Leven Rambin vs. Elodie Frege (Site: Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA.)
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Contradictions, and not only in style, abound in this one. Frege is the girl who could, a slick boxer who struggled mightily with the physicality of the bantamweight division in the FCBA early in her career. Frege took beatings and loads of losses and became a joke in the minds of some. But, with persistence and patient management, she turned the corner and has become a dangerous opponent. Her record still isn't great, partly because of the early struggles, and partly because of the absolutely grueling schedule she's fought, but she's claimed enough prized scalps to prove to everyone she's for real. Rambin, on the other hand, started well, winning her first four FCBA fights, but she's 2-4 since, and has struggled despite having all the physicals you could ask for. She's athletic, long, and big for the weight with plenty of power, but she's lost some fights she was favored to win and currently sits not only at the bottom of Front Street's bantamweight pecking order, but at the end of the stable's bench. The fight, then, is a big one for both fighters, but for different reasons.

"I need this," says Leven with a nod. "She's the kind of quality win that will prove what I already know, that I can compete at a high level in this division."

"I had a tough start to this year," says Elodie with that lovely accent. "I was close, but couldn't get a win. But, I turned things around with Cruz, and I'll keep it going tonight."

Rambin, befitting her Texas roots, wears a cowgirl costume complete with ten gallon hat. Frege plays to her roots as well, in a sexy French maid outfit that she fills out nicely.

ROUND ONE:

Both girls used to having a reach advantage, but neither has much of one in this bout. Rambin taller by an inch, so she's got the slight edge, but, not so much that it matters. What DOES matter early is Leven's edge in power. She gets the long left on target, and uses follow on rights to back up the French beauty. It's the right that makes the difference, but the left that makes it happen. She preempts Frege with it, and gets her own offense going, while the Frenchwoman is forced to the counter. Elodie counters well, of course, because she's an excellent counter puncher, but she isn't able to do it often enough. Instead, it's Rambin who fights lead, grabs control and keeps it throughout the first round. Leven stays patient, doesn't try to do too much, simply keeps working an excellent fight plan and keeps landing that left. Frege remains patient as well, takes what Rambin will give her. But, Leven doesn't give enough for Elodie to avoid ceding the 10-9 lead to the younger woman.

ROUND TWO:

Elodie doesn't want to keep playing mid-ring. Instead, she engages in a slow retreat, backs to the ropes, and forms the pocket. Rambin's clearly trained for this, because she doesn't get overly aggressive, which, of course, is exactly what Frege wants her to do. Instead, Leven works solidly and smartly, using her jab even more to create openings for the right hand. But. Elodie is very, very slick in here, her pocket now, perhaps, second only to Britney's in the entire FCBA. She slips, blocks, fouls the aim, and counters. Always, she counters. The punches usually don't pack a wallop, but they land, and they score. It's good stuff from both fighters as Leven lays careful siege, and Elodie exacts as stiff a price as she can manage for Rambin doing so. Down the stretch, both fighters land good right hands, Leven's a straight right, Frege's a perfectly-placed counter. But, both shake off the results, and, at the bell, it's close to Frege, evening things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Rambin getting more comfortable attacking the pocket, but, Elodie could not BE more comfortable in it. The Frenchwoman all about movement, and subtlety. Her head is never quite where it is, it's always gone at the last second, or, a glove that wasn't in front of her face suddenly is. Or, the head slips behind a shoulder, which takes the brunt of a punch. It's pretty stuff, and plenty effective. But, Leven remains patient. The key is to work smart. To get punches home. Because, every miss leads to an opening for Elodie to counter. So, Rambin slows the pace, creates openings with feints as well as with punches, misses less, gives Frege less to counter. It's a near-run thing from bell to bell, with both fighters having moments of effectiveness and neither able to hurt one another. The slower pace, though, seems to favor the younger blonde because, when the bell rings and the points are counted, it's close, but Leven, and Rambin now leads 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Rambin rolling. She's not exactly solving Elodie's pocket defense, but she IS getting into a rhythm against it. The slower pace. More accurate punches leading to fewer opportunities to counter. Head and shoulder movement and feints to create openings. It's all working together very well for the blonde, who's beginning to take over the fight. And, most-importantly, despite her success, she remains patient. She doesn't get greedy and try to force anything. She takes what's there, creates what she can, and mostly keeps the slick Frege on the defensive. Elodie, of course, remains patient as well. That's the point of pocket fighting after all, the counter punch, which takes patience. So, Frege takes advantage of the few openings she gets, doesn't force anything, and continues her slick defensive boxing. But, it's not enough. It's Rambin who's taken control of the fight and stretched her lead to 39-37.

ROUND FIVE:

Leven's assault on the pocket continues, and, again, she remains a patient fighter. It's all about creating openings in Frege's excellent defenses, and the blonde continues to do that both with feints and an accurate left hand. It's all going so well, that it's an absolute shock when it goes sideways about a minute in. Frege rolls with a right hand, counters with a short left hook and then BLASTS the blonde with a short right. Rambin wobbles, nearly goes down, and Elodie's off the ropes and to work with both hands. Now, it's Leven in full retreat, her legs unreliable, as Frege batters a stationary target. Before too long, Rambin's on the ropes, but not voluntarily. This is no pocket defense, this is a high, tight guard as the blonde tries to hold on against a determined assault by the French beauty. Frege throws punches in bunches and lands them in bunches as well. Leven's legs hold her up, but, by round's end it's Elodie wide. Rambin's lead has been cut to 48-47, and the control of the fight she fought so hard to establish is long gone.

ROUND SIX:

Elodie does not go to the pocket. She wants to fight at mid-ring now, testing the blonde's legs. And, it's, like almost all the decisions the slick Frenchwoman makes, a very one. Leven's still a bit wobbly from the last round, and that means the accurate-punching Frege can get her offense going in a hurry. She's picking off Rambin with the left hand, setting up hard, accurate rights. Rambin being forced to the defensive again and again, giving ground, but working hard to stay off the ropes. Two minutes in, Frege lands a straight right that staggers the blonde and follows up with a flurry of accurate stuff that sends THE BLONDE GIRL DOWN! Leven crashes to her left side, dazed and hurt. Frege's quickly to a neutral corner watching the count. Rambin rolls to her back, watches the referee count, but the eyes see and don't process. She remains face up on the canvas as the count passes her by. And your winner by KO6 is Elodie Frege!

AFTER:

Frege, as usual, not about big talk. This isn't a girl who boasts about her abilities. She's just a girl who goes out and gives a good effort every time, and has become a threat at bantam via hard work and persistence. "She's very long and hits hard," Elodie says with a nod. "She's not easy to fight. But, I knew if I kept working, kept doing what I do, I'd get her. And I did. I'm very happy tonight. It's an important win for me, and I look forward to my next opportunity in the FCBA."
