BEFORE: Kate Upton has forged ahead to the top of lingerie models stock with her triumph in the inaugural JMDD tournament back in August and perhaps it takes a more experienced fighter than Karolina Kurkova to take her down from there. However the Czech model has her sights on the Ice Hotel crown currently occupied by former BBU nemesis Miranda Kerr beside the fact beating Upton would create shockwaves all across the FCBA community on the spot!
Kurkova's made a successful American debut by knocking Candice Swanepoel out six weeks ago but she realizes that won't make Upton lose her sleep and she needs to perform at her absolute best if she wants to justify her high prospects not only among the models camp but also in the lightweight division as a whole. Meanwhile Paris Hilton thinks this is the most lopsided match-up of the night and she expects Kate to annihilate Karolina well before half distance! That's a bold call even by Paris' standards!
Kate Upton wears an orange bikini with white stripes and black gloves. Karolina Kurkova wears a silver bikini set and blue gloves. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the lightweight division.
Round 1:
Karolina's not afraid to mix it up against the best but that was on the other side of the pond and Kate unloads a handful of leather early to bury the Czech FCBA upstart on the back foot very quickly; the JMDD champ bulldozes her way onto the body and gives Kurkova's ribacge a solid pounding before trying to slice the high guard but here's where she meets a solid defence and allows the older model to clinch her much to the crowd's dismay. There's little doubt MGM Grand is behind Upton who has all the tools to become FCBA's biggest selling name - if she's not done that already - and a series of jabs on the ribcage breaks the clinch and sends Kurkova butt-in-ropes down the stretch with the American looping an overhand galore to finally dig some leather into her opponent's face and at the bell Karolina looks to be up against it already!
Round 2:
Kurkova digs into her European experience to clinch the rampant American and that's not what the crowd nor the Lioness Club executives expected here but Kate truly doesn't leave much space to work with and she still manages to actually shove the Czech away showing supreme strenght; Kurkova settles in mid distance and loops a hooking response but only grazes the high guard and is forced into defensive circles before too long. Upton stalks her from side to side though and despite lacking a huge punch delivery to add to Karolina's woes, she easily outnumbers the older blonde for remainder of the round and confirms the pre-fight Hilton predictions to the full. The crowd is loving that!
Round 3:
More Upton pouncing that sends Kurkova on her heels; a heavy jabbing series on the midsection stalls the Czech mid ring but also bends her sideways after Kate rips into the liver area and has the Czech moaning in pain, the Lookout! rout continues thereafter as the welterweight trained Sports Illustrated heroine pounds the older blonde back to the ropes and tries to put her away in truly jaw dropping fashion... Kurkova's all covered up here until she almost headbutts Upton and briefly stops the onslaught; she rips a sudden hook on the ear and bursts into the American's chest moments later... Kate didn't expect that JMDD throwback and bends forward clattering into Kurkova's forehead but as she tries to regain her stance Karoline whacks her on the ear again AND SENDS DOWN ON HER SIDE to almost silence the Las Vegas crowd! "What the hell happened just there!", Missy Peregrym and Cassidy Freeman scratch their heads and Paris Hilton almost choked on her chewing gum too.... Upton's down but not out as she springs back upright and indicates she's all good... that was a highly unexpected knockdown that simply let Kurkova off the hook and ESPN would need to take another look at that... Karolina's relieved to stop the Upton show and escapes from the corner; she doesn't push with her efforts for remainder of the round even though Kate looks equally stunned as the whole MGM Grand!
Round 4:
The last thing the JMDD champion needs is to fall into some one punch haymaker wonder and the action stalls dramatically in the fourth with Kate understandably reserved in her approach and Karolina still unsure whether that knockdown was all down to luck or simply a clash of heads that rendered the SI blonde vulnerable. Whatever the reason the crowd is handed the least enjoyable round of the entire card as both fighters need time to soak up that shocking knockdown however that only plays into Lookout's hands and LCA coach Claudia Schiffer is all over Karolina's ear during the interval demanding immediate push before Upton resumes her bulldozing attire from the opening two rounds.
Round 5:
And here comes the Czech blast; Kurkova shows some superior footwork to dwarf Kate in close range and pummels around the elbows to spike the liver area that whips the SI model on her heels and dumps her into a rarely seen earmuff cover afterwards. Cue in vintage BBU from Karolina who slaps her way into bruising her foe's ribcage before escaping a swift response over the top Upton's just a touch late and predictable and once she is handed a JMDD treatment in close range, she struggles to shake the Czech model off; Kurkova whoops her jugs with a series of uppercuts before thumping one more on the chin and sagging a very hittable looking American on the ropes come the bell. So much for that Hilton prediction! MGM Grand is on the verge of a genuine upset!
Round 6:
Missy Peregrym has made her way into Kate's corner and it's clear the Lookout! crew is deeply concerned by the way this fight is going... We're back into a familiar Upton rampage though and Kurkova realizes very quickly she hasn't yet punished the younger blonde beyond her limits... Heavy slapping bounces off her ribcage and sends sideways again before an uppercut flurry rips into Kate's rack... the JMDD champ embraces the onslaught this time and sinks the Czech girl with a heavy right hook on the temple and moves upstairs for good snapping Kurkova's head and backing her into the ropes again... there's no clash of heads to break her stride again and she wades in between the high guard to punish both cheeks and leave the Czech model yelping in pain at the bell with Missy looking much more comfortable again and smiling back at Hilton and Trachtenberg in the stands: "We're back in!", she tells Cassidy Freeman but the fat lady hasn't sung yet!
Round 7:
The Upton comeback is short-lived, at least early in the seventh, since Kurkova throws some bombs over top which might be inaccurate on the long haul but threaten the one punch haymaker demise the JMDD champ is well aware of, she allows the Czech model to wear herself out and the fatigue begins to kick in despite plenty of effort. Kate remains unharmed by the spirited charge and just as Kurkova seeks some respite in mid distance, she gets whooped by a heavy barrage on the body and Upton does just enough to clip the chin as well sending the older blonde into defensive circles. She keeps her within striking range though and buries more jabs on the jugs before crashing into the liver area and bending the Czech woman forward with a loud gasp... HEAVY LEFT HAND nails Karolina on the ear before she knows it AND DOWN GOES THE CZECH MODEL tumbling flat on her back! Talk about a one punch haymaker as Upton lifts the roof here in MGM Grand! Kurkova's down and looking hollow in the eyes but still beats the count at eight.. Kate stares at her with visible disdain and romps to finish her off in style however the desperate earmuff cover survives the American drill even though Karolina's trapped butt-in-ropes during the remaining seconds and looks to be on the verge of her limits at the bell.
Round 8:
Indeed, Kurkova is visibly wounded after that heavy knockdown and has no agility in her to avoid a looming disaster she can barely land a punch in the eight while Upton simply dissects the high guard and adds bruises to that pretty Czech face in numbers, making up for the early lack of outright damage. Karolina's dumped onto the turnbuckle within seconds and fails to answer a rain of punches bursting her guard into pieces; cue in more welterweight presence from the JMDD champion and just past the one minute mark it's all over when Kate slams one cross hook on the mouth too many... KAROLINA SLIDES DOWN ON HER BACKSIDE in the corner and the ref doesn't even bother with the count! KO8 Kate Upton!!!
AFTER: Missy, Paris and Michelle give the Sports Illustrated heroine a standing ovation just like the rest of the audience and with Kate around the place one really has to ask 'Who needs Brooklyn Decker anyway?". Upton ticks off another highly touted opponent despite some naysayers pointing at the 130+ lbs experience that made it all that easier for her. That's perhaps true but the one-sided beatdown Hilton predicted before almost backfired straight into the Lookout's face after that shocking third round knockdown. One can't suspect Kate of underestimating her opposition and she shows a lot of sympathy to her fallen opponent by helping a dazed Kurkova off the canvas and escorting her to the LCA corner. Together with Yvonne Strahovski she forms one of the best if not THE best tag team duo in the heavier classes and makes everyone inside the arena wonder if sky is truly the limit for her prospects.
The Lioness crew doesn't seem much concerned over this result despite falling 2-4 behind on the cards especially that their #1 star fighter is about to enter the ring next and looks poised to improve her head-to-head record against Vanessa Hudgens to 3-0. And that would simply erase all the negative thoughts stemming from the largely expected Kurkova defeat.
Final result: Kate Upton Def Karolina Kurkova KO8.
