of the smaller fighter. Rachel Bilson is a fan as well. Anna’s aggression means Rachel doesn’t have to hunt for her girl, just stand pat and hit her targets, which she is doing with great accuracy. At the bell, Rachel thrusts her glove to the sky. She owns the center of the ring. Big deep breath from Anna as she returns to her corner. Losing the exchanges has left her a bit scuffed up. And certainly left her behind on the scorecards.

R4: Bilson staring across the ring, lost in hate during the break. But Kendrick is listening intently to her trainers. Could a tactical change be in the cards? Both girls slow to close this time, perhaps stemming from a begrudging respect of each other’s power. Hesitance present in the ring for the first time. More head movements, more feints. Anna much more cautious than in previous rounds. She’s getting off in ones and twos and escaping at angles. Textbook stuff from the smaller girl. Rachel swinging at ghosts as Kendrick touches her up for points. But the dance can’t last forever. Bilson does manage to land some heavy blows to jug and tummy. Do the judges favor slick accurate punching, or ham fisted damage? Consensus seems to be that the points go to the busier fighter. All tied up through four.

R5: A gleam in Anna’s eye as she closes for round five. She thinks she’s got it all figured out. Darting in and scoring before dashing out before Bilson can catch her. While she is clearly leading the punch count, Rachel is keeping her composure well. Not chasing the smaller girl, and not getting off balance trying to chase her down. The round progresses like this until Anna is just a bit slow getting out of the danger zone. Bilson swings with a compact hook… and it clips Anna clean on the chin! Knocking her off balance and sitting her down! All that great work by Kendrick erased in the blink of an eye. Her face a mask of shock as the ref moves in to count. She takes a moment to catch her breath, before moving carefully to get up at 8. No lasting damage, but that late knockdown stole the points for Bilson.

R6: Anna recovers well during the break. Comes out fresh and feisty for the sixth. She’s knows she’s behind after the knockdown. And she’s determined to get those points back. HIgh volume attack from Anna! She’s non-stop as the leather just keeps flying at Rachel! Her best defense isn’t enough, and Bilson’s guard starts to break down. Rachel can’t clinch, can’t get away, and she’s completely outgunned...
Rachel flat footed now, starting to fall off the pace. Her hands pawing at Anna’s belt line, trying to control her girl by hooking the waistband… but she can’t do it! Kendrick completely focused on pouring in the tummy hurt! That painful pik pak pow! Anna pouring all in, hammering home punches to Rachel’s breadbasket. Bilson isn’t throwing back, still trying to grab and turn Anna. At the bell, the ref dives in to separate the girls. Kendrick a picture of snarling rage as she stomps away hot. Bilson cramping up from gutshot trauma. Staring off in disbelief at the punishment she just absorbed. Her seconds out quickly to guide her home. She’s a disheveled beauty as she eases down gingerly on to her stool.

R7: Kendrick is back inside quickly. Knows she has her girl hurt and needs to finish her off. Rachel looking ashen faced. SO used up. SO hurt by the constant attack. A little smirk flashes across Anna’s face. She can sense the quit bubbling up in her girl. Rachel leaning down on Anna, using her shoulders to keep herself upright. But she’s not wrapping up tight, and Kendrick continues to pump damage into Rachel’s breadbasket. Bilson sobbing now, cramping up badly as the ref hovers close. Kendrick ends with a flurry. Three bludgeoning shots to body followed by an uppercut to the chin! Bilson slides off to the side, collapsing to the canvas! One glove clutching her violated guts and the other outstretched above her head. The count rises… And Rachel doesn’t even make an attempt to rise! Your winner by vicious KO7… ANNA KENDRICK!!!

After:

Kendrick jubilant in victory, jumping on the ring ropes and raising her gloves to the crowd. She cruises by to check on Rachel briefly before returning to her own corner to celebrate. No walk. No taunting. Bilson brought around slowly, gently being helped to her stool, before exiting the ring without interview, surrounded by trainers and officials. Kendrick stands center ring, hands on hips accentuating those tight trunks as she speaks to the reporter. “Rachel is a tough girl. And she can really punch.” Anna gestures to her quickly forming bruises as evidence of Bilson’s punching power. “Obviously, she’s brave. It takes a fighter’s heart to get in the ring with me! I think the difference tonight was that I wanted it more than her. This is a new chapter in my career, and I won’t let anyone stand in my way!”
